RESEARCH PROJECTS

Ph.D. Thesis Title: “ENERGY OPTIMIZATION OF HEPTADS’ STAGE EVAPORATOR VIA MODELING, SIMULATION &
CONTROL”
Supervisors: Dr. Gaurav Manik, Assistant Professor, Department of Polymer and Process Engineering, IIT Roorkee.
Date of Submission: April 6, 2017
Awarded/Defense of Ph.D. Viva-Voce: July 07, 2017
Highlights of Ph.D. Thesis:
• Proposed Energy Reducing Schemes (ERS) based on the liquor flow sequences and various process optimization operations such as
steam-split, feed-split and feed preheating, etc.
• Explore the development of a linear steady-state mathematical model.
• Solve the models with various numerical techniques so as to screen the foremost feed sequence and ERS for optimum SE & SC.
• Explore the development of a set of Simultaneous Nonlinear Algebraic Equations (SNLAE) leading to the formulation of nonlinear steady-
state mathematical models of energy efficient backward-feed flow MSE configuration.
• Propose and implement nature inspired Genetic Algorithm to solve developed SNLAE so as to optimize SE and SC.
• Explore the developments in the area of nonlinear convex optimization problems for backward-feed flow MSE.
• Propose and implement the nonlinear programing Interior-Point Method (I PM) optimization technique to evaluate SE and SC.
• Explore the development of a mathematical model to represents the dynamics of backward feed flow MSE with a set of fourteen nonlinear
first order differential algebraic equations.
• Explore the state-space technique to analyze the developed dynamic model.
• Explore the transfer function, stability and controllability using Eigen values and Kalman’s Test.
• Study the impact of process disturbances namely, flow rate, concentration and temperature of black liquor feed and fresh steam flow rate on
product concentration and vapor temperature of MSE.
• Design PID, Cascade-PID and FLC-PID control strategies to improve the dynamic performance of MSE.
• Compare the process performance parameters such as overshoot, undershoot and integral square error (ISE) that may collectively influence the
product quality.

M. Tech. Thesis Title: “INTELLIGENT TEMPERATURE CONTROLLER FOR WATER-BATH SYSTEM”

Supervisors: Dr. Rajesh Singla, Associate Professor, Department of Control and Instrumentation, NIT Jalandhar.
Highlights of M. Tech. Thesis:
• Conventional controllers usually required a prior knowledge of mathematical modeling of the process. The inaccuracy of mathematical
modeling degrades the performance of the processes, especially for non-linear and complex control problem. The process used in this work is
Water-Bath system, which is most widely used and an example of nonlinear system. For Water-Bath system, it is necessary to attain desired
temperature within a specified period of time to avoid the overshoot and absolute error, with better temperature tracking capability, else the
process is disturbed. To overcome above difficulties intelligent controllers, Fuzzy Logic (FL) and Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Inference System
(ANFIS), are proposed in this work. The Fuzzy controller is designed to work with knowledge in the form of linguistic control rules. But the
translation of these linguistic rules into the framework of fuzzy set theory depends on the choice of certain parameters, for which no formal
method is known. To design ANFIS, Fuzzy-Inference-System is combined with learning capability of Neural-Network. It is analyzed that
ANFIS is best suitable for adaptive temperature control of mentioned system as compared to PID and FLC. ANFIS also produces a stable
control signal. It has much better temperature tracking capability with almost zero overshoot and minimum absolute error.
