The November Edition

Happy Fall Everyone!! We are so THANKFUL for the students and families that we
are blessed to work with at Lincoln Heights Elementary School.
In mid-October, we administered the 1st 9 Week Benchmark assessments for grades
2nd-5th. Our results were positive, and we are extremely proud of our students. Grade
cards were sent home in October and we held Parent-Teacher Conferences. Thank
you to our parents who were able to attend. We value our partnership with you to
further your child’s academic achievement. Our students are making great strides
towards academic success, and we are overjoyed with their hard work.
We have many exciting events planned during the month of November. 1st, 2nd, and
5th grade students will be participating in programs and our basketball season begins.
We are excited about these upcoming events and look forward to seeing you support
our students.

News from the Office

Please remember that early dismissals are also considered unexcused tardies. If you sign
your child out prior to 2:45, and a medical, funeral, or legal note is not provided, that will be
considered an "unexcused early dismissal". Please try to refrain from signing your child out
early, unless there is a valid excuse. Anytime your child is not in class, he/she loses
valuable instruction time. Thank you for your cooperation, and please contact Ms. Lathim if
you have any questions.
News From the Nurse
Parents as we enter this flu season please be sure to consider getting the flu vaccine for
your family. If your child does becomes sick please don't send them to school until they are
fever free without Tylenol for 24 hours! Please stress good hand washing practices! This
is the number 1 way to prevent the spread of illness! Let's All do our part to have a happy
and healthy Fall season!

Please make sure that your child’s name is written inside their
jackets, book sacks, lunchboxes, or any other personal item.

The Classroom Corner

Pre-Kindergarten
PreK has been busy this month learning about our community. We enjoyed learning about how
a garbage collection truck works. Thanks to Mr. Sampson and his partner Chris for coming to
visit our class. Dr. Janet Dalton came and shared about her work with the Appalachian Bear
Rescue. We enjoyed a story about bears and learning about them. During the month of
October we visited Walter State College and Echo Valley Corn Maze. We had exciting and
fun learning experiences on both Field Trips. Last Friday we enjoyed a glow-stick party in the
gym…it was LOTS OF FUN! In November, we are looking forward to learning about animals!

Kindergarten
If your child has not mastered all letters and sounds, please work with your child at home.
Please work with your child on numbers 1-10. Your child should have mastered at least 50 sight
words. If not, please work on sight words with your child. Please remember to read with your
child every day. Information about Fall Parties will be sent home soon.

First Grade
Happy Fall! We had a beautiful fall day to visit Rocky Mount and learned more about "days of
long ago"! Every student was able to take something home, which was so exciting! In
November, we will be learning some cool ways to add 3 numbers together and before long will
be adding larger numbers! Math is so fun, and we use it everyday! We are working hard to
become better readers, as well. This month we will be reading more about how plants grow,
Veterans' Day, and our wonderful state of Tennessee. Please continue to read at home with
your child! It's so important! Thank you for your support!

Second Grade
Practice math facts and read fluency passage daily. On November 19, we will take a field trip
to Carson-Newman to see The Jungle Book play. Will be sending home permission slips next
week.
The Classroom Corner
Third Grade
You may have noticed we are on a regular schedule of math homework. Homework is given
to students on Monday and is due by Thursday. Giving the students a window of time to
complete serves more than one purpose: 1. No need to rush through the assignment 2.
Planning your time is a life-long skill 3. Allows for productive struggle and getting help. The
format of the front page of the homework helps to prepare the student for 3rd Grade
expectations. The back page is to work on fact memorization. Please continue to work with
your child on the critical skill of memorizing multiplication facts. Having this foundation will
be extremely beneficial the remainder of their math career. Reading is one of the most
fundamental skills children need to learn to be successful. Not only do good reading skills
benefit students academically they are also a skill required for lifetime success. Reading
develops vocabulary, increases attention span, and promotes stronger analytical thinking.
3rd graders should be reading at least 10 minutes every day for homework.

Fourth Grade
In Social Studies, we will be studying the American Revolution and the birth of our country.
In Science, we will studying Force and Motion and how things move. In Math, they are
working on multiplying and dividing by single and multiple divisors. We have a field trip
planned for Nov. 19th to Carson Newman for a Play.

Fifth Grade
Fifth grade had a great time learning about financial responsibility as we traveled to
BizTown. Students worked hard to earn their wages, and then worked even harder
spending them. Our next adventure will be on November 20, as we head to Greeneville to
hear the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra perform. Reading stories are being sent home each
night. Please make sure to ask your child questions about the story to make sure they
understand it. They should be writing in the margins, taking notes, looking up words they
don't understand. Please make sure your students are working on their multiplication facts!!
If you have not yet had a conference with your child's teacher, you will be receiving a call
soon.
EL Update
This month, ELL students are reviewing letter sounds and word patterns. In addition, we
are reviewing and learning lots of new vocabulary words!

Miss Troutman’s Class

Miss Troutman's class participated in the Bowling Special Olympics on October 25th. Miss
Troutman had 3 students that were old enough to participate and all 3 students received a
ribbon. Leah Baker placed first, Zach Chandler placed 3rd, and Dylan placed 4th in their
divisions. "The mission of Special Olympics is to provide year-round sports training and
athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with
intellectual disabilities. This gives them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness,
demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and
friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community." - Special
Olympics

School Counseling/Guidance
During the month of November, your child will be working on growth mindset and gratitude. We
will be doing art projects to send to local hospitals to show our gratitude to the patients. As
always any student is able to come to me for any reason. Please feel free to call the school or
have your child stop by my office if they need something. Some students will be coming home with
permission forms for small groups that I will be working on in the near future. If your child brings
a permission form home, please send it back (even if you do not want your child to participate).

Music
5th Grade will be doing a Veteran's Day program on November 9th. We would like to invite all
Veterans to attend the program and be recognized and honored for your sacrifices. Also, 1st and
2nd grade students are starting their concert rehearsals. They will be working on their
Thanksgiving concert all month. Some students will receive speaking parts. Please watch for notes
coming home with your child to see if your child received a speaking part. If they did receive a
part, please make sure you are working with them on the part daily.

Library
Please remember to have your child return their Library books on the day they have Library.
Make sure you are keeping them safe at home. We are in the process of releveling the library and
some books may not be able to check out. If your child comes home and tells you they were not
allowed to check out a book, this could be the reason. The releveling process will be finished soon
and all sections will be back open to your child.
