Subject Area Mathematics Grade Three
Topic Data Analysis Time 15 minutes

Learning Objectives
Students will:
Collect first hand data and organizing it using tally marks
Construct, label and interpret bar graphs to solve problems/answer questions.

Assessment
Students will fill out a worksheet where they will tally their data (number of M&M’s for
each colour), and will then fill out a bar graph to represent their data, while labeling the
x and y axis. Next they will answer a few questions based on their data; I will collect
these pages at the end of the lesson to ensure understanding.

Materials
White board markers 20+ bags of fun sized M&M’s
Worksheets Pencil crayons

Introduction 7 minutes
Prior to the lesson, I will have drawn a basic graph, sans the data, and write out three
questions on the board (the same questions will be on the worksheet). I will begin the
lesson by asking the students about their pets; how many of them have
cats/dogs/fish/ETC. I will input the data onto my graph, highlighting the areas of the
graph that must be labeled. I will ask them to interpret the information on the graph by
answering three questions: what type of pet is most popular, what type of pet is least
popular, and finally a comparison question.

Body 6 minutes
The students will be given one fun size bag of M&M’s each, along with two worksheets:
one will have a tally chart along with a couple of questions, while the other will be a
basic outline of a graph, for them to fill in. I will emphasize that students may NOT eat
their candy until the END of the lesson.
1.) Students will be asked to tally the number of M&M’s for each colour (2 yellow, 5
green, etc) and express their tally marks with numbers.
2.) Students will label the x and y-axis.
3.) Students will colour in the correct number of boxes to match their tallied data.
4.) Students will check their work by placing the M&M’s into the corresponding
boxes on the graph they coloured; if there is one candy in each box, which means
they did it correctly.
5.) Once finished, students will return to the previous worksheet where they will be
asked to interpret the information on the graph to answer a couple of questions:
“what colour do you have the most of?” “What colour do you have the least of?” “I
have more ________ M&M’s than I do __________ M&M’s.”
Closure 2 minutes
I will ask students to colour in one of the three cartoon faces at the bottom of the page;
happy face, neutral face, and sad face, to indicate to me how they enjoyed the lesson. I
will then collect the worksheets.

Notes and Ideas

 Encourage students to work together; although their data will differ, it may be
useful especially when answering the questions at the end
 *Questions, comments, or concerns
