1. Data Collection (table)

Substance Biuret Iodine Benedict Ethanol

Changed to
Did not turn purple Got black so has Turned cloudy so
Substance A orange so
so has no protein some starch has lipids
contains glucose
Blue in the bottom Substances just Began looking
Stayed the same
Substance B and yellow in the separated so no cloudy so has
so no glucose
top so no protein evidence of starch lipids
Turned orange so
Turned violet so Turned yellow so It got cloudy so
Substance C proof for presence
has protein no starch includes lipids
of starch
Turned blue so It got brown so Became cloudy so
It got orange so it
Substance D does not contain does not include evidence of
has glucose
protein starch existing lipids
Changed into
It got violet so Turned brown so It turned purple so
Substance E cloudy substance
includes protein no starch evidence glucose
so has lipids
It became orange Cloudy layer
Did not get purple It got black so
Substance F so contains formed explaining
so no protein contains starch
glucose lipid presence
It became a Began changing
Turned cloudy so
greenish color so Changes to black to greenish yellow
Substance G substance
no protein in so it holds starch color so no
includes lipids
substance glucose

2. Conclusion

When we did our lab experiment, we noticed the reactions of the substances A-G as we tested for
each of Protein, Starch, Glucose, and Lipids. Some substances had more than one type of
Macromolecule, but others had only one type.

While Testing for Protein, we added Biuret to see if it turned purple and contained Protein. Not
many substances in this lab contain Protein. When we added Biuret to the solutions, only
substances C and E turned purple. In conclusion, they are the only substances that have Protein in
them.

While testing for Starch, we saw that more substances contained starch than Protein. All three
substances A, F, and G turned black when we added Iodine to them. This means that these three
substances had starch in them.

When we tested for Glucose, we saw that most substances contained it. All substances except for
substance B, G and E turned orange when we added Benedict to the solution and then applied it to
boiling water. This gives us evidence that Glucose was present in those substances.

At last but not least, we saw that all the substances we tested contained lipids. Lipids (which are
oils and fats) proved presence in each of the substances when we added Ethanol to them and then
added the mixture to the same amount of water. All the substances turned cloudy proving that they
contained at least a small amount of Lipids.

All in all, The Macromolecule that the substances contained the least of was Protein, while the most
was Lipids. Below, there is a chart to clarify our results.

3. Sources of error

. While adding ethanol, we couldn’t tell if the substance if it turned cloudy or not
. While testing for glucose on the hot plate we didn’t examine the results for 3/4 minutes
. While testing for each substance, we were not sure if the quantity was 2/3 cm
. While testing for biuret we didn’t add all our samples to the water
. We didn’t look carefully for the characteristics of each solution

4. Suggestions for improvement

. Instead of having unknown substances, creating our own substance and later testing it
. Testing for different types of carbohydrates not only starch
. Make a comparison between what you know and what you learnt
