Waste Segregation

Position Paper

Nowadays, waste segregation is still one of the major problems in our country. A
lot of programs have been implemented to diminish the problem on waste, but still this
dilemma won’t able to solve because of the continuous growing of population. There are lots of
solid waste management campaigns done by the different barangay officials including the
Municipal office but until today this problem is still a problem. In order to educate the
community on proper waste management, television, radio, internet and newspaper where
used as a channel of information dissemination but the netizens ignored it. With the different
disasters and calamities happened in our community this becomes the reflection on what
people done in the environment. But still, people are hard headed they are not segregating
their waste and the worst is they just threw their waste anywhere and because of this dilemma
and personalities of the community the act on solid waste management is neglected.

In 2000, the Republic Act 9003 or Ecological Solid Waste Management Act was
enacted to provide a framework for managing the growing problem of solid waste in the
country. Furthermore, the Republic Act 9003 gives prime importance to the roles of Local
Government Units (LGU’s) in managing their respective solid wastes. Moreover, the aim of this
act is to ensure the protection of public health and the environment and to utilize
environmentally-sound methods that maximize the utilization of valuable resources. It includes
the practice reduce, reuse, recycle. It helps to ensure the proper segregation, collection,
transport, storage, treatment and disposal of solid waste through the formulation and adoption
of the best environmental practice in ecological waste management and promote the
environmental awareness action among the citizen.

The reason that why people don’t segregate their waste is the lack of compost pit
and the improper schedule of waste collection. The time of waste collection is one dilemma
why people don’t segregate their waste because at six o’clock to eight o’clock most of the
people where rushing not to be late in their work and their class so they just grab their waste
and threw it to the collection site and there are some that didn't follow any rules or just hard
headed. The trucks that also collects the waste don't collect it everyday and when the garbage
man collects the waste they just mix the biodegradable with the non-biodegradable, so what's
the purpose, the efforts of the people or the street sweepers in segregating the waste were
useless.

Today, waste segregation has become the challenge to the community, many
lives has been affected because of this problem. In order to live in healthy environment we are
obligated to segregates our waste. We should not just rely to the garbage collectors will be the
one to segregate our garbage, instead lets help them for the success of our community. We
need to be responsible for the brighter future.
