4113 – Analyze Lesson Environment
Field Observation #3
1. Activity of the teacher (What is the teacher doing?)
a. Ms. Kane is walking around the class asking students if they’re working on their
packets for their test. They are currently studying theater history, specifically the
origins from the Greeks. She makes her rounds asking is they need help or what task
they are expected to accomplish. Explains that they can access their notes on Google
Classroom.
2. Activity of the learners (What are the students doing?)
a. The students are divided up into group stations that covers a different section of their
theater history packet. There are 6 stations total. Every 8 minutes they switch to the
next station to copy down the information provided. Many of the students are keen on
completing their packet but some are more interested in speaking to their friends.
3. Resources (What resources are utilized/necessary in order to make the lesson successful?)
a. They have notes packet with six pages long each page has pictures on it that
correspond with information. For example one station is about the Greek Gods and
how they relate to a term called “deus ex machina” and the Oracle of Delphi. Students
are also all supplied chrome books, but most of the students are choosing not to use
them. Though most of the students with exceptionalities are using them.
4. Noise level (What is the noise level in the room? High, medium, low? Does the noise level
fluctuate? If so, when? If not, why do you think this is so?)
a. Noise level was consistently at a medium level that is fairly manageable and tolerable
which I found surprising considering how many students are actually in here (about
25). The only time the noise level fluctuated greatly was at the end of the class period
when the students were putting away their materials waiting for the bell.
5. Use of space (Which area(s) of the classroom are used? Is this effective?)
a. The set up is great for the first level theater classes because it mainly consists of
instruction rather than performance based. Ms. Kane has the tables set up in the
middle of the classroom and seats on risers that sit at the back of the class. The
advanced theater classes were putting together makeup morgues so the tables were
used to their advantage.
6. Concentration level (What do you perceive is the student concentration level? High?
Medium? Low? Does it fluctuate? If so, why? If not, should it?)
a. At the beginning of the class when they were first assigned the packets a solid 90% of
the class was hard at work. Though as they began switching, the students became
easily distracted. Many students were more focused on their phones rather than their
packets.
7. Movement of learners (Are learners sitting for a long time, moving around, fluctuating?)
a. For this class they stick with their group members for the day and they all move to a
different station when instructed.
8. Movement of teacher (Is the teacher standing in one spot, moving around, does the teacher
know where the “management issues” are?)
a. Ms. Kane is actively walking around to each group asking them questions about their
learning and answering any questions that arise. She was on her feet the entire class
period, stopping only a few times to speak to me.
9. Number of learners actively involved (Involved is the key word…not just sitting passively…
involved in the lesson…)
a. For a consistent number I would say approximately 1/3 of the students stayed
completely involved within the lesson. Unfortunately, towards the end of the lesson
most of the students lost interest completely.
10. Lines of communication (teacher/student; student/teacher; student/student). When did these
occur?
a. Ms. Kane was diligent about answering any questions the students had and attempting
to steer them back onto their classwork. Since the instruction allowed teamwork with
the group members, most of the students talked to each other throughout the class
period.
11. Write a concluding paragraph indicating your feelings as to the success of the lesson. Would
you have done anything differently? What worked? What did not work? Do you feel this
lesson was a success? Why or why not?
a. The assignment in question was specifically a tool that the students could use for an
upcoming test. But because this class period was specifically just for review and
they’re allowed to have the phones it’s a little difficult for them to actually have
motivation to concentrate. Many of the students didn’t take advantage of the fact that
it was an open note test. Personally, I think it was a great way for the students to take
charge of their own learning, especially with the amount of information that
presented. The lesson had wonderful intentions and planning, but the execution itself
was lacking. If I had to do it differently, I would ask them to put their phones away
the until the last 10 minutes of class, so they have to work on their Cheat sheet.
