Introduction
1. State your central inquiry question
What are the initiation rites of Hope church and how do they differ from
general Christianity?
2. Introduce the community and/or cultural phenomena that you
researched
The community that I researched was a campus ministry known as Hope
church, which is involved in nondenominational Christianity.
3. Why this community now
This community has been shown to stray away from the original
Christianity beliefs and participates in cult like activities.
2. Methods
1. Explain your research process
1. Observation
Attended multiple sunday sermons at the church on sundays at 7
pm. Also involved in connect group meetings on tuesdays at 4;30
pm which is college freshman girls meeting together.
2. Interviewing
Sent emails to the church members and handed out questionnaires
to different church members.
3. Secondary Research
Researched through multiple articles to see how the initiation rites
of Hope church differentiate from standard nondenominational
Christianity, these articles identified the differences that Hope
participates in that don’t align with standard Christianity,
information regarding cult-like behavior from 2016
3. Results
1. Explain what you found during your research
1. Artifacts/Objects
The Bible is the basis of every part of their activities and is looked
upon to identify beliefs or ideas
2. Places/Locations
The Found:re hotel, Hope church tempe office, Arizona State
University
3. People/Behaviors
Cult-like behavior, Pastor Brian as founder and lead
4. Activities/Events
Tuesday night volleyball, connect groups, end of the month
baptisms, Sunday Sermons,
4. Discussion (Conclusion)
1. Discuss the significance of your “results”
Results conclude that Hope church does not directly follow the rules of
campus religion association, interactions with students relate to cult like
behavior therefore diminishing relation to Christianity and creating
differences, results state the process required in becoming a member and
leading up to baptism
2. Answer the question: Based on your research into your
community’s cultural phenomena, what are their central values,
interests, and obstacles?
Central values based on Bible and ten commandments, interests in
gaining new members for the church and spreading the word of God into
different/multiple college campuses, the obstacles they face are based
upon their conviction of being seen as a cult with extreme differences
from general nondenominational Christianity
3. Answer the question: So what?
This church which serves specifically for Arizona State University college
students has to surpass a devastating blow to their reputation based on
2016 charges that stereotype them to being a cult. Their initiation rites
that differentiate from general nondenominational Christianity are seen as
cult-like behavior and therefore are misinterpreted. This community is
stereotyped based on a report from a church that separated from.
