Learning Objective
5.16 The student will
a) describe mean, median, and mode as measures of center;
Content

b) describe mean as fair share;

c) find the mean, median, mode, and range of a set of data; and
d) describe the range of a set of data as a measure of variation.
Activity
The lesson objective will involve introducing and preforming the math
functions of mean, median, mode, and range. We will be using the
SMART board for the lesson. The first slide, we will be looking at the
Mean. I will explain that the mean is the average or “fair share” and
how we determine the number. We will do the example as a class,
after, I will click the more practice star and have the students
complete the 3 examples using their own notebook. I will have three
students tell me their answers and then have one come and “drop
down” the box for the answers to be revealed. Next, we will move on
to Median, middle number. We will do the first example all together,
and then move to the examples. It will be imperative to discuss that
with even set numbers, the two middle numbers will be used to
subtract each other to determine the median. The next page has 4
examples of sets to determine the median. I will have each student
complete in their notebooks, and then have 4 come up and “drag and
drop” the correct answers to the sets. Moving on to Mode, the most.
We will again do the example together and then each student will do
the examples. A new set of students will be asked to come to the
board to drag the correct answer to the checker tool. Our final math
function is range. The range is a measure of variation, we will do the
example, and then check our answers. The students will then
complete the examples in their notebook, and a different set of
students will come and select the correct multiple-choice answer.
After the lesson on SMART board, I would finish out the lesson with a
few more examples, write a set on the board and have the students
complete the 4 math functions. Example of a set include [20, 14, 11,
14, 22, 26], the students will solve for the four new functions. While
still utilizing the technology, the students can come up individually
and write their work/answers using the pen feature. Math is about
practice, and using the SMART board, will allow students to practice

this new skill while using the fun, interactive board.
