AIR FORCE COMBATIVES PROGRAM USAFA COMBATIVES 1

SESSION ONE

INTENT: Provide the students with context for Combatives courses, a working knowledge of fighting
ranges, angles & levels, basic stances & footwork, how to stand up properly, introduction to TSI and
dealing with unknown contact, shield block, pummeling, front takedown, and an introduction to ground
fighting dominant positions.

TRAINING METHODOLOGY: Describe, Demonstrate, Dissect, Drill, and Debrief.

POINTS OF INSTRUCTION:
 Discuss Combatives context and course intent & outcomes
 Describe and demonstrate the fighting ranges, angle and level
 Teach the 21 Foot Drill
 Describe and demonstrate interview stance, fighting stance and movement & drill
 Describe and demonstrate Stand-Up in Base & drill
 Introduce Ask, Tell, Make & concept of applying TSI with unknown contact
 Describe and demonstrate Shield Block into Clinch
 Describe and demonstrate Pummeling & drill
 Describe and demonstrate Front Takedown, Figure Four Control and Egress to Standing
 Describe and demonstrate four Dominant Body Positions
 4 min. positional rolling from dominant body positions

NOTES:
 Describe fighting ranges in correlation with armed and unarmed technique. Projectile, striking and
clinch. Describe importance of angle and level in context of combat.
 Teach the 21 Foot Drill – Get two cadets from the class and have one of them put the weapon
on. This is an excellent lead into the class to teach range. From striking range with both cadets in
interview stance, instruct the cadets that when you say “go” the cadet with the weapon has to
draw the weapon before the cadet without a weapon can touch him or her. The objective of the
cadet without the weapon is to touch the cadet with the weapon before he or she is able to
successfully draw. Whoever wins, wins. Repeat this a few times, gradually increasing the distance
between the cadets at start, until the cadet with the weapon is able to successfully draw and aim
before being contacted, or they are at approximately 21 ft. This is also instrumental in helping to
demonstrate why the weapon may not always be effective and why hand to hand combat is
necessary.
 Teach Interview Stance: Hips square, WS leg slightly back, feet shoulder-width apart, open
hands at chest level, and relaxed posture, but alert.
 Teach Fighting Stance: Hands are up and hips are oriented forward. Weapon side must be back
from enemy. Students must keep posture and not slouch.
 Teach Basic Footwork: Use footwork to maintain a good base and opportunity to attack or
defend based on body position. Step in direction of movement first, then slide 2nd foot in the same
direction, maintaining staggered (WS back) stance and shoulder-width distance between feet.
Feet should not line up on horizontal or vertical plane, feet should not draw completely together,
and legs should not cross. Use proper footwork to adapt to an unknown contact or aggressor by
matching angle (facing your opponent) and not letting them cut you off on either side or move to
an advantageous position.

Created on 8/28/2018
Drill: Pair up and move with one leading and the other following movement.
 Teach Stand Up in Base: Objective is to move from side hip defensive position to standing safely
and effectively. Instructor will give the command, “Stand by,” and Cadets move to starting position:
On WS hip with WS hand posted behind, SS foot posted, WS leg loaded. Instructor gives
command, “Take your stance,” and Cadets respond as follows. From side hip defensive position,
Cadets reinforce shield blocking face with SS forearm and say, “Shield.” Cadets elevate and
extend hips through WS hand and SS leg posts, kicking toward enemy’s knee with WS leg and
call, “Kick.” Cadets thread WS leg under body, post knee behind WS hand, call, "Knee."
Maintaining shield, Cadets build base & assume fighter's stance while calling, “Recover.” In a
fighting stance, Cadets back up and create space, completing the stand up in base with final call,
“Hands up." It is crucial to create range before attempting to stand up to avoid being struck.
Drill: Once Cadets are proficient with movement, have one Cadet on floor, adjusting angle as
other Cadet circles him or her. When the standing Cadet gets too close, Cadet on floor stands
up in base, then they switch roles. Helps Cadets understand level.
 Introduce concept of Ask, Tell, Make & start using TSI to determine intent of unknown contact:
Explain progression of ask, tell, make, including concept of pre-emptive striking. Have Cadets pair
up and take turns approaching each other from blind angle. Have Cadets make up scenarios as
they go so the person being approached has to engage with other Cadet to determine motives
and personal safety. Cadets should be moving around at angles while attempting to maintain
personal space, being sure not to back away in a straight line.
 Teach Shield Block into clinch: SS hand cupped behind own neck with elbow pointed forward,
chin down, eyes up, WS arm reaches across to SS forearm at forehead, should still be able to
see!
Drill: Have one Cadet “throw” swinging punch & have other Cadet use shield block to close
space.
 Teach the Neutral Tie-Up Position: Introduce pummeling.
Drill: Have Cadets flow while pummeling then call out “Fight” at intervals. When command
“Fight” is given, Cadets should fight for double unders at full resistance.
 Teach Front Takedown: Once double-unders are achieved, break enemy’s posture and bring
weapon side leg around to prevent enemy’s ability to step back, bring non-weapon side leg
forward while continuing to break enemy’s balance with gable grip and head pressure, walk
enemy to ground. End in front mount position with laces dirty. Throw two elbows with weapon-side
arm then disengage with CPR press to knee on belly, maintaining near wrist control. Transition to
figure four control, check 360° & egress. Partner on bottom orients hips to face enemy and stands
up in base. SAFETY: Airman being taken down must not post arms and must allow legs to
straighten as they fall so that they do not end up trapped beneath them; students should
all be taken down in same direction.
 Teach 4 Dominant Body Positions on the ground and introduce ROE for ground fighting (no
standing, slamming, striking, stacking, etc.). Teach each position in context of situational
awareness, capacity to strike/finish the fight, access to weapon/weapon retention, and capacity to
egress. Have Cadets try each position (dom & non) with resistance for 10-30 seconds.
 Rear Mount:
 Dominant: Cadet seated behind non-dominant Cadet with hooks in & over-under grip.
Hands clasped in S-grip & head down.
 Non-dominant: 2-on-1 control on enemy’s top arm, chin tucked, legs loaded.
 Front Mount:
 Top: Posture, knees in armpits, butt heavy, tops of feet toward floor “dirty laces” (no “duck”
feet)
 Bottom: Knees bent (hips loaded), elbows close to body & protecting face.

Created on 8/28/2018
 Side Mount:
 Top: Control head, hips, and hands. Place body weight on top of enemy chest to chest at
near perpendicular angle. Bottom knee and elbow control enemy’s hips, other elbow
controls enemy’s neck on far side, top knee is extended for stabilization and to put as much
weight as possible on enemy’s chest.
 Bottom: Legs bent, near side arm builds frame at enemy’s hip, far side arm either builds
frame at enemy’s neck or pummels for an underhook.
 Closed Guard: Explain to Cadets why the guard is the best case scenario for a bad position;
we do not want to be on our backs if we can avoid it, but at least we have control of enemy’s
hips & potential to sweep, disengage, or attack submissions.
 Bottom (dom): Legs locked around enemy’s waist. Use legs & hips to control enemy’s
posture. Demonstrate how to minimize opponent’s strikes
 Top (non-dom): Sit back on heels, establish good posture with spine, keep arms inside on
“railroad tracks.”
 ALWAYS CHECK CADET SAFETY AT END OF CLASS!

SESSION TWO

INTENT: Provide the students with another control position (hook & pike) on the feet and an
additional takedown, review ground fighting positions, teach Drill A, 3 submissions, and tapping
procedures.

TRAINING METHODOLOGY: Describe, Demonstrate, Dissect, Drill, and Debrief.

POINTS OF INSTRUCTION:
 Review interview & fight stances & basic footwork
 Review pummeling & drill
 Review shield block & front takedown with figure four egress
 Describe and demonstrate Shield Block to Underhook & Frame with knee strike(s)
 Describe and demonstrate Underhook & Frame to Hook & Pike control position
 Describe and demonstrate Hook and Pike to Guillotine Choke
 Describe and demonstrate Underhook & Frame to Outside Trip
 Describe and demonstrate Elbow Escape
 Describe and demonstrate Scissor Sweep AND Hip Heist Sweep
 Have class work Drill A (Elbow Escape into Scissor Sweep or Hip Heist Sweep)
 Describe and demonstrate the Rear Naked Choke
 Describe and demonstrate the Americana
 10 minute rolling session

NOTES:
 Perform review of basic stances & footwork.
 Review pummeling & drill & have Cadets fight for double underhooks.
 Review shield block & front takedown with figure four egress.
 Teach Shield Block to Underhook & Frame w/ knee strikes: From shield block, pummel SS arm
and grip at enemy’s shoulder, frame at enemy’s near side with WS arm, hand cupping traps.
Staying squared to opponent, deliver knee strike(s) to center mass to elicit response.
 Teach Underhook & Frame to Hook & Pike control position: If opponent’s posture remains
broken down in response to knees, turn frame into pike control by bracing at opponent’s neck with
thumb down. Keep under hook and shoulder grip with SS arm and blade away up to 90°.
 Teach Hook and Pike to Guillotine Choke: If opponent attempts to turn into you or drive forward
from hook & pike control position, snap head to SS armpit for guillotine. SS forearm is across front
of neck of enemy, his or her head in armpit and your shoulder covering back of their neck.
Reinforce primary choking grip with WS hand cupping pinky-side of SS arm to help execute
choke. Square up base, keep knees slightly bent & shrug shoulders while drawing SS forearm into
enemy’s neck to finish guillotine choke. SAFETY: Students must be briefed to physically tap
their partner and also verbally say, “tap tap tap” whenever possible when they feel
pressure from the choke.
 Teach Underhook & Frame to Outside Trip: If opponent postures up and attempt to pull back in
response to knees or from hook & pike control position, drive forward pressure with frame and
underhook, step slightly outside and in line with enemy’s hips with SS leg and perform outside trip
by “donkey” kicking WS leg behind opponent’s near leg while applying forward pressure with
upper body. Follow enemy down and transition to figure four control. Check 360° & egress.
Partner on bottom orients hips to face enemy and stands up in base.

Created on 8/28/2018
 Teach Elbow Escape: Enemy is in front mount attempting to strike. Bridge hips to create space
and avoid strikes. Shrimp to one side and use elbows/forearms to frame enemy’s hips. As bottom
elbow pushes enemy’s thigh out (“opening the gate”), bring own shin under enemy’s thigh and up
to elbow, utilize an underhook to help establish half guard while switching hooks (trapping
enemy’s leg). Use bottom elbow (or hands) to push enemy’s other (free) leg out and clear own
bottom knee with shrimping motion, blocking enemy’s leg with shin. Perform additional shrimp to
opposite hip (“hip transfer”) to clear leg. Circle foot out (“egg beater”) to establish closed guard.
 Teach Scissor Sweep: From bottom closed guard, grasp mirror-side arm with thumbed grip &
cross collar with opposite hand, placing fingers in & thumb out (if no collar, cup behind neck).
Using foot on same side as arm controlling enemy's head/collar, post on ground to shrimp and
face arm you are controlling. Drop bottom leg to the ground and drive top knee across enemy's
belt line, "shin like a belt, foot like a hook." Pull enemy's weight forward using controlling grips and
top leg, arch back, and scissor legs, sweeping enemy at 45° angle while looking over bottom
shoulder; ride enemy's dropping weight for momentum to end in front mount.
SAFETY: student who is being swept should make a fist with their hand to avoid rolling
over their own wrist while being swept.
 Teach Hip Heist Sweep: Sit up at angle to establish high position with armpit over enemy's
shoulder. Pummel arm over enemy’s shoulder to establish overhook; pinch it toward your body.
Post opposite hand and both feet on floor to elevate hips. Drive through hips to the side of
enemy’s arm that is trapped, following enemy’s hips and landing in front mount.
 Combine elbow escape, & scissor sweep or hip heist option to build Drill A: Start in front mount,
elbow escape into guard then scissor sweep or hips heist sweep your partner (depending on if
their posture is up or down). Partner then does the same to you. Drill is circular.
 Teach Rear Naked Choke: Start in seated rear mount (sledding position) with both hooks in &
over-under harness position. Reach enemy's neck with top harness arm with bicep against one
side of neck & forearm on other side. Secure position on your own shoulder if possible while
release bottom harness arm. Place hand of the choking arm on biceps or shoulder of your
opposite arm (depending on size of choker and chokee) then drive free hand and forearm as deep
behind enemy’s neck as possible. Tuck your head down, protecting eyes and finish choke by
expanding chest, rowing shoulders back, and closing elbows together. SAFETY: Students must
be briefed to physically tap their partner and also verbally say, “tap tap tap” whenever
possible when they feel pressure from the choke.
 Teach Americana from Side Mount: Use both hands to grab enemy’s hand at wrist and pin his
hand to the mat (his palm should be facing up). Use thumbless grip with top arm to keep his wrist
pinned to the ground, pressing own top arm to the mat as well, with the elbow tight to the “elbow
notch” on enemy’s neck. Thread lower hand under enemy’s bicep to grab your own wrist with
thumbless grip creating figure four control of enemy’s arm. Enemy’s arm should be bent at 90°
angle with wrist and back of hand pressed into the mat. Keeping enemy’s wrist on the mat,
reverse throttle both grips in figure four and draw enemy’s elbow down towards his hips while
using lower arm to elevate enemy’s elbow simultaneously until you achieve the tap out (prior to
shoulder dislocation).
 Teach Americana from Front Mount: Grips are exactly the same as in side mount, but if need to
create more space to finish the submission, slide own knee toward enemy hips on side of attack.
 Review ROE for live ground training and conduct a 10-15 minute positional rolling session.
 ALWAYS CHECK CADET SAFETY AT END OF CLASS!

SESSION THREE

INTENT: Provide the students with a third control position from the feet (rear clinch), an additional
takedown, teach escapes from side mount, and Drill B.

TRAINING METHODOLOGY: Describe, Demonstrate, Dissect, Drill, and Debrief.

POINTS OF INSTRUCTION:
 Review pummeling & drill
 Review shield block & front takedown with figure four egress
 Review shield block to pummel & frame with outside trip, hook & pike control, or guillotine choke.
 Describe and demonstrate Shield Block to Seat Belt Clinch
 Describe and demonstrate Rear Takedown
 Review Drill A
 Describe and demonstrate Drill B (arm trap & roll, under leg guard pass, lockdown & transition to
front mount)
 Describe and demonstrate Side Mount Bridge Escape
 Describe and demonstrate the Side Mount Shrimp Escape
 Roll for remainder of class

NOTES:
 Review pummeling & drill & have Cadets fight for double underhooks.
 Review shield block & front takedown with figure four egress
 Review shield block to pummel & frame with outside trip, hook & pike control, or guillotine choke.
 Teach Shield Block to Seat Belt Clinch: From shield block, frame at enemy’s bicep with SS
hand and pummel WS underhook, grabbing at shoulder and move past 90° to be almost behind
enemy’s body. As transition around the corner, bicep frame hand slides down enemy arm to
control the wrist. Bump enemy forward with near knee, hip, and underhook grip to clear head to
enemy’s back side. Reach underhook arm around enemy’s back to control enemy’s WS bicep (if
both people are righty), establishing 2-on-1 control on enemy’s WS arm and the rear or seat belt
clinch.
 Teach Rear Takedown: From seat belt clinch position, transition hips and trunk to enemy’s WS,
staying tight to enemy and at approximately 45° behind him or her. Set SS foot behind enemy’s
SS heel, taking enemy down to his or her back side. Keep SS leg bent as lower and sit to own SS
hip. Once contact the floor sit up and establish figure four control position. Check 360° & egress.
Partner on bottom orients hips to face enemy and stands up in base.
SAFETY: In class we always take partner down with rear takedown to the side of the
shoulder that is NOT being controlled!
 Review Drill A and have Cadets practice with increasing levels of resistance. Include americanas
when get to front mount for additional review.
 Teach Arm Trap and Roll: From under front mount, bridge hips to make enemy post arms. Bring
head out of centerline (outside of one of enemy’s arms) and grab enemy’s arm closest to your
head at their elbow with both your hands. Break arm down and pull into your chest, keeping
control of arm. Post your foot outside of enemy’s lower leg on same side you are controlling
enemy’s arm (trapping enemy’s shin) and bring your other leg more centerline. Bridge hips and
roll opponent at 45° over your shoulder (not to your side) on side of arm & shin control (where they
do NOT have posts). Follow with hips & trunk, escaping to be in his or her guard.

Created on 8/28/2018
 Teach Under the Leg Guard Pass: From inside enemy’s guard, press hands on enemy’s hips &
both elbows into enemy’s inner thighs, keeping good posture in trunk & spine. Bring one knee
centerline and widen base with opposite leg and move hips back, opening enemy’s guard at
ankles. Arm opposite open space frames inner thigh, keeping elbow in to avoid being the triangle
choke, while arm closest to open space pummels under thigh, loading enemy's hamstrings on
shoulder. Reach pummeled arm to enemy's far-side trap, apply body weight, driving enemy's knee
toward his or her head. Turn the corner with hips, applying chest pressure, until reach side mount
position & transition to lockdown.
 Teach Lock Down & Transition from Side to Front Mount: To achieve lockdown, arm closest to
head pummels under neck, other arm pummels under enemy's far side arm. Clasp hands in palm-
to-palm thumbless grip and drive shoulder through jawline to keep enemy from turning into you.
To transition to front mount from side mount lockdown, release underhook arm to act a post in
case enemy attempts to bridge you over to far side during transition. Slide bottom knee across
enemy's belly toward far armpit using a low profile. Place knee to mat followed by foot & release
lockdown arm from enemy’s head to establish full mount position.
 Combine arm trap & roll, under leg guard pass, lockdown & transition from side to front mount to
build Drill B. Drill is circular.
 Teach Side Mount Bridge Escape: From under side mount position, establish defensive
underhook with outside arm and frame enemy’s hip with inside arm. Bridge hips while bumping hip
frame and driving with underhook in order create space. As bridge, block enemy’s near leg with
hip-frame-arm, turn into opponent and “thread the needle” with legs while steering with trunk and
underhook to reverse the position and end up on top of side mount.
 Teach Side Mount Shrimp Escape: If enemy has established side mount position with lock-down
(crossface) and you cannot effectively pummel for underhook, establish frames with arms at
enemy’s neck and hip. Initiate a bridge with hips and press up through frames at same time to
create space. On way down from bridge, shrimp hips and turn to face enemy, driving bottom leg
between you and enemy. Arm nearest enemy's head pummels for (or maintains) underhook while
by pressing shin into enemy’s belly and straightening out the spine to be facing the enemy.
Shrimp to opposite hip to create angle to circle out leg from enemy's beltline, establishing closed
guard.
 Review ROE for live ground training and conduct a 10-15 minute positional rolling session, as time
allows.
 ALWAYS CHECK CADET SAFETY AT END OF CLASS!

SESSION FOUR

INTENT: Provide the students with a working knowledge of Drill 3 and explain Standing Evaluation
that will be executed in lesson 5.

TRAINING METHODOLOGY: Describe, Demonstrate, Dissect, Drill, and Debrief.

POINTS OF INSTRUCTION:
 Explain format of Standing Evaluation before standing review
 Review pummeling & drill
 Review shield block & front takedown with figure four egress
 Review shield block to pummel & frame with outside trip, hook & pike control, or guillotine choke.
 Review shield block to seat belt clinch & rear takedown
 Review Drills A & B, with americanas
 Describe & demonstrate Drill C (ratchet to rear mount, RNC, rear mount escape from turtle, over
leg guard pass to front mount)
 Describe & demonstrate Rear Mount Escape from Seated (sledding)
 Roll for remainder of class

NOTES:
 Explain format and content of Standing Evaluation.
 Review pummeling & drill & have Cadets fight for double underhooks.
 Review shield block & front takedown with figure four egress.
 Review shield block to pummel & frame with outside trip, hook & pike control, or guillotine choke.
 Review shield block to seat belt clinch & rear takedown.
 Review Drill A with americana from front mount.
 Review Drill B with americana from side mount.
 Teach Rachet to Rear Mount: With both hands, force enemy’s elbow/triceps across the enemy’s
neck. Ensure enemy's fist is to the ground with arm trapped past centerline (for wrist safety in
practice). Apply chest pressure onto the enemy’s arm and reach hand underneath enemy’s head
from opposite side, grabbing enemy’s wrist. Place free hand on the back of arm, push on the back
of the arm while pulling on the wrist, and driving with your chest. Repeat the ratchet movement,
incrementally forcing enemy belly down while you stay on top. As enemy’s legs turn, slide your leg
under to get your first hook in. If enemy’s hips lift on own, slide your other hook in as well. If not,
reach back and lift other leg with pants to insert 2nd hook, or wait until enemy tries to turtle up to
escape to put in second hook. Grab collar at back of neck and push enemy’s head down while
keeping good posture. If enemy establishes a base, utilize both hooks and pummel under both
armpits and sprawl to flatten enemy back to ground.
 Teach Rear Mount Escape from Turtle: From under rear mount, flattened on the floor belly
down, protect neck from choke with arms and work knees to elbows, establishing a turtle position.
Use a bucking motion get your enemy's hands on the ground to prevent striking, then capture one
arm utilizing a baseball bat grip. Move your head outside of centerline & keep control of enemy's
captured arm. Tuck chin & roll enemy to side you are controlling. Keeping control of arm, drive
your back to the ground, post outside leg and thread the needle so you turn belly to belly with
enemy and end up in their guard. Establish good guard pass posture.
 Teach Over the Leg Guard Pass: Open the guard just as in the under leg guard pass. Once
ankles are unlocked, if you are unable to pass under a leg due the leg being “heavy” when try to
pummel under it, use same arm to push enemy's thigh down to floor instead. Keeping hand on
knee, bring same side shin over enemy's thigh between his or her knee and hip, pinning thigh.
Created on 8/28/2018
Reach for lockdown with arms, putting weight on enemy’s center mass while driving weight
forward, keeping leg pinned. Maintaining shoulder pressure, release other arm as post and slide
rear leg over enemy's thigh as well, then windshield both feet out to establish front mount.
 Combine ratchet to rear mount, rear mount escape from turtle, and over leg guard pass to front
mount to build Drill C. For additional practice, have Cadets execute a rear naked choke once they
have established control in rear mount before partner executes escape.
 Teach Rear Mount Escape from Seated (sledding): Show Cadets how the rear mount escape
from turtle translates to the sledding position & let them know that is how they will start on ground
fighting GRs in C1 when start in rear mount.
 Review ROE for live ground training and conduct a 10-15 minute positional rolling session, as time
allows.
 ALWAYS CHECK CADET SAFETY AT END OF CLASS!
