Load Calculation
All the possible loads are applied on the structure as listed and calculated below:
1) Self-weight of the structure (DL)
2) Superimposed load of 200 mm thick gravel layer on top of the RWT top slab for precast slabs and 100 mm thick gravel where the
cantilever slabs are provided. Gravel density considered as 20 kN/sqm.
3) Live load on the top slab for maintenance= 2.5 kN/sq.m and a point load of 5kN (communicated over skype call).
4) Hydrostatic loads acting on the walls of RWT from inside. These loads are applied for tank partially full and tank full condition.
5) Accidental water load case- Tank full/overflow condition. These loads are applied for tank partially full and tank full condition.
6) Lateral earth pressure acting on the face of the walls. The soil resiting against RWT has a sloping profile across the tank width.
Refer to the GA drawings for clarity. There is a compaction load which envelopes the lateral earth pressure due to soil. Lateral
pressure corresponding to soil enveloped with compaction load has been considered. A compaction load of 12.5 kN/sq.m. is
considered.
7) Live load surcharge on the walls, acting from outside the tank. LL = 10 kN/sq.m.
8) Loads due to piping and other mechanical equipment.
Load Combinations: individual loads are applied with appropriate multiplying coefficients)
1) SLS- Internal (DL + Roof live load + internal hydrostatic pressure with left chamber filled with water)
2) SLS- Internal (DL + Roof live load + internal hydrostatic pressure with right chamber filled with water)
3) SLS- Internal (DL + Roof live load + internal hydrostatic pressure with only inlet chambers filled with water)
4) SLS- Internal (DL + Roof live load + internal hydrostatic pressure with both chambers filled with water)
5) SLS- External (DL + Roof Live load + soil and compaction load+ soil surcharge)
6) SLS- Internal and external (DL + Roof live load + internal hydrostatic pressure for all the chambers + soil and compaction load+ soil
surcharge)
7) ULS- Internal (DL + Roof live load + internal hydrostatic pressure with left chamber filled with water)
8) ULS- Internal (DL + Roof live load + internal hydrostatic pressure with right chamber filled with water)
9) ULS- Internal (DL + Roof live load + internal hydrostatic pressure with only inlet chambers filled with water)
10) ULS- Internal (DL + Roof live load + internal hydrostatic pressure with both chambers filled with water)
11) ULS- External (DL + Roof Live load + soil and compaction load+ soil surcharge)
12) ULS- Internal and external (DL + Roof live load + internal hydrostatic pressure for all the chambers + soil and compaction load+ soil
surcharge)

Alex,
Shalini, Trust this is all you need from a geotechnical perspective, but please let me know if you need anything further.
Regards
Graham
Graham,
Response as follows:
1. We have done a quick sliding check that shows with the tank empty and the slope behind the tank reinstated to
full height (with a 1:6 slope above), but no backfill against the downhill side, the factor of safety is around 4.0.
This shows that there are no special measures required to resist sliding. This assumes the tank base is cast
against the natural soils, not a membrane.
2. Modulus of sub-grade reaction would be in the order of 15000 kN/m3. All other data required provided already
in GDR.
3. Agree that the work done on construction plant loading for Ardersier should be used again here – no need to
reinvent the wheel each time.
Regards,
Alex
1
Shalini,
Thank you for a detailed and considered response. This is very helpful. So to summarise:
You will progress the structural design of the Ness RWT and try to keep the overall Engineering hours below 100 but
expect this may need to increase by 10 or 20 hours. In order to achieve this you would like geotech to confirm the
following:
1. What level the downhill FGL needs to be at to prevent sliding
2. Soil parameters such as active / passive coefficients, density, modulus (Note: these are mostly provided in table
5.3 of the GDR)
3. The compaction pressure that will be received by the walls during backfilling. We should use the same plant as
was agreed at Ardersier. I would also suggest that we can specify that backfilling is only done when the tanks are
full, thereby counteracting a temporary high load which could drive the design
From a constructability perspective I have confirmed with the Contractor that he is happy to have the primary steel on
the outside of the walls, however I do not expect there to be an appetite for tapered walls so please progress with
vertical faces.
We are slightly revising the tank GA and can re-issue this to you tomorrow. Please let me know whether this would be
sufficient to allow you to start and if so when you would need the additional geotechnical information.
Callum,
As discussed we will need an estimate from you to do the sliding check and for liaison with India (via myself please) on
the above parameters and issues. We would not expect there to be a need for much time to be spent doing items 2 & 3
as it would appear these have already been provided in the GDR and for Ardesier respectively.
Regards
Graham
Hi Graham,
Earlier an estimation of 55 (40 preparation and 15 for QC) hours were given assuming that there will be no substantial
change in the structure.
The design hours have increased to (116 hours) due to the following changes:
1) The basic philosophy of the wall support (end condition) has changed. We will have to check the possibility of
providing a tapering section of the walls. There will be a very narrow scope to optimize the section.
In this case, the vertical reinforcement will need to be provided as Layer 1 (this was adopted even during
estimation).
2) The sliding change has to be performed again (without any projected toe) and the revision in the sizes has to be
incorporated. It will be an iterative process.
However, the design can still be managed in 75 hours (60+15) of time if we get the size/thicknesses based on the
geotechnical stability from the Geotech team.
For the drawings, we compared the details with Ardersier, Aeration Lanes and the details required for the same. We
may need more details for this structure too as against earlier estimation, resulting in more number of drawings. We
estimate 3+ numbers of drawings. Hence the hours were higher. This may reduce if the sheets are lesser. We will try to
fit within 100 hours of time, however, there may be a slippage of 10-20 hours extra.
Regards,
Shalini
Hi Shalini,
This is significantly more than we have allowed in our design allowance. We had allowed 100, 40 and 15 hours
respectively for CAD, design and Co-ordination. We understood that the structural design was done previously and
though this would just be for detailing. I appreciate that the change to use precast roof slabs will involve additional
design time. I wonder if you could identify the following for me please:
1. The extra hours anticipated due to the change in the structure type
2. Any steps we can take to try and reduce the number of hours to closer to those in our estimate
We also have allowed the following hours for the building extension and associated suspended floor and superstructure.
I wonder if we have perhaps some spare hours in this element of the design that could be used to counteract the
predicted deficit in the raw water tank. I attach a couple of drawings of this area of the project for you to base an
assessment on, it is basically an extension to an existing portal framed structure with a concrete sump as a floor slab and
a raised steelwork (open mesh) floor. We have not issued this to you yet as we need to do more design on the
equipment within the building before we can advise on finished levels, loadings etc.
CAD – 130hrs
Design - 180hrs
Co-ordination – 41hrs
Hopefully we can come to an agreement on how best to progress this design within the available budget.
Regards
Graham
Hi Graham,
Thanks for the call.
We have estimated engineering hours as 116 hours. This includes design preparation, checking of design and checking of
drawings.
For Coordination 16 hours have been allocated.
Drawings of the structure would need around 180 hours.
This is in the view of change in the basic philosophy of the tank walls. Now they will be cantilever walls.
We suggest that the sliding/stability checks be done by the geo-tech team with appropriate values of soil parameters.
The amount of backfill then needed to give away with the toe projection can then be assumed in our designs.
The earlier design files were done assuming vertical reinforcement outside and the horizontal inside. This gives us the
more economic sections. If this is still valid for detailed design stage, please confirm on that. To facilitate this we can
suggest prefabricated cages for the contactor to go smoothly with execution.
As we discussed we will prepare a formal report after we get a go ahead from you on this.
I am enclosing few of the design parameters which will be needed to start design report.
It will be helpful if you can share with us the Geotech report and design criteria.
Regards,
Shalini
Andy / Shalini,
Please replace Friday’s drawings with the attached. Nothing technically has changed, just the wrong drawing numbers
on each drawing.
Regards
Graham
Hi Shalini,
As discussed earlier please find attached the draft General Arrangement for the Raw Water Tanks at Ness. These are
very similar to what was designed at Outline Design. The main changes are:
• We have shown a (mostly) precast concrete roof
• To accommodate the tank covers we have shown cantilever sections at the ends of the tank

Nair, Shalini
Hi Harshada,
I had a discussion with Graham on 14-9-2018. Apologies for updating you late about it.
Discussions are as follows:
1) Their purchase order is with Scottish water and we are supposed to provide solutions so that construction is
faster and to make efficiencies in the design wrt sizes (walls, base slab etc).
2) Followings changes are required to be done.
*Floating decant arm as per the client’s requirement (details will be captured in the revised drawings).
*The tank dimension has increased by 500 mm new dimension is 20.5 meters.
*Precast concrete roof slabs are required. There will be a 200 mm wide bearing strip provided to support the
top sab, hence no beams are required. There are openings in the top
slabs and to support them, cantilever slabs are proposed.
*Pull out bars are to be provided for the inlet chamber.
* precast blocks to be put for screeding to create slopes in the inlet chambers.
3) Live loads on the top slabs to be 2.5 kN/sqm and a point load of 5 kN.
4) The required data like geotechnical data, design criteria and GA drawings will be available by September end
(most probably).
5) Reinforcement densities are required by end of Nov or beginning of December 2018. This density has to be
agreed upon. Only then the drawings should start.
After the information is received from them, I will discuss with him about the information shared in case more clarity is
needed.
Regards,
Shalini
Harshada,
1
I am just pulling together the information required to allow you to complete the structural design of the raw water tank
at Ness WTW. We are looking to make efficiencies where we can and are currently thinking along the following lines:
• Use of precast slabs for the majority of the roof structure
• Removal of the toe from the base of the tank (I seem to recall this was for sliding which could be counteracted
by a higher bund on the downhill side)
• Use of pull out bars for the inlet chamber
• Use of precast blocks for the 45 degree benching in the settlement zone
• Rationalising the covers on the inlet chambers
• Use of thinner sections for base and walls
In addition to the above efficiencies the Client is asking for a floating decant arm for the draw-off from the new tanks.
This is unlikely to have a major impact on the structure. I hope to pull together some sketches later today which I will
send out to SW for approval. I will copy these in to you at the same time for your comments. In the meantime please let
me know if you have anything to add to or any comments on the suggestions above.

Snapshot showing the plate mat supports of the structure under Inlet chamber base slab. The subgrade
modulus for the inlet chamber has be reduced to 1/4th of that applied for Raw water tank. This is a very
conservative assumption.
For assumption of spring for inlet area assume SBC as 5T/m2 with 25mm
settlement. This is the minimum available in fill soils also.

The highlighted load is the live load surcharge load applied on the walls. The soil
profile is sloping across the transverse section of the tank. This load is applied in
a sloping profile (as done for the soil and compaction load). Just under and
about 2 meters around the intake chamber a different load value is applied.

with maximum tensile at the top of the central wall, corresponding moments are very only in the order of 0.2 mPa
(146 kN of maximum shear capacity). Hence the section is safe.
With maximum shear in the external long walls (0.42 x 500= 210) and corresponding tension of 0.8 x 500 = 400 kN
(only half of it is applied for ULS check) has a shear capacity of 217.22 kN. Hence Safe.
