Thermal Oil Heater

Firing up Boiler

-Make sure bypass valve on deck full open

-Turn on power to thermal boiler panel
-Reset trips
-Open burner fuel valve and check spill return to correct day tank
-Set one thermal oil pump on ‘MANUAL’. The pressure will stabilize
between 2.0-2.5)
-Set other thermal oil pump to ‘STANDBY’
-Burner switch to ‘Cargo Heating’ or ‘Tank Wash’ as required
-Burner switch on ‘NORMAL’
-Burner switch ‘ON’ and reset trips if any
-Check burner firing by sight glass on burner. Use extension mirror.
-Bring thermal oil temperature up slowly by adjusting the set point
10-20C for 5-10 minutes each till desired temperature is reached
for operation you want.
(ie.150C for cargo heating on 2 tanks/130-160C for tank wash
gives 80-85C for one fixed machine & gives 75-80C for portable
machine)
-Circulate oil 30 minutes through system before use to make sure the
system is pre warmed.

Shutting Down Boiler

-Make sure Bypass valve on deck full open

-Switch burner to ‘OFF’
-Close fuel valve on burner
-Bring set point down to about 25C on thermal oil boiler panel
-Allow thermal oil to circulate till cooled down to about 75-80C
-Shut down pumps
-Switch off panel
Cargo Heating
Cargo Heating

-Check bypass valve is open on main deck

-Fire up boiler according to instructions on ‘Cargo Heating’ mode and
bring up to 150C for two tanks
-Open cargo heaters inlet & outlet valves for thermal oil on selected
cargo tank heaters on deck
-Make sure deck crew have opened cargo circulation valves on same
heaters
-Switch on temperature controls in cargo office
-Put cargo pumps on “Circulate” and set to 3

Automatic Operation: Open main air valve in E.R. Make sure

problems do not occur with air control to generators. If it does then
manual operation of heating may be required. Put air on to actuators for
heating control valves selected on deck. Put temperature desired on
control panel for selected tanks in cargo office. Leave bypass valve on
circulation main open.

Manual Operation: Open air operated valve on deck via hand wheel
till desired temperature through heater is reached. Do in
increments to let system have time to settle out. Check heater
temperatures on the panel in cargo office. In manual mode you can
close in on bypass till open 1 turn. ‘DO NOT SHUT OFF
COMPLETELY’

Shutting Down Cargo Heating

-Make sure Bypass valve on deck full open

-Close heating oil valves to tank heaters on deck. This is important or
could damage heaters when cargo circulation is stopped.
-Circulate cargo for 10-15 minutes to cool down heaters and then stop
cargo circulation
-Shut down the thermal oil boiler according to instructions
Hot Tank Washing
Starting Up Tank Hot Washing

-Check bypass valve is open on main deck

-Start up boiler according to instructions on ‘Tank Wash’ mode bringing
boiler up to about 125-160C for hot wash of black oil
-Tank wash pump to be put on and going through bleeder overboard
-Open warm through valve on heater and let warm through 30 minutes
-Slowly open the thermal oil outlet then inlet valves to the heater
-Then do either of the following methods for control:

Automatic Operation: Open air valve on pneumatic temperature control unit. Set
the controller to the desired temperature by moving the red set needle (never set
above 105C). The black needle gives wash water temperature and should rise to
80-85C. This will take up to 1/2 hour. Make sure the pneumatic valve is
modulating correctly. Boiler setting 125-135C for tank wash gives 80-85C for one
fixed machine & 140-160 gives 75-80C for portable machine. If not then switch to
manual control or oil flow problems will occur tripping the boiler burners out.

OR

Manual Operation: Open air valve on pneumatic temperature control unit. Set
the controller red set needle to maximum 100-105C to keep the pneumatic valve in
the open position and protect the tank wash heater from being overheated should
the temperature rise too high it will still trip out the boiler. Boiler setting 125-135C
for tank wash gives 80-85C for one fixed machine & 140-160 gives 75-80C for
portable machine. The black needle gives wash water temperature and should rise
to 80-95C. This will take up to 1 hour. All Deck personnel are to be aware that any
change in the number of machines open/closed will change the boiler and water
heater settings. E/R personnel are to be informed before any changes in the flow
are done so the system can be monitored.

-Close in on bypass on deck till open 1 turn.

‘DO NOT SHUT OFF COMPLETELY’

-Open tank wash machine to wash.

-Then close bleeder. When changing over only open bleeder one turn to keep flow
and temperatures steady.
-Keep eye on boiler and heater temperature till system settles down.
-Wash tanks.

NOTE : A flow of water must be maintained at all times through the tank
wash heater or it will be damaged. Always have at least one machine and/or
the bleeder open one turn.
Shutting Down Hot Tank Washing

-Make sure to flush all lines and tank wash machines through with fresh
water from the tank wash tank if have been using sea water before
shutting down.
-Open thermal oil bypass valve on deck full before shutting
down heater
-Bring set point down to about 25C on thermal oil boiler control panel
-Switch burner to ‘OFF’
-Close fuel valve on burner
-Keep water running through the heater to cool down the heater.
-Put heating controller red set point needle to zero and wait for black
temperature indication needle to come down to <40C
-Bleed off and shut the air to the controller (3 way valve)
-Open the warm through valve on the heater and shut the outlet and inlet
thermal oil valves to the heater
-After cooling down 10-15 minutes shut off the warming through valve
-Finish shutting down the thermal oil boiler according to the instructions
-Allow thermal oil to circulate till cooled down to about 100C
-Shut down pumps
-Switch off panel
