Alcogolism in the Philippines

• Typical Pinoys gathered together in a circle or table with beer or any alcoholic mixture as the centerpiece of

*happening* along with karaoke music and singing; where food is serve generously.

• Only one solitary glass is passed around by *Taga-tagay* (Toastmaster)

• His job is to distribute the drinks while others are waiting to receive their *tagay* (toast)

• Common word that we usually heard is *Tagay na*.

Philippines Situation

• Unfortunately, there is little data on the extent of alcoholism or alcohol abuse.

• There is no official statistic available yet.

• The consequences of alcoholism are very obvious in the community or inside our homes.

• We can see the alarming number of news which is related to alcoholism.

• Alcoholism is not consider as a medical problem by most of Filipino that.

• Most Filipino with alcohol problem do not submit themselves to medical treatment even if their condition is

chronic.

• Alcoholism is a disease that is hard to diagnose.

• Alcoholic usually deny they have a problem.

Situation

• In the Philippines, alcohol rehabilitation centers have low admission rate compared to similar institutions.

• PGH, as a premier government hospital, offers treatment and counseling for its indigent alcoholic patients.

• Patients from rich families go to private rehabilitation

• There are some NGOs which provide similar services and carry our advocacy work.

• However, still, a lot of effort and works are needed to address the problem of alcohol abuse.

• 134 country worldwide on the impact of the excessive and hazardous us of alcohol.

• 2.5 million of people die annually due to the harmful alcohol use.

• In Southeast Asia, Filipino were found to be the second highest consumers of alcohol, second only to the

Indonesians.

• In the study, the beer appears to be the favorite drink of Filipinos due to its affordability compared to hard drinks.
• Filipinos are #1 when it comes to drinking wine of the Asian region.

• Alcohol consumption is estimated at 5 million drinkers In a populations of more than 90 million

• 4 percent of all death world wide is cause of alcohol addiction more death than those cause by HIV – AIDS,

tuberculosis.

• Globally, about 320,000 young people aged 15-29 yrs old die annually due to alcoholic related causes.

Alcoholism is a Disease

• Alcoholism is a disease that produces both physical and psychological addiction.

• Alcohol is a central nervous system depressant that reduces anxiety, inhibition, and feelings of guilt. It lowers
alertness and impairs perception, judgment, and motor coordination.

• In high doses, it can cause loss of consciousness and even death. Alcoholism is a disease that damages the brain,

liver, heart, and other organs

Signs and Symptoms

• Spotting the signs and symptoms of alcoholism is not always easy

• Many signs occur earlier, yet are harder to detect

• - An increasing tolerance to the effects of alcohol

• - A growing preoccupation with or interest in drinking

• -A person will dispute their drinking is a problem

• Later, difficulties in relationships, on the job, or with the law often occur.

• - Hiding alcohol or sneaking drinks

• - Gulping the first few drinks

• - Wanting to drink more, or longer, than the rest of the crowd

• - Losing control of drinking, leading to attempts to control it

Recommendation to reduce alcoholic addiction


• Raising alcoholic taxes

• Restricting sales to reduce availability

• Raising the age limit for purchasing alcohol

• Enforcing effective anti-drunk driving laws
