Steering gear, removing

- Disconnect battery

- Remove foot well trim, to do so remove nuts - arrows -

.

- Remove bolt - 1 - and pull universal joint - 2 - off

steering gear.

- Remove front wheels.

- Loosen tie rod end nut, but do not remove yet.

Caution!

To protect ball joint thread, screw nut on a few turns to

pin.

- Press off tie rod end from wheel bearing housing with ball
joint puller 3287A and then remove nut.

- Remove lower noise insulation

Repair Manual, Body Exterior, Repair Group 50,

- Remove coupling rods from stabilizer bar.

- Remove bolts - arrows - .

- Remove pendulum support from transmission, to do so

remove bolts - 14 - .

- Remove bracket for exhaust system from subframe.

Vehicles with front wheel drive

- Remove bolts - arrows - from heat shield.

- Remove heat shield from subframe.

- Remove steering gear and stabilizer bar screws - 3, 6, 11

and 16 - .

- Secure subframe and consoles 40-4, Subframe and

consoles, securing .

- Place engine/transmission jack V.A.G 1383 A below

subframe .

- Place, for example, a piece of wood - 1 - between

engine/transmission jack V.A.G 1383 A and subframe.

- Remove bolts - 4 and 5 - , slightly lower subframe with

consoles. Observe electrical wires.

- Remove heat shield - 1 - above steering gear.

- Remove bolts - arrows - .

- Remove cable guide from subframe - arrow - .

- Unclip all other cable securing points on steering gear.

- Disconnect all electrical connections from steering gear.

- Carefully lower subframe using engine/transmission jack

V.A.G 1383 A .

- Lift steering gear down from subframe.

- Lay steering gear aside as depicted in illustration.

This avoids damages on control module - 1 - .

Steering gear, installing

Further installation is in reverse order of removal.

Threaded sleeves of steering gear must be seated in holes

of consoles.

Note:

„ Coat seal on steering gear using lubricant, e.g.

lubricating soap, before installing steering gear.

„ After attaching steering gear to universal joint, make

sure that seal on steering gear is positioned to
mounting plate without kinks and opening to foot well
is sealed correctly. Ingress of water and/or noises
may be the result.

„ Make sure sealing surfaces are clean.

Before attaching bolts for subframe, position steering gear

on subframe and attach bolts for steering gear and
stabilizer bar.

- Remove lower noise insulation

After installation, position of steering wheel must be

checked with a road test.

If steering wheel is crooked or new steering gear was

installed, vehicle alignment must be performed.

- Perform vehicle alignment 44-6, Wheel alignment .

If new steering gear was installed, Power Steering Control

Module J500 must be adapted using Vehicle Diagnosis,
Testing and Information System VAS 5051 .

- Perform basic setting for Power Steering Control Module
