Functions and safety standards

The LaserPen conforms to the following international safety standards:

• IEC 60601-1 - Safety of medical electrical devices

• IEC 60601-1-2 - Electromagnetic compatibility
• IEC 60601-1-6 - Usability
• IEC 60601-2-22 - Safety of diagnostic and therapeutic laser devices
• IEC 60825-1 - Safety of laser products

6
Personnel
The operator of this device must comply with the applicable national and international re-
gulations for the operation of a Class 3B laser (e.g. IEC 60601-2-22 and IEC 60825-1, CAN/
CSA Z386-92). Any person who uses the device must be instructed in the handling of the
device and the dangers associated with laser radiation.

The low level laser should be used in therapy as stated for its intended use for medical and
healthcare clinics. The laser may be operated by professionals and trained personnels such as
physiotherapists, acupunctrists, therapists and nurses in healthcare with medical supervision
and independently after they had been trained.

Treatment area
Operate the laser only indoors. The room where laser therapy is performed must meet the
requirements of national accident prevention regulations. All entrances must display a laser
warning sign in compliance with IEC 60825-1. Reflective objects, mirrors, and chrome sur-
faces must be removed. Children may enter the room only as patients and must be under
constant supervision.

Prevent unauthorized use

Your LaserPen is equipped with a safety lock to prevent unauthorized use. The laser can only
be operated with the plug inserted.

When the laser is not in use, the plug should always be removed and stored separate from
the unit in order to prevent unauthorized use.

Emergency shutdown
Press the “ON/OFF” button to turn off the LaserPen and disconnect the plug for the safety
lock on the right side of the device.

Radiation injuries
Avoid direct or scattered radiation to the eyes. Do not look directly into the laser beam
aperture, since visible and invisible laser radiation can cause injury to the eye. Honeywell
3199-21174RJ laser protective eyewear conforming to the European standard EN 207 must
always be worn within the treatment room during treatment. Exercise caution when per-
forming therapy on the head region!

If you are performing treatment for an extended period of time or at high energy output,
adjust the dosage to the particular skin types to avoid a risk of burns. Note that the skin's
pigmentation may change over the course of several treatments.

When treating patients with highly pigmented skin, birthmarks, tattoos, etc., be aware
of the risk of burning because melanin or color in the skin tissue absorbs the light.
Reduce the power or energy output in such cases.

7
Risk of burns
The tip of the LaserPen may become very hot at high power output and an extended treat-
ment time. In this case, avoid direct skin contact by using a cap or applicator. Otherwise,
burns may occur. Alternately, reduce the power output and/or treatment time.

Risk of infection
While performing therapy, keep the LaserPen approx. 1 cm from the skin to avoid direct
contact with damaged skin and prevent bacterial contamination.

After each treatment, disinfect your LaserPen as described in the chapter Care and main-
tenance on page 26. If you use an applicator, also steam sterilize the applicator after each
treatment in order to minimize the risk of patient infection.

Decommissioning in the event of a hazard

If you believe that the device can no longer be operated safely, it should be decom-
missioned to prevent against further use and to send it to the distributor for repair.
Such cases include:
• the power adapter or housing components have visible damage
• the device no longer functions properly
• the device has been stored or transported for a long period under adverse
conditions
• the display fails or is illegible

8
Applications 4

Continuous wave and 6
pulsed lasers

Two laser types

Reimers & Janssen provides the LaserPen Practice as a CW laser and the LaserPen Expert
as a CW laser and a pulsed laser. CW ("continuous wave") lasers can provide a continuous
laser beam, while pulsed lasers emit extremely short pulses of light in succession.

Light emission on both laser types can be controlled by modulation frequencies. A list of the
pre-programmed frequencies can be found in the chapter "Therapy programs" on page 27.

When adjusting frequencies, note that the energy output on a CW laser is always half that
of continuous wave mode regardless of the frequency.

In contrast, the energy output on a pulsed laser (which cannot operate in continuous wave
mode) depends on the selected frequency. Energy emission is highest at the maximum fre-
quency. The power output on the pulsed laser cannot be changed.

12
Startup 7

Checking for transport damage

Inspect your LaserPen for damage that may have occurred during transport, i.e., whether
housing components, the display, charging station, or power adapter have visible damage. If
you discover any damage, do not operate the device. Instead, contact your distributor.

Temporarily disengaging safety lock

On the side of your LaserPen, please check that the safety lock is sealed with a plug. If it is
not, please insert the supplied connecting plug for the door switch fuse into this socket. This
temporarily disengages the safety lock so that you can restore your device's functionality
without a connection to a door switch.

The LaserPen is charged automatically in

Insertion of the safety lock the charging station. The red LED goes out
when the battery is full.

Connecting the power adapter

Insert the power adapter cable into socket on the back side of the charging station and con-
nect the power adapter to the power supply system. The green LED on the charging station
lights up when the cable is connected correctly. You can now plug your LaserPen into the
charging station and it will begin charging automatically. The red LED on the charging station
lights up during the charging process.

If the red LED on the charging station does not light up during the first startup, this
indicates that the battery in your LaserPen is fully charged. The LaserPen is usually
fully charged on delivery and can be used immediately after insertion of the plug for
the safety lock.

13
Working with the LaserPen 8

Functions
The LaserPen is a single laser unit equipped
with a battery, allowing you to create preci-
sion spots while working cable-free.

mum amount of space. Using just four but-
tons on the top of the device, you can set
the treatment time and the energy output,
select from numerous therapy programs,
control the power, switch to diagnostic
mode, or adjust the basic settings. You can select among many functions using
just four buttons.
A two-character status display keeps you in-
formed of the set parameters at all times.

To help you work quickly, your LaserPen re-

members the settings from your last treat-
ment session, even if the device was turned
off in the meantime.

safety reasons.

The LaserPen reactivates automati-

cally once removed from the station.

19
If you have a LaserPen CW 500 mW
model
The tip of the LaserPen CW 500 mW may
overheat if operated at full power for an ex-
tended treatment time.

As a result, this LaserPen must never be

used without an attachment or applicator.
Otherwise, the tip may become too hot and
cause burns on skin contact.

The LaserPen CW 500 mW should not be

operated at full power for more than five
minutes. For longer treatments at full power,
pause treatment for at least one minute af-
ter every five minutes of treatment.

If you have a LaserPen Expert

Impulse model
The maximum recommended modulation
frequency for the LaserPen Expert Impulse
is 10,000 Hz. For therapeutic reasons, we
also provide programs with frequencies up
to 40,000 Hz (see "Therapy programs" on
page 27) to, for example, transmit more en-
ergy in a shorter period. This will, however,
accelerate aging of the laser diode.

The laser diode should therefore be

checked more frequently than usual, at the
very least during the annual safety check
(see the chapter "Care and maintenance" on
page 26).

Note that harsh or caustic agents (e.g., acetone) must not be used for regular cleaning of
the plastic components. Prevent moisture from entering the housing. It is best to use a damp
cloth for cleaning.

To disinfect the device, wipe with a standard disinfectant.

Always use a damp cloth for cleaning and disinfection. Never flush water over the de-
vice. Do not use solvents!

Calibration and safety check

Your LaserPen does not contain any user-serviceable internal parts or components. There is
thus no reason to open the device's housing.
