General Specification FGS 4L6
Revision E

1. SCOPE
This specification covers seat leak test performed on all single and double-offset high
performance butterfly valves manufactured by Fisher Controls, unless otherwise specified on
Large and/or Special Contract (LSC) documentation. The tests described herein are
acceptance tests and are not necessarily indicative of the leakage that will occur in the field or
that may be expected under different test conditions.
This specification is in accordance with ASME/ANSI B16.34 and MSS SP-61with the
exception of the leakage rates expressed in Tables 2 - 5 and the test pressures specified in Test
Procedure A for the sizes greater than 12 inch.

3. TEST REQUIREMENTS

3.1 General Test Requirements

The following test requirements apply to Test Procedure A, B, and C:
3.1.1 The seat leak test shall be conducted after an acceptable hydrostatic shell test.
3.1.2 Leakage flow and pressure measurements shall be accurate to ± 10% of reading.
3.1.3 The test duration is the period of inspection after the valve is fully prepared and is
under full test pressure. The duration of the seat leak test shall be no less than the following:

Valve Size (NPS) Test Duration (sec)

2 & Smaller 15
2 1/2 – 8 30
10 – 18 60
20 & Larger 120

3.1.4 The test medium shall be applied to the normal or specified valve body inlet per Table
6. The valve body outlet shall be connected to a low head low measuring device.

3.2 Test Procedure A

3.2.1 Test medium shall be clean air or nitrogen gas at 50 - 125°F (10-52°C).
3.2.2 The test pressure shall be 80 – 100 psig.
3.2.3 When the leakage flow has stabilized for the required test duration (see Section 3.1.3),
the quantity shall not exceed 0.1 scfh per unit of NPS (see Table 1 below) or the appropriate
value as specified in the product FGS.

3.3.2 The test pressure shall be not less that 110% of the 100°F rating per ASME/ANSI
B16.34.
3.3.3 When the leakage flow has stabilized for the required test duration (see Section 3.1.3),
the quantity shall not exceed the appropriate value in Tables 2 or 3, unless otherwise
specified in Table 6.

3.4 Test Procedure C

3.4.1 Test medium shall be clean air at 50 - 125°F (10 - 52°C).

3.4.2 The test pressure shall be not less than 110% of the 100°F rating per ASME/ANSI
B16.34.
3.4.3 When the leakage flow has stabilized for the required test duration (see Section 3.1.3),
the quantity shall not exceed the appropriate value in Tables 4 or 5, unless otherwise
specified in Table 6.

Note: (1) In offset-shafted butterfly valves, forward flow refers to the retaining ring side of the valve body as
being the valve inlet, while reverse flow refers to the side of the valve body opposite the retaining
ring as being the valve inlet.
(2) Applies to ion-nitrided seals with chrome or ENC plated discs. For seals without ion-nitriding or
discs with Alloy 6 hardfacing, use Table 4 leak rates.
(3) ANSI/FCI 70-2 Class VI shut-off is attained with Novex seals by using a special construction. Refer
to FGS 4L5, Test Procedure Type C and use FGS 4L5, Table 2 leak rates.
(4) Preferred flow direction is reverse.
