Narrator: When Lord Krishna, the supreme personality of Godhead made his
appearance in this world around 5000 years ago, he lived happily with his beloved
family and friends, enjoying life in the beautiful land of Vrindavan. One morning,
when he was 7 years old, everyone was preparing for the yearly festival to worship
Lord Indra, the god of the heavens.
( Mantras are being chanted by Garga Muni, Krishna,s family priest )
Nanda Maharaj: We must celebrate this every year so that Indra gives us rains
which is very important for daily life: that is why we worship this festival every
year.
Krishna: But father, he’s just doing his duty, that is carrying out Lord Vishnu’s
orders.
Nanda Maharaj: O Krishna, this ceremony is an old tradition & we must not give it
up.
Krishna: But father, why don’t we worship the Sun or the Earth or the Yamuna
river?
Nanda Maharaj: we must not ignore traditions that have been observed for
generations.
Krishna: But father, we must not follow traditions blindly, Lord Vishnu has given
Indra & the other devas their powers.
Garga Muni: What Krishna says is true. All the deva work under lord Vishnu. In
the Vedas, there is no separate sacrifice for Indra
Krishna: we are cowherds, and our wealth is our cows. All of our cows depend on
Govardhan hill. We all depend on Govardhan for everything. Therefore, we should
worship Govardhan and not Indra. My beloved friend s of Vrindavan wen owe our
gratitude to Govardhan hill. Our cows graze on its grass and give us the sweetest
milk. Govardhan is full of trees, fruits, waterfalls, and springs full of fresh water.
We don't depend on Indra but Govardhan hill.
Narrator: And so following Krishna's advice, the villagers took their offering to
Govardhan hill. Krishna turns himself into a giant hill.
Govardhan: Citizens of Vrindavan, you will become purified if you
circumambulate me with your coms and offerings.
Indra: They dare defy me?I’ll teach thar Krishna and his little village a lesson.
Samvartaka - you will go down and do your worst storms. I shall also come down
on elephant. HA HA HA
Villager (1): We must have enraged Indra by stopping his worship. Nanda maharaj
/ Krishna , i know you mean well but your actions have enraged Indra. We must
beg forgiveness at once.
