INDICATIONS FOR CEFUROXIME:

Susceptible mild to moderate infections including pharyngitis/tonsillitis, acute maxillary

sinusitis, chronic bronchitis, acute otitis media, uncomplicated skin and skin structure, UTIs,
gonorrhea, early Lyme disease.

METHOD OF ADMINISTRATION
IV Incompatibilities
Additive: Aminoglycosides, ciprofloxacin, ranitidine, sodium bicarbonate
Syringe: Doxapram
Y-site: Azithromycin, cisatracurium (potentially; compatible at low concentration [0.1 mg/mL]),
clarithromycin, filgrastim, fluconazole, midazolam, vancomycin, vinorelbine
IV Compatibilities
Solution: D5W, NS
Additive: Clindamycin, floxacillin, furosemide, gentamicin (incompatible in total parenteral
nutrition [TPN]), metronidazole, midazolam, netilmicin
Y-site (partial list): Acyclovir, allopurinol, amiodarone, diltiazem, linezolid, milrinone, morphine
sulfate, ondansetron, propofol, tacrolimus
IV Preparation
Direct injection: reconstitute in 8 mL (for 750-mg vial) or 16 mL (for 1.5-g vial) to obtain ~90
mg/mL solution
Infusion: Reconstitute in 100 mL SWI, D5W or NS to obtain 7.5 mg/mL (750-mg vial) or 15
mg/mL (1.5-g vial) solution
7.5 g bulk package not to be used for direct injection
IM Preparation
Reconstitute 750 mg in 3 mL SWI to obtain ~220 mg/mL solution
IV Administration
Direct injection: Inject directly into vein over 3-5 minutes or slowly into tubing of free-flowing
compatible IV solution
Infusion: Infuse intermittently over 15-60 minutes

Common side effects of cefuroxime include:

 Nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea
 Kidney problems
 Diaper rash
 Yeast infection

Serious side effects of cefuroxime include but are not

limited to:
 Life-threatening allergic reaction called anaphylaxis in which you may have
trouble breathing, your throat closes up, and your skin breaks out into hives
 Swelling of the face, including eyes, lips, mouth, tongue, and throat
 Severe and possibly life-threatening skin-reactions like Steven-Johnsons
syndrome or toxic epidermal necrolysis (TENs)
 Blood disorders like low platelet count or low levels of all blood cells
 Low levels of white blood cells
 Seizures
 A severe form of diarrhea noted by loose, watery stool and a foul smell that
is much worse than normal

Cefuroxime Interactions
It's always important to share with your doctor and pharmacist all of the medications you are
taking.
This includes prescription and over-the-counter (OTC) medications, supplements like vitamins
and other dietary supplements (nutritional shakes, proteinpowders, etc.), herbals, and any
illegal or recreational drugs.
You should not take cefuroxime if you are taking Theracrys (BCG live intravesical).
Some other medications that have serious interactions with Cefuroxime include:

 Acid-reflux medications like Tagamet (cimetidine), Dexilant (deslansoprazole),

and Aciphex (rabeprazole)
 Other acid-reflux medications like Pepcid (famotidine), Zantac (ranitidine), and Axid (nizatidine)
 Vivotif (live typhoid vaccine)
 Aluminum hydroxide, calcium carbonate, magnesium hydroxide, sodium bicarbonate
 Cellcept (mycophenolate mofetil) and Myfortic (mycophenolic acid)

Cefuroxime and Alcohol

You should avoid or limit alcohol consumption while taking cefuroxime.

Cefuroxime and Grapefruit Juice

You should avoid eating grapefruit and drinking grapefruit juice while taking cefuroxime.
Grapefruit juice slows down how quickly the body is able to break down cefuroxime, which
could cause levels in the blood to rise dangerously high.

CONDITIONS:

 Decrease in the Blood-Clotting Protein Prothrombin
 increased risk of bleeding due to clotting disorder
 liver problems
 kidney disease with reduction in kidney function

INDICATIONS

Hypertension. Valsartan is indicated for the treatment of hypertension, to lower blood

pressure. Lowering blood pressure reduces the risk of fatal and nonfatal cardiovascular
events, primarily strokes andmyocardial infarctions.

ADMINISTRATION

valsartan is available as tablets for oral administration, containing 40 mg, 80 mg, 160 mg or
320 mg of valsartan.

COMMON SIDE EFFECTS OF DIOVAN INCLUDE:

is an angiotensin II receptor blocker used for the control of hypertension, heart failure, and
post heart attack. Diovan is available as a generic. Common side effects of Diovan include:

 headache,

 dizziness,
 lightheadedness,
 tiredness,
 flu symptoms,
 upper respiratory infection,
 diarrhea,
 cold symptoms (cough, runny or stuffy nose, sneezing, sore throat),
 sinusitis,
 nausea,
 stomach pain,
 swelling,
 blurred vision,
 itching or skin rash,
 back pain, and
 joint pain.

Serious side effects of Diovan include:

 chest pain,
 fainting,
 palpitations,
 shortness of breath,
 weight loss,
 vomiting, and
 swelling of the skin, most often around the lips and eyes.

DRUG INTERACTIONS

No clinically significant pharmacokinetic interactions were observed when Diovan

(valsartan) was coadministered with amlodipine, atenolol, cimetidine, digoxin,
furosemide, glyburide, hydrochlorothiazide, or indomethacin. The valsartan-atenolol
combination was more antihypertensive than either component, but it did not lower the
heart rate more than atenolol alone.

 Coadministration of valsartan and warfarin did not change the pharmacokinetics of

valsartan or the timecourse of the anticoagulant properties of warfarin.
 CYP 450 Interactions
 In vitro metabolism studies indicate that CYP 450 mediated drug interactions between
valsartan and coadministered drugs are unlikely because of the low extent of
metabolism [see CLINICAL PHARMACOLOGY].
 Transporters
 The results from an in vitro study with human liver tissue indicate that valsartan is a
substrate of the hepatic uptake transporter OATP1B1 and the hepatic efflux transporter

MRP2. Coadministration of inhibitors of the uptake transporter (rifampin, cyclosporine)

or efflux transporter (ritonavir) may increase the systemic exposure to valsartan.
 Potassium
 Concomitant use of valsartan with other agents that block the renin-angiotensin system,
potassium-sparing diuretics (e.g., spironolactone, triamterene, amiloride), potassium
supplements, salt substitutes containing potassium or other drugs that may increase
potassium levels (e.g., heparin) may lead to increases in serum potassium and in heart
failure patients to increases in serum creatinine. If comedication is considered
necessary, monitoring of serum potassium is advisable.
 Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Agents including Selective Cyclooxygenase-2 Inhibitors (COX-
2 Inhibitors)
 In patients who are elderly, volume-depleted (including those on diuretic therapy), or
with compromised renal function, coadministration of NSAIDs, including selective COX-
2 inhibitors, with angiotensin II receptor antagonists, including valsartan, may result in
deterioration of renal function, including possible acute renal failure. These effects are
usually reversible. Monitor renal function periodically in patients receiving valsartan
and NSAID therapy.
 The antihypertensive effect of angiotensin II receptor antagonists, including valsartan,
may be attenuated by NSAIDs including selective COX-2 inhibitors.
 Dual Blockade of the Renin-Angiotensin System (RAS)
 Dual blockade of the RAS with angiotensin receptor blockers, ACE inhibitors, or aliskiren
is associated with increased risks of hypotension, hyperkalemia, and changes in renal
function (including acute renal failure) compared to monotherapy. Most patients
receiving the combination of two RAS inhibitors do not obtain any additional benefit
compared to monotherapy [see Clinical Trials]. In general, avoid combined use of RAS
inhibitors. Closely monitor blood pressure, renal function and electrolytes in patients on
Diovan and other agents that affect the RAS.
 Do not coadminister aliskiren with Diovan in patients with diabetes. Avoid use of
aliskiren with Diovan in patients with renal impairment (GFR <60 mL/min).
 Lithium
 Increases in serum lithium concentrations and lithium toxicity have been reported
during concomitant administration of lithium with angiotensin II receptor antagonists,
including Diovan. Monitor serum lithium levels during concomitant use.
 Clinical Laboratory Test Findings

CONTRAINDICATIONS

Valsartan is contraindicated in patients with a known hypersensitivity to valsartan or any of the

product components. Use valsartan with caution in patients with hypovolemia, including patients
receiving high doses of diuretics. Intravascular volume depletion increases the risk
of symptomatic hypotension.
