David Johnson knew he wanted to be a doctor and now he
is being rewarded for his achievements both in his career and involvement in the Burlington community. The E. Harvey Estes M.D. Physician Community Service Award is given annually to one physician licensed in North Carolina and Dr. Johnson is this year’s recipient. “I haven’t really had a lot of time to digest this award,” Johnson said “It’s really a humbling honor.” Johnson, who plans to retire in January, has been working for Burlington Pediatrics for 38 years and says his biggest accomplishment is working in one place for so long. “I’ve been able to practice pediatric medicine in one town, one office for so long…the impact I’ve had on children and now I’m seeing their children. I’m on my second generation of kids and that is gratifying,” said Johnson. Among his achievements in his career, he has also had some setback with his health. In 2006, Johnson has two back surgeries, one putting him out of practice for almost a year. “I was very blessed, I had good doctors, good therapists and very good support from my partners to get back.” Although he has been successful in his career, Johnson also works hard for the community. He has been on the Chamber of Commerce, a board member of United Way of Alamance County, a YMCA board member, an affiliate professor for Elon University School of Physician Assistants and served in other non-profit organizations. Being involved in these organizations has helped him be aware of all the needs, resources and opportunities in the community and also gives him the opportunity to be a voice for children. “Our medical practice is only as strong as our community,” Johnson said. “I feel a personal responsibility to give back my time, talent and finances to the community.” Johnson has enjoyed all his work in the community but his favorite thing to do is teach the students who come to him from Elon. “One on one teaching hands on, you are going to learn pediatrics when you spend six weeks with me,” Johnson said with a grin. Balancing his career, community involvement and life has been a challenge for Johnson but he has a personal commitment to strengthening the community. “You have to have support and understanding from your family and your partners because it does take away from your family, it does take away from your career.” Among the multiple awards hanging in his office, none have made him feel quite like winning this award has. “I thank the community for the support they have given Burlington Pediatrics, it’s been very humbling…I’m very appreciative,” Johnson said.
