TEMS Discovery Training

Module 1 Script

Description:

A training module script is used as a teacher guide. The trainer should spend very little
time with the slide packs and demonstrate and guide the students through the tool.

The slide pack for each module may feel very chunky, sometimes without a flow but it’s
only used as a reference (refresh) and not to drive the course. The trainer will drive the
course via the tool and refer to the slides when needed.

Module 1: Introduction
Time: 30 to 45 minutes

 Welcome everyone to the course and introduce yourself to the audience.

 Ask the participants to introduce themselves and to let you know their level of
experience with the tool (New user, Somewhat experienced user, Experienced
user, etc). This helps to determine if more focus on specific topics is needed.
 Pass the Sign-In Sheet.
 Talk a little bit about Ascom, its 3 main division and specifically about the
Network Testing division and the TEMS Product Portfolio.
 Review the course outline and module objectives then start the course 

INTRODUCTION:

Slide 4: What is TEMS Discovery

Slide 5: Efficient Data Processing: 32 or 64 bit, multi thread (dual core = 2 logs, Quad
core = 4 logs.......) and back grounded processing.
Slide 6: ADP
Slide 7: Access to Data Sources: downlink, uplink, mapping data, cell files etc......
Slide 8 & 9: Integrated Platform: Tech and equipment
Slide 10: Sharing of data:
Slide 11: Package Comparison:
Slide 12: TEMS Discovery

This will conclude the introduction part of TEMS Discovery.

Time to get into the tool.

The next three slides are used as a reference on important parts of the module which
will be used at the end of the work in the tool.
USERINTERFACE & TERMINOLOGY

Open TEMS Discovery and review the GUI. Start with the menu and move right to left
and up to down. Discuss around the different functions in this area on a high level.

 File, Views, Tools, Configuration, Help

 Tool and Configuration short cuts: Import short cut, ADP, Batch printing, Script
Creation and Report Template Builder.
 Google/Bing
 Analysis views: Map View, Line Chart, Message View, Table View, Instant
Chart, Point details, Wave View, Histogram, Correlation View, Sector Statistics,
Problem Summary
 Sync
 Replay

Move to the side views: Project Explorer, Document List, GIS/Coverage maps, Task
Windows, Messages.

After the walk through of the main software interface we can start with:

Project Explorer: Always start at the top of the tree: This is where we open or edit the
project properties but do not work with data. This can be confusing at the start for some
students when they have the Project Explorer and Explorer (in project) opened at the
same time.

1. Private data vs. Public data: Private data is projects located under the user and
Public data is shared by all users. To move a project to Public data right click =
Upload.

2. Active Projects vs. Archive Projects: You can move archive projects when
completed to the Archive to save space. TD will not remove the active project
once archived. Disk space savings around 25% depending on project contents.
Demoproject Active = 30MB, 8MB archived.

3. If possible connect to a remote user to discuss peer to peer.

4. Open the tree for the DemoProject_WCDMA and review the Dataset tree
structure. A dataset is created when importing one or more raw measurement
data files and are organized according to certain attributes and a Composite is
processed data from one for more datasets of a project can be logically
combined into a composite set. We will spend more time on this in the next
module when we prepare the project.

5. Review and discuss what the device attribute are: Right click on the dataset in
the DemoProject_WCDMA <TD> 1019 and choose File/Device grouping by.
Change the device attribute to the Device, IMSI, IMEI, Device Description and
back to File Name. Device attributes can be defined by the measurement file or
the user can define their own.
6. Users can define device attributes with the Global Edit Device attributes or
apply values to existing device attributes. Users can edit the value by adding
conditions (or unconditionally), Show an example for Benchmarking

IMSI: 31026043118733 = Operator 1

IMSI: 31026043118775 = Operator 2

This will be shown again during the import data chapter of the course to show
how to add attributes to imported measurement files at import so the user does
not have to manually edit the attributes.

7. We will also spend more time on the project properties when we import data
into a new project in the next module “preparing data”.

Document List / GIS / Task Window / Message View:

1. Documents are the settings of the specific data sources, displayed metrics, and
view layouts which can be saved and shared
2. Please note to the students that mapping data is NOT directly imported into a
project but into a Geo Area to be used between projects
3. Task Window: View status of ongoing background tasks
4. Message View: holds any messages generated from the current operation, can
be help when importing fails for example.

Configuration: One area to review is where the private and public data is stored at
default and how the users can change the drive location of the project data.

Reviewing all configuration menus at this time can be difficult for the students to grasp
since the trainer has not covered all features, but the trainer can review the drop down
configuration window for a small overview and refer back in each module when
needed.

1. Export and Import configurations created by the user

2. Change plot bands (ranges and colors for the metrics)
3. Data Networking
4. Overall Tool options

Walk through: Have this enabled to review with students the important bits, if they get
stuck later on with the software: GIS, Creation of Project, import data etc.

Review Slides for module: Slide 11-13.
