Internship Goal

Goal 1: To increase my knowledge and skill in pre-procedural preparation and teaching in the surgical,
emergency, and inpatient units.
Objectives:
- I will observe atleast 2 and make atleast 3-6 pre-op assessment phone calls
to obtain information about patients and families prior to surgery. I will document
information about pre-op phone calls on the P.I.T. Pediatric pre-surgical care
planning questionnaire form and keep a spreadsheet for my reference
- I will observe the preparation style of two different child life specialists in the
emergency department and/or the surgical unit. I will write about preparations
that I observe in my journal.
- I will prepare for patients for procedures in both the surgical and emergency
departments. I will write a one page reflection on how the preparation went and
my thoughts and observations about the preparation for 2-3 interactions.
- I will create a pre-op preparation book for a common surgery that can be used
with patients.

Goal 2: To expand my knowledge of medical terminology, procedures, and the psychosocial and
developmental implications that accompany specific diagnoses and/or procedures/ treatments, and
policies.
Objectives:
- I will develop a medical terminology notebook that I will use to keep track of
different medical terminology, acronyms, procedures, and medications.
-I will support patients during procedures by providing support and coping
techniques for a variety of procedures. I will document this by charting on
interactions with patients were procedural support was done. I will write atleast
3 chart notes documenting procedural support.
- I will expand my knowledge to the behavioral health population by researching
pediatric behavioral health, finding 2-3 relevant articles, and writing a one page
summary.
- I will shadow the Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner on the Pediatric Intervention
Team to learn more about her role and how needs are met outside of child life.

Goal 3: To expand my knowledge about and become involved in the program development and staff
education piece of child life programming.
Objectives:
- I will research and create patient information boards to allow patients and
families to present information that is important to them to staff members.
- I will help to develop and present an in-service to staff about working with
patients who have Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).
- I will create an information sheet of helpful tips for staff members working with
patients with ASD.
