Introduction 2
Your LaserPen
Thank you for choosing the LaserPen – a high-quality laser device from Reimers & Janssen
GmbH.
Reimers & Janssen has been designing and manufacturing medical devices for laser therapy
since 1982. Our experience and innovations have made us one of Europe's leading manufac-
turers in the industry. We have applied our profound knowledge of complementary therapy
methods to this product as well, which lets you achieve the best results for your patients
with gentle laser therapy across a large range of applications.
With the LaserPen, we have developed a mobile hand-held device that is optimally suited for
spot applications. It provides maximum functionality in a minimum amount of space: adjust-
able treatment duration, an extensive choice of programs, power regulation, and a diagnostic
function.
Its cable-free, compact design makes the LaserPen the ideal acupuncture laser for a wide
range of applications. And by using the optional attachments, the unit is even suitable for au-
ral and dental applications.
Its integrated high-performance batteries mean the LaserPen is ready for operation, imme-
diately and anywhere. Thanks to its ergonomic design and low weight, absolutely effortless
spot laser therapy is available to you right at your fingertips. The LaserPen is easily operated
by using the buttons on the top of the unit, and its back-lit display always shows the param-
eters that have been set.
With LaserPen, we have created a compact spot laser that lets you utilize the versatile capa-
bilities of gentle laser therapy to achieve the best possible results for your patients.

Safety information 3
General information
Read these operating instructions thoroughly before operating the device.
These operating instructions describe the proper use of the LaserPen and indicate hazards
associated with its use. All individuals who use, care for, service, or inspect this device must
read and follow the instructions.
These operating instructions must always be kept with the device and must be included with
the LaserPen if given to others.
Liability disclaimer
You may use the LaserPen only for the purposes described in these operating instructions
and only under supervision. The manufacturer is not liable for the device and the conse-
quences resulting from operation or applications that are not described within these oper-
ating instructions. The manufacturer reserves the right to make changes based on techno-
logical improvements.
The LaserPen may only be operated with the power supply indicated in the technical data
and only with accessories approved by Reimers & Janssen GmbH. Never open the device.
Repair and maintenance work may only be performed by Reimers & Janssen GmbH or an
authorized RJ service station.
6
Personnel
The operator of this device must comply with the applicable national and international re-
gulations for the operation of a Class 3B laser (e.g. IEC 60601-2-22 and IEC 60825-1, CAN/
CSA Z386-92). Any person who uses the device must be instructed in the handling of the
device and the dangers associated with laser radiation.
The low level laser should be used in therapy as stated for its intended use for medical and
healthcare clinics. The laser may be operated by professionals and trained personnels such as
physiotherapists, acupunctrists, therapists and nurses in healthcare with medical supervision
and independently after they had been trained.
Treatment area
Operate the laser only indoors. The room where laser therapy is performed must meet the
requirements of national accident prevention regulations. All entrances must display a laser
warning sign in compliance with IEC 60825-1. Reflective objects, mirrors, and chrome sur-
faces must be removed. Children may enter the room only as patients and must be under
constant supervision.
When the laser is not in use, the plug should always be removed and stored separate from
the unit in order to prevent unauthorized use.
Emergency shutdown
Press the “ON/OFF” button to turn off the LaserPen and disconnect the plug for the safety
lock on the right side of the device.
Radiation injuries
Avoid direct or scattered radiation to the eyes. Do not look directly into the laser beam
aperture, since visible and invisible laser radiation can cause injury to the eye. Honeywell
3199-21174RJ laser protective eyewear conforming to the European standard EN 207 must
always be worn within the treatment room during treatment. Exercise caution when per-
forming therapy on the head region!
If you are performing treatment for an extended period of time or at high energy output,
adjust the dosage to the particular skin types to avoid a risk of burns. Note that the skin's
pigmentation may change over the course of several treatments.
When treating patients with highly pigmented skin, birthmarks, tattoos, etc., be aware
of the risk of burning because melanin or color in the skin tissue absorbs the light.
Reduce the power or energy output in such cases.
7
Risk of burns
The tip of the LaserPen may become very hot at high power output and an extended treat-
ment time. In this case, avoid direct skin contact by using a cap or applicator. Otherwise,
burns may occur. Alternately, reduce the power output and/or treatment time.
Risk of infection
While performing therapy, keep the LaserPen approx. 1 cm from the skin to avoid direct
contact with damaged skin and prevent bacterial contamination.
After each treatment, disinfect your LaserPen as described in the chapter Care and main-
tenance on page 26. If you use an applicator, also steam sterilize the applicator after each
treatment in order to minimize the risk of patient infection.
8
Applications 4
Treatment range
The Reimers & Janssen LaserPen is suitable for a wide range of treatments in dermatol-
ogy, rheumatology, orthopedics, physiotherapy, sports and veterinary medicine as well as
dentistry.
Your LaserPen may be used for irradiation of the skin and for acupuncture treatments.
Contraindications / Limitations
We advise against the direct irradiation of the following organs and areas:
• Eyes
• Epiphyseal region in children
• Open fontanel
• Fetuses or in the area above the uterus of pregnant women
• Dark, pigmented or colored skin, regions with dark hair
• No irradiation of the head area in patients with (a tendency to) epilepsy
• Tumor/cancer patients

Continuous wave and 6
pulsed lasers
Light emission on both laser types can be controlled by modulation frequencies. A list of the
pre-programmed frequencies can be found in the chapter "Therapy programs" on page 27.
When adjusting frequencies, note that the energy output on a CW laser is always half that
of continuous wave mode regardless of the frequency.
In contrast, the energy output on a pulsed laser (which cannot operate in continuous wave
mode) depends on the selected frequency. Energy emission is highest at the maximum fre-
quency. The power output on the pulsed laser cannot be changed.
12
Startup 7
If the red LED on the charging station does not light up during the first startup, this
indicates that the battery in your LaserPen is fully charged. The LaserPen is usually
fully charged on delivery and can be used immediately after insertion of the plug for
the safety lock.
