Leadership Assessment

A hospital runs on communication, teamwork, and leadership. Without leadership,

communication and teamwork cannot be accomplished. According to the leadership

characteristics and skills assessment by Grossman and Valiga, three qualities stood out as most

important in a leader: “a good leader should have excellent communication skills”, “leaders

mentor others to assist them in pursuing their dreams”, “I feel I do make a difference as a nurse

and plan to continue to do so”. These three statements convey the perception of quality

communication, teamwork, and leadership.

As one of the tenets of an effective team, communication is important in all aspects of

health care. Proper understanding is achieved through effective communication and is necessary

between the patient and the health care professionals but also between all the healthcare

members. This interprofessional correspondence ensures that everyone taking care of the patient

is on the same page and can make the care for the patient well-organized. “A good leader should

have excellent communication skills” (Grossman & Valiga, 2016). To be a leader, a leader must

communicate their message to be efficient and have an impact.

A team is sufficient as long as the team works, meaning teamwork is one the most

important elements in the healthcare field. Leaders need to create and understand the unique

dynamics of the team. That means knowing when the be a leader and when to step back and be a

follower. “Leaders mentor others to assist them in pursuing their dreams” (Grossman & Valiga,

2016). By lifting others, leaders lift the whole team up and not just themselves.

Leaders make an impact on the people they guide. This unique effect that leaders have to

inspire others make them so important. “I feel I do make a difference as a nurse and continue to

do so” (Grossman & Valiga, 2016). Confidence in a leader’s ability to lead and make a difference

is vital in their ability to convey their message and continue to affect their patient’s and team.

Nursing is not a single, solo production, it is one section in the overall team of the

hospital. Due to this, nurses must understand proper communication, effective teamwork, and

guiding leadership. Using the leadership characteristics and skills assessment by Grossman and

Valiga, three qualities adequately comprise the meaning of communication, teamwork, and

leadership: “a good leader should have excellent communication skills”, “leaders mentor others

to assist them in pursuing their dreams”, “I feel I do make a difference as a nurse and plan to

continue to do so”.
