A. Design considerations

Grade of Cement 53
Maximum Size of aggragate 20 mm
Shape of aggregate Angular III
Degree of workability 0.8 CF
Type of Exposure Very severe Result:
B.Test data for Materials Water Cement FA CA
specific gravity of cement 3.15 Per bag of
Specific gravity of C.A 2.65 cement (kg) 18.75 50.00 42.44 133.13
Specific gravity of F.A 2.65 Per m3 (kg) 182.42 486.49 412.95 1295.4
Water absorbtion Ratio 0.37 1.00 0.85 2.66
CA 0.5 %
Note:Since cement content exceeds 450kg/m3,
FA 1 % special considerations should be given in design
Free surface moisture to the increased risk of cracking due to drying
CA 0 shrinkage in thin sections, or to early thermal
cracking and to the risk of damage to alkali silica
FA 2 % reaction
C.Target mean strength
Assumed standard deviation as per IS 456 2000 for M 40 grade concrete is 5 N/mm2
So fck = fck + 1.65 x s = 48.25 Mpa
D.selection of water cement ratio
The water cement ratio required for the target mean strength of 48.25 Mpa is 0.37.
This is lower than the maximum value of 0.4 prescribed for Very severe exposure as per IS 456 2000
So adopt W/C ratio as 0.37
E.Selection of water and sand content

For 20 mm maximum size agg, sand conforming to grading zone II, water content per cubic
metre of concrete = 180 kg and sand content as % of total agg by absolute volume = 25 %
water content = 180 / m3 of concrete
Sand content as % of total agg by total vol = 25
Correction for water & sand content in total aggregate
Water
conditions content % of sand in total agg
sand conforming
to grading Zone III 0 -1.5
correction for
compaction factor 0 0 0.0
correction for W/C
ratio 0 0.4 0.02
For Angular
aggregate 0 0.0 0.4
Total 0 -1.1
Therefore, req sand content as % of total agg by absol vol = 23.9 %
Req water content = 180 /m3
F.Determination of cement content
W/C ratio = 0.37
Water = 180 litre
Therefore, cement = 486.49 kg/m3
This cement content is adeaquate for Very severe exposue condition
G.Determination of coare and fine aggregate
fa = 408.86 kg/m3
Ca = 1301.87 kg/m3
The mix proportion then becomes
Water lit Cement kg FA kg CA kg
180 486.5 409 1301.9
0.37 1.00 0.84 2.68
The Actual quantities req for the mix per bag of cement
18.5 50.00 42.02 133.8
Correction for water & sand content in the above designed mix
1. For W/C ratio of 0.37, Quantity = 180 litres of water for one m3
2. Extra quantity of water to be added for absorbtion in case of CA, at 0.5% by mass = 6.51 litres
3. Extra quantity of water to be added for absorbtion in case of FA, at 1% by mass = 4.09 litres
4.Quantity of water to be deducted for moisture present in FA, at 2 by mass = 8.18 litres
5.Quantity of water to be deducted for moisture present in CA, at by mass = 0 litres

Actual quantity of water required to be added = 182.42 litres

Actual qauantity of FA required after allowing for free moisture = 412.95 kgs
Actual quantity of CA required after allowing for free moisture = 1295.36
Therefore, the actual quantities of different constituents req for one bag of cement

Water 182.42 kg/m3

Cement 486.49 kg/m3
FA 412.95 kg/m3
CA 1295.4 kg/m3
