1.0 Introduction

Background of Study

Based on the study done by Radin et al. air pollution is one of the most serious problems in
the world. It occurs when the air contains gases, dust, fumes or odor in harmful amounts,
which could be harmful to the health or comfort of humans and animals. For the past 50
years, air pollution was a widely recognized problem that comes with long and short term
impact on human health and the environment [1]. With high rate of urbanization,
industrialization and increase in motorized transport from the rapid population growth has
resulted in increased concentration of various air pollutants sulphur dioxide (SO2), nitrogen
oxide (NOx), carbon monoxide (CO), lead (Pb), ozone (O3) [2].

Faisal et al. stated that Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions are of increasing concern
due to their impact on the global warming. The seven main GHG are: Carbon Dioxide (CO2),
Methane (CH4), Nitrous Oxide (N2O), Hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), Perfluorocarbons
(PFCs), Sulfur Hexafluoride (SF6) and Carbon Monoxide (CO). Due to the increasing
number of vehicle users among students and staffs annually, fuel efficiency and exhaust
emissions are two main concerns that must be addressed. Ali et al. stated that rubber industry
consumes large volumes of water, uses chemicals and other utilities and produces enormous
amounts of wastes and effluent. Discharge of untreated rubber effluent to waterways resulted
in water pollution that affected the human health.

2.0 Problem Statements

a)The industries around UTHM contribute towards pollution.

b)The industries around UTHM produce a lotof waste.

3.0 Objectives

a)To identify the industries that contribute pollution and waste.

b)To determine the impact of pollution towards surrounding people.

c)To ensure a proper way to reduce the pollution and waste materials.

4.0 Significance of Study

The findings of this study will give benefits to the surrounding people of UTHM considering
that the industries around UTHM contribute towards pollution and also waste issue. The
pollution and waste can cause health issue to surrounding people, thus, by conducting this
study, we might come up with a proper solution to decrease the impact of pollution and waste
produced by the industries.

5.0 Limitation of Study

a)Time constraint

The time provided to finish the research project is only for 6 weeks to complete all the work
within the time frame. We need to find 150 respondents for our questionnaire that we have to
distribute to collect raw data from the students of Faculty of Civil and Environmental
Engineering. Then we need to analyze the data.

b)Sample size

We were only allowed to collect the data from the students from Faculty of Civil and
Environmental Engineering only which doesn’t involve students from other faculties that are
available in UTHM. We can only know the opinion or answers given from the students from
that one faculty only.

c)The research carried out only cover for UTHM students only and also difficulties in finding
the articles related to the research topic.
6.0 Methodology
There are two methods that were used in our research project which are :
a)Questionnaire
We use questionnaire to collect raw data from the students of Faculty of Civil and
Environmental Engineering only excluding other faculties in UTHM with a minimum
number of 150 of respondents to answer all 15 questions that we have created.
There are 15 questions in total that we created on our own which we think that will achieve
our objectives in finishing the research project. We used closed-end items and also open-
ended items in our questionnaire. The questionnaire that we have made is on the appendix
section in this proposal.

b)Reflective Journal
We have to find and collect a minimum of 3 journals to help us in finishing this research
project as a references. We need to read all of those 3 journals and analyze the points that are
related with our research topic.

7.0 Definition of Terms

a)students – the students of Faculty of Civil and Environmental Engineering, UTHM

b)pollution – refers to air pollution, water pollution that give impact to people surrounding
c)industries – the industries that available around UTHM
