Away we Go

Aim: to revise Present Continuous for the Future

Level: A2 / Pre-intermediate and above

Lesson Plan:

1. Play the video without sound. Ask Ss to imagine who the people are and what the
conversation is about.

2. Play again, with the sound on, to verify Ss’ ideas.

3. Dictate / Put on the board the following questions:

1. When are they leaving?

2. Where are they going?
3. How far are they moving?

See if Ss remember the answers. If not, play the video again to check.

4. Play the video one more time and ask Ss to fill in the gaps:

Glenda: OK. We have news.

Jim: It’s big.
Burt: What is it?
Glenda: ................................................ in June.
Jim: ................ finally ....................... it.
Burt: ................................. in June? The baby’s due in July.
Jim: Right. To Antwerp. City of Light.
Burt: That’s not--. No, .............................
Jim: ........................... It’s going to be superb.
Burt: Don’t say that word.
Glenda: We thought you’d be proud of us. We’ve been talking about this for fifteen years and
now we can finally do it.
Burt: ................................. a month before the baby’s born? ................................. 3000 miles
away from your grandchild?
Glenda: It’s more than 3000 miles, isn’t it, Jim?
Jim: I think so.

Play again if necessary. Ask Ss to check in pairs; whole class feedback next.

5. Grammar analysis:

Provide more examples of affirmative sentences, negations and questions.

Elicit as much as you can about Present Continuous for the Future from your Ss.
Add any necessary information you do not elicit from your Ss.

6. Controlled grammar practice:

Follow-up with exercises from your coursebook or grammar book you normally use.

7. Speaking practice:
In pairs, Ss talk about their plans for the near future, e.g.:
A: What are you doing on Sunday?
B: I’m having dinner with my in-laws.
