The health effects of exposures towards dangerous occupational especially work that
related to the high risk and complex environment often have the high result of injuries and
fatality rate. The top industries that related to the high risk such as firefighters, mining and
chemical industry which a new development in protection for the workers or employees need
to take into account by the employer or an organization. This is because they are more likely to
be exposed to the various hazards during working hours.
Furthermore, the equipment for the firefighters especially their safety suit is not
adequate enough and do not have the safety where their jacket and also trousers is made from
materials that will endure intense heat only and so do to mining rescuers and chemical rescuers
because they are exposed to such factors as fire, explosions, high temperature, dangerous toxic
substances, limited visibility, high humidity and a limitation of breathable air. Other than that,
these professions are associated with rescue activities which need to be performed in
atmospheres with hazardous contaminants that may affect human body. Besides, the most
important factor is, the lack of communication between rescue team or between the recuer and
the Rescue Coordination Centre where it may lead to the negative impact.
The new development of intelligent personal protective systems (PPE) is focused for
firefighters, mine rescuers and chemical rescuers which the system is being upgraded on the
integration of protective clothing with various sensory and monitoring system where the Rescue
Coordination Centre (RCC) could monitored the user’s health condition especially during
rescue activities such as the lack of oxygen or oxygen defiency, toxic or gases, and the
temperature. Other than that, by including the function with sensor and communication units
also, enable the RCC to gain information and monitor the data regarding to the safety of the
user.
Material of Intelligent PPE Safety Suit
1. Materials for Protection Against Heat, Flame, and Chemicals
 The jacket has two layers where for the outside layer is made from a fire resistant
material and to keep the firefighter dry, the inner layer is made from waterproof
material.
 The stripe on suit is a reflective stripe that allows the firefighters to be seen in the dark.
 based on six synthetic fibers such as Nomex, Kevlar , PBI , Basofil, Zylon, and PI where
all of these synthetic fibers is a heat resistant
 In terms of protective gloves, major issues are related to questions of dexterity, comfort
and grip in the various environmental conditions encountered by firefighters
 Materials for chemical protection include activated carbon sprayed on polyethylene
nonwovens for heat stress reduction
 Sol-gel derived carbon xerogel coated on cotton and plasma-treated polypropylene
fabrics are also proposed for protection against volatile organic compounds
 selective blocking of toxic chemicals, chemical destruction of toxic materials that contact
the fabric and detection of hazardous agents.
