Objectives
Using “White Chirstmas”, students will discuss how to play a piece of music in a
“sentimental” style.
Students will test ideas they come up with during large rehearsal.
Procedure
Play through White Christmas
Teacher shares about sentimental songs to him and what makes them sentimental
o “Let’s go Fly a kite”
Invite students to share about their sentimental songs
“What makes them sentimental”
o There is usually something in life going on that a song distracts from.
“What makes the song distracting from life?”
o It is played at an extremely high level. It is simple and surprising.
“How can we make that happen in White Christmas?”
o Take student ideas and rehearse a small section with that in mind
Play piece again with a story or thought in mind that makes you feel sentimental.
Assessment
Did students participate in discussion?
How did the new ideas impact how the piece was played?
Did students take themselves to a “sentimental place”?
