Moral and Ethics Differentiation:

The word "Moral" is derived from the Latin word "Mos" which means custom. It is an
attribute of a group of society. Moral relates to the principle of right or wrong. Morals are
adopted due to an authority which may be religious or cultural. They come from individual.
Morals are accepted because we believe in something being right or wrong. They are in smaller
scope than ethics and addresses human need for belonging and emulation. Moral norms are
usually expressed as general rules and statements (example: “Always tell the truth.").
On the other hand, ethics relates to what is good or bad with moral duties and
obligations. The word "Ethics" is derived from the Greek word "Ethos" refers "character" is a
personal attribute. They are adopted or absorbed by an individual gradually by taking
reasonable decisions in appropriate situations. Ethics come from social system. Ethics are
accepted because in society it is right thing to do. They are much wider in scope. It examines
the moral standards of a group or society to determine whether these standards are reasonable
or unreasonable in concrete situation. Ethical norms are comparatively abstract. It cannot be
described in general rules and statements.
