1 Low pressure Compressed Air System

1.1.1.1 General
Low pressure compressed air will be produced by two motor driven compressors, one always
operating as the main compressor and other as standby compressor. The compressors deliver
the air to a main air receiver of 5 m3 capacity. The compressors and the main air receiver will be
located at ------ floor. From there, air will be distributed to various consumption points in the power
house via a network of steel pipes namely:

To two air accumulators supplying the mechanical generator brakes and inflatable shaft seals,
located on the generator floor in the vicinity of units

To the following tapping points for supply of service air:

- Two tapping points at erection bay

- Two tapping points at transformer yard in switchyard

- Two tapping point at D/T gallery service floor

- One tapping points per unit at the machine hall floor

- One tapping points per unit at the generator floor

- One tapping points per unit at turbine floor

- Two tapping points at cooling water floor

- Two tapping points at Inlet Valve floor

- One tapping point at each floor in Aux. Bay

- Two tapping points in workshop

- Two tapping points in DG room

- Two tapping points at draft tube deck

The low pressure compressed air system will be designed for automatic operation with
the possibility of local manual control of individual compressors from local control panel installed
in the vicinity of compressors. In the automatic mode the compressors will respond automatically
to pressure fluctuation in the main air receiver. An automatic changeover will be initiated in case
of failure of the operating compressor.

2 Mechanical Equipment in Power House

2.1 General Description
The following are the prime mechanical equipment in the power house:
 Cooling Water System
 Drainage and Dewatering System
 Compressed air system
 EOT crane for power house
 Air Condition and Ventilation System
 Elevator
 Fire Protection System
 Pressure Oil and Oil Purification System

2.1.1 Cooling water system

2.1.1.1 General
The water requirements for cooling water system are proposed to be met by tapping penstock of
each unit. The tapped water from penstock shall be available at a pressure 17 – 18 bar. This
pressure is not suitable for cooling water system so separate pressure reducing valve have to
installed, but for fire protection as well as for high velocity water spray system for fire
protection of Transformers, pressure is suitable. Therefore penstock tapping is proposed to be
provided to meet the cooling water requirement as well as fire protection requirements.
Accordingly penstock tapping pipe shall be of adequate size so as meet the water requirements
of both cooling water system as well as fire protection system. Separate tapping branches will
be provided in the main penstock tapping pipe. Similar penstock tapping arrangement will be
provided in both the units. The branch tapping pipes of both the units shall connected to respective
headers.

The cooling water system will be designed to meet the water requirements of the
following equipment in the power house:
- Generator air coolers
- Turbine and generator bearing coolers
- Governor oil coolers
- Shaft seal
- Transformer oil coolers
The cooling water system will be designed for local and remote automatic operation with the
possibility of local manual control of individual components from local control board located on
the turbine / auxiliary floor near to the cooling water equipment.

Each generating unit and transformer is to be provided with a fully autonomous and separate
cooling water system. The cooling system will preferably be twin circuit cooling water system
equipped with primary & secondary cooling water circuits comprising of pumps, strainers,
plate type heat exchangers for heat transfer between the primary & secondary circuits.
