Job Title: Applications Engineer


Reports to: Senior Applications Engineer Team Leader
Department: Applications

Principal Purpose
A hands-on role to support the success of Electron Microscopy and related portfolio products in all market
sectors, academia and industry and with a key focus on geoscience.
This includes system/software demonstrations and sample analysis, customer training, & product testing.
This is part of the global Demonstration & Applications team supporting Global Application activities.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
• Work in conjunction with the sales personnel using the ZSP to understand customer requirements
and demonstrate the full capabilities of the tools as applies to the customers’ needs
• Preparation and execution of customer demonstrations and sample runs
• Document daily application activities in shared Customer Center database
• Prepare reports for customers on the full results of demonstration or sample work, either from
images or the information obtained from other detection technologies
• Develop and document methodologies for applications according to what is needed and of value to
current customer research needs
• Travel to customer sites to provide training and applications support
• Support of Sector Marketing where required
• Evaluation of new software releases, service packs and application specific software and provide a
structured feedback
• Testing and QA sign off, of new systems & accessories, and provide a structured feedback.

• Write and present technical papers
• Generate new marketing images for the global applications teams’ “Image Gallery”
• Travel to trade shows and conferences to support the marketing and sales teams
• Ability to travel up to 70%

Experience and Education Requirements:


• Background in Geoscience is required, Materials Science would also be desirable
• Experience with scanning electron microscopy (conventional, field emission and focused ion beam
microscopy technologies)
• Knowledge or experience in using Process Specific Tools (PST) is preferred (i.e., particle analysis
programs & workflows that solve a customers’ particular Job-to-be-done)
• Knowledge of and experience in sample preparation techniques for materials, semiconductor and life
science electron microscopy
• Experience with analysis hardware and techniques such as EDS, EBSD, WDS
• M.Sc. in Geoscience or Material Science plus at least 2 years relevant experience in industry or
academia in a science discipline using electron microscopy techniques (Ph.D. is preferred)

Practical Requirements
This position involves UK and international travel with overnight stays and occasional work/travel at
weekends.

Performance Measures
Annual appraisals to be undertaken by the Senior Applications Engineer Team Leader and agreed objectives
set for the forthcoming year.
