Funding opportunities
Dear readers,
"EURAXESS – Researchers in Motion" is a European Commission initiative
focused on researcher mobility and career development.
Among other activities, EURAXESS supports individual researchers in
finding jobs or funding opportunities to make their research stay in Europe a
reality.
On the EURAXESS Portal, we encourage you to consult the:
• EURAXESS Job database that lists thousands of vacancies from more
than 40 European countries and other regions of the world.
• And the Funding database allowing you to search for the funding
programme you need for your mobility or research cooperation project.
Please note that individual researchers from Brazil and other LAC countries
can upload their CVs on the portal, register their searches and create alerts to
be informed when a vacancy matching their profile has been published.
Funding organisations, including from Brazil and other Latin American and
Caribbean countries can publish their jobs, funding opportunities and
scholarships on the portal to increase their visibility and reach the best
candidates worldwide.
To help you identify these opportunities, EURAXESS LAC regularly publishes
open calls to fund researchers' mobility and cooperation with European teams.
A novelty as from this edition, the list now combines funding opportunities open
to both Brazil and other LAC countries. This edition is valid for November.
The jobs, grants and fellowships announced are organised by funding
organisations (including private ones). In section 1, you’ll find calls funded
by the European Commission, in section 2, calls launched by individual EU
member states or associated countries, and in section 3, calls promoted
by LAC institutions open to researchers from Latin America and the
Caribbean. In section 4, you’ll find all the calls that were listed in previous
editions of this document and that are still open.

The vast majority of this funding is allocated on the basis of competitive calls
open to applications from researchers, businesses and other interested
organisations located in any of the EU Member States or countries
associated to Horizon 2020.
It is open to the world, so Brazilian and LAC researchers and institutions are
very welcome to get involved.
The final Work Programme for Horizon 2020 covers the budgetary years 2018,
2019 and 2020, representing an investment of around €30 billion.
Access all open calls on the Horizon 2020 Participant Portal by entering the
Topic ID of the call in the search engine (top-right corner of page).

Organisations from any sector and country, including LAC countries can
participate in H2020 projects.
Only organisations from the Bahamas, Barbados, Brazil, Mexico and
Trinidad and Tobago are not eligible for direct funding by the European
Commission, unless clearly stated. It is suggested that Brazilian and Mexican
organisations check their local co-funding schemes to support their participation
(here for Brazil, and here for Mexico).
Please, note that all Latin American and Caribbean individual researchers
are eligible to funding by MSCA and ERC.

EURAXESS Latin America and the Caribbean
ERC Consolidator Grants – call open
What are the ERC Consolidator Grants?
ERC Consolidator Grants are designed to support excellent Principal
Investigators at the career stage at which they are consolidating their own
independent research team. Up to €2.75 millions are available for projects of up
to 5 years duration.
Who can apply?
Researchers of any nationality with 7-12 years experience since completion
of PhD (Extensions are possible under certain circumstances — see the latest
ERC Work Programme), a scientific track record showing great promise and an
excellent research proposal.
How much?
Consolidator Grants may be awarded up to € 2 million for a period of 5 years.
(pro rata for projects of shorter duration). However, an additional € 0.75 million
can be made available to cover eligible “start-up” costs for researchers moving
from a third country to the EU or an associated country and/or the purchase of
major equipment and/or access to large facilities.
An ERC grant can cover up to 100% of the total eligible direct costs of the
research plus a contribution of 25% of the total eligible costs towards indirect
costs.
Location
Research must be conducted in a public or private research
organisation (known as a Host Institution/HI). It could be the HI where the
applicant already works, or any other HI located in one of the EU Member
States (see also eligibility of UK legal entities) or associated countries.
Important information on the call is included in the ERC Work Programme 2019
and especially in the call-specific Information for Applicants. The mandatory
templates are available from the Participant Portal.
Deadline: 7 February 2019
About the ERC:
Set up in 2007 by the EU, the European Research Council is the first pan-
European funding organisation for frontier research. It aims to stimulate
scientific excellence in Europe by encouraging competition for funding between
the very best, creative researchers of any nationality and age. The ERC also
strives to attract top researchers from anywhere in the world to come to Europe.
It funds young, early-career top researchers ('ERC Starting grants'), already
independent excellent scientists ('ERC Consolidator Grants'), and senior
research leaders ('ERC Advanced Grants').
Please, note that ERC grants support projects carried out by an individual
researcher ('Principal Investigator') who can employ researchers of any
nationality as team members. It is also possible to have one or more team
members located in a non-European country.

EURAXESS Latin America and the Caribbean
ERC Proof of Concept Grant 2019
Additional ERC funding scheme for researchers of all nationalities who
already got an ERC grant (Starting, Consolidator, Advanced or Synergy) which
is either ongoing or where the project has ended less than 12 months before
the publication date of an ERC Proof of Concept call. The grants are worth up
to €150,000 for a duration of up to 18 months. More information here.

Marie Sklodowska-Curie Actions – Open call to
select Innovative training networks (ITN)
Innovative Training Networks (ITN) is the main European doctoral training
programme, putting a special emphasis on non-academic sector participation
and the innovation dimension. Innovative training networks bring together
complementary institutions from different countries worldwide to train a
new generation of researchers.
It is funded under the Marie Skłodowska-Curie actions/ Horizon2020 European
Union funding programme.
The call will be open to consortia of organisations such as universities,
research centres or companies, that propose a research training network,
including Brazilian & Latin American institutions.There are three types of
Innovative Training Networks:
1. European Training Networks (ETN)
Joint research training, implemented by at least three partners from in and
outside academia. The aim is for the researcher to experience different sectors
and develop their transferable skills by working on joint research projects.
The organisations should be established in at least three different EU or
associated countries. Additional participants from any organisation anywhere in
the world, including Brazil & LAC can also join a network.
2. European Industrial Doctorates (EID)
Joint doctoral training delivered by at least one academic partner entitled to
award doctoral degrees, and at least one partner from outside academia,
primarily enterprise. Each participating researcher is enrolled in a doctoral
programme and is jointly supervised by supervisors from the academic and
non-academic sector, where they spend at least 50% of their time.
The aim is for the doctoral candidates to develop skills inside and outside
academia that respond to public and private sector needs.
The organisations should be established in at least two different EU or
associated countries. A wider set of partner organisations from anywhere in the
world may also complement the training.
3. European Joint Doctorates (EJD):
A minimum of three academic organisations form a network with the aim of
delivering joint, double or multiple degrees. Joint supervision of the research
fellow and a joint governance structure are mandatory. The aim is to promote
international, intersectorial and multi/interdisciplinary collaboration in doctoral
training in Europe.

The organisations should be from different EU or associated countries. The

participation of additional organisations from anywhere in the world, including
from the non-academic sector, is encouraged.
The maximum duration of an ITN project is four years. Calls are annual.

Please, note that the call is not open to individual researchers/students.

Brazilian & LAC researchers interested in high quality doctoral-level training in and outside academia can
apply to the PhD positions created by these networks, including Industrial Doctorate and Joint Doctorate. They
are advertised on the Euraxess Job portal.

Horizon 2020 - All Atlantic Ocean Research Alliance

Flagship – Brazilian institutions funded
European Union call under H2020 will be investing € 33 million to fund
research in the Atlantic. In addition to being the first step towards the
implementation of the commitments made by the countries in the Declaration of
Belém, the call meets the United Nations' Sustainable Development Objectives,
especially item 14, "to conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and
resources for sustainable development. "
This is one of the flagship initiatives lauched in H2020 Wok programme 2018-
2020.
Proposals shall include participants from South Africa and Brazil. Under this
topic, legal entities established in Brazil are eligible for funding from the
union.

Doctoral training programme in Functional
Advanced Materials (DOC-FAM) – 2nd call for
applications
DOC-FAM is an excellence DOCtoral training programme in Functional
Advanced Materials awarded to the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC),
coordinated through the Institute of Materials Science of Barcelona (ICMAB) in
collaboration with several partner research Institutions from the area, four of
them contributing to the co-funding of the programme.
ICMAB welcomes applications from the best and brightest candidates with a
degree in a field of science and engineering related to the ICMAB research
activities, for a competitive and multidisciplinary training and research PhD
programme. The diversity of our students and the interdisciplinary research
fields related to Materials Science ensure an enriching working environment to
develop your professional career.

EuroTechPostdoc Programme – Call for
Applications (Incoming)
The EuroTech Universities Alliance invites highly talented experienced
researchers to submit interdisciplinary collaborative research project
proposals for one of the fellowships provided by the EuroTechPostdoc
Programme.
The EuroTechPostdoc Programme is a postdoctoral fellowship programme
for young experienced researchers who have already demonstrated excellence
and potential in their field of research.
The four universities of the EuroTech Universities Alliance – Technical
University of Denmark (DTU), Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne
(EPFL), Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) and Technical University of
Munich (TUM) – will grant 80 fellowships divided over two calls for experienced
researchers. Per call, each university grants 10 fellowships for a 24-month
period to collaborative and interdisciplinary research projects across the
Alliance.
Applicants may apply within one of the five focus research areas of the
EuroTech Universities Alliance: Health & Bioengineering; Smart & Urban
Mobility; Data Science & Engineering; High Performance Computing;
Entrepreneurship & Innovation.
Applications for the second call will open 30 November 2018.

AUSTRIA - Institute of Science and Technology
(IST) PhD programme (Incoming)
WHO ? Open to highly qualified students from all disciplines of the natural
sciences, mathematics, computer sciences and any related interdisciplinary
areas.
Currently active fields of research include biology, neuroscience, physics,
mathematics, data science & computation and computer science.
Applicants must hold a Master's or Bachelor's degree or anticipate the
completion of the degree before September 2017. Participating students are
expected to be proficient in written and oral English.

AUSTRIA - Young Scientists Summer Programme
at IIASA (Incoming)
The International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis IIASA's annual 3-
month Young Scientists Summer Programme (YSSP) in Austria offers
research opportunities to talented PhD students whose interests correspond
with IIASA's ongoing research on issues of global environmental, economic
and social change.
The program is designed for PhD students (ideally about 2 years prior to
receiving their PhD) working on a field compatible with ongoing research at
IIASA and a wish to explore the policy implications of their work.
The programme offers a wide range of scientific events, including both social
and natural sciences, often with important policy dimensions.
From June through August accepted participants work within the
Institute’s research programs under the guidance of IIASA scientific staff.

AUSTRIA – Marietta Blau PhD Grant (Outgoing)
The Marietta Blau Grant offers financial support for doctoral or PhD students of
Austrian universities to carry out the abroad part (6-12 months) of their doctoral
programme: the grant enables scientific research worldwide in the following
fields:

• Agricultural Sciences

• Humanities
Monthly grants of 1,500 Euros are given under this programme. The next

DENMARK - H.C. Ørsted postdoc programme

The Technical University of Denmark (DTU) invites highly talented
experienced researchers who have achieved outstanding results in their
research while demonstrating excellence and potential in their field to apply for
one of the fellowships under the H.C. Ørsted Postdoc programme, co-funded by
Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions.
Eligibility:

The grants aim to facilitate the creation and development of international
networks and research collaboration through research stays in Denmark by
researchers from the growth and transition countries (involved in the Strategic
Sector Cooperation), among them Brazil, Colombia, Mexico.
Eligibility: PhD holders in the areas mentioned above.
Deadline: The call will be open in 2018 as long as funds remain.

FRANCE – Invited Scholars Fellowships at IHEAL

(Incoming) in social sciences
The Institute of Latin American Studies (IHEAL - University Sorbonne Nouvelle-
Paris 3) is calling for Invited professors in all fields of social science. History,
Geography, Anthropology, Sociology, Economy and Political Science. For the
academic year of 2019-2020, courses in Geography and Anthropology, or
focused on Central America, the Caribbean and the Andean countries are
highly preferred. Visiting scholars may be invited to teach within the IHEAL’s
new Masters’ program LAGLOBE (Latin America and Europe in a Global
World), which benefits from the European Union support..

Inserm (Incoming)
WHO? open to young scientists of all nationalities, who have defended their
PhD (or equivalent doctoral degree) within the last 10 years
WHAT? 3-year grant. Can be extended for an additional 2 years.
Projects must relate to Life Sciences or Health. Interdisciplinary projects
allying biology to mathematics, physics, informatics, chemistry, public health will
be examined with a particular attention.

The Eiffel Excellence Scholarship Program was established by the French
Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs to enable French higher education
institutions to attract top foreign students to enroll in their masters and PhD
programs.
The Eiffel Excellence Scholarship Program is awarded to two types of studies:
• Masters level, for a duration between 12 and 36 months;
• Doctorate or PhD level, for research periods in France of up to 12
months, as part of a cotutelle or joint doctoral thesis supervision
(preferably in 2nd year of PhD).
Eiffel scholarships are available in four main fields:
• Law studies;
• Economics and management;
• Engineering sciences at master’s level, Science in a broad sense at
PhD level (engineering sciences; exact sciences: mathematics, physics,
chemistry and life sciences, nano and biotechnology, earth sciences,
sciences of the universe, environmental sciences, information and

(Promigas): Industry-academia partnership call incoming
and outgoing
Under its remit as a delivery partner of the Newton-Caldas Fund, the Academy
has partnered with Promigas to o strengthen capacity and develop capabilities
within Colombian engineering higher education and research institutions to
enhance their engineering education, research and innovation output through
strengthening industry linkages and leveraging UK expertise.
The lead applicant will be an individual at a Colombian university which must
propose a means of collaboration with co-applicants that meet the above-
identified Programme outcome areas. Co-applicants must include at least one
local industry partner and at least one UK university or research institution
partner. Additional partners are not obliged but are encouraged, especially the
involvement of UK industry partners. Industry partners are defined broadly and
may be institutions of any size within private, public or NGO sectors.
Funding
• grants of up to £50,000 to support travel, subsistence and salary
support costs related to conducting collaborative activities amongst
industry and academic partners in Partner Countries and the UK. The
grant value requested must be at least 50% matched in funding or in-
kind resources by the applying consortia. Additional matched funding
above 50% will be viewed positively, being further evidence of the value
placed on the collaboration and its potential for impact.
• As a result of the call, a series of grants in the range of GBP £10,000 to
GBP £50,000 will be issued.

Social Innovation Call for Proposals 2018
The Trans-Atlantic Platform (T-AP) is a collaboration among key humanities
and social science funders in Europe and the Americas. T-AP aims to
enhance transnational research collaboration and has identified, with the help of
the social sciences and humanities research communities, a series of common
challenges and strategic priority areas where such collaboration will bring
added value.
The multi-national and trans-Atlantic projects funded under this call are
expected to both add to understandings of social innovation and deliver social
innovation(s) through new research.
Applicants must apply as a transnational research project partnership,
and partner with a number of national research teams based in the participating
T-AP SI countries listed above. Each project must:
• comprise at least three eligible research partners requiring financial
