Lesson Plan
Multicultural is not just relating to or constituting several cultural but also ethnic groups
within a society. So I wanted to make my lesson plan based on ethnic groups and sign language
came to mind. I also find sign language very fascinating and would love to someday teach it to
my students
Lesson Plan Title:
Language of the World
Grade Level: Prekinder, Kindergarten
Topic: Sign Language, Equal Rights, Respect
Goal of the Lesson:
The goal of the lesson is to get student to value each other not isolating due to their skin
color, gender, culture or disability. (society groups)
Concept / Topic To Teach:
Sign Language
General Goal(s):
★ Students will be able to sign “hello, Goodbye, Thank you, and R for restroom” by
the end of the Sign Language week.
★ Students will be proactive and continue to use the skill outside of the classroom.
★ Students will respect others that are not like them.
Specific Objectives:
Students will be able to use their Sign Language to greet one another and to be able to use
the restroom, to gain practice.
Required Materials:
● Teacher
● Students
● Sign Language guide book
● Pictures of hand signing
● Copy to take home and practice
● Book ““The Skin You Live In” by David Lee Csicsko
Anticipatory Set (Lead-In):
Circle time where we will read the book “The Skin You Live In” by David Lee Csicsko.
This book will helps the students see that no matter their skin color they are all equally respected.
This will also lead use to talk about all the different things in the book. We will talk about
gender, skin color and Culture.
Step-By-Step Procedures:
1. As soon as the students walk in i will greet them using sign language. I will not use my
voice at all until we are all gathered around the circles time area.
2. Once at the rug, I will then greet them using my voice and tell them what I was dong is
talking to them but they did not understand.

3. I will announce the great idea that by the end of the week they will be able to signe hello
goodbye and restroom.
a. Student will be given the task to uses their skill into practice when wanting to go
use the bathroom and greeting one another.
4. We will spend time on the rug discussing they different reason why sign language was
created.
5. We will also discuss that sign language is used all around the world and it is a considered
a language like English, Spanish, etc. I will then bring out the picture with sign language
to show them a imagine.
a. Then I will ask them to look at their hand and copy the picture I will show them.
i. For example you can sign restroom
6. Once they are profession in doing the sign language I will ask them to practice it with
their peers.
7. Once they have practice I will ask them opened ended questions.
a. Can you tell me why sign language is used?
b. Who can used sign language?
c. Where is sign language used?
d. What color do your hands have to be when signiting?
e. Why should we respect each others language and culture?
8. After the questions are answered I will move on to another activity where the students get
to see sign language being used in a real life scenario.

9. After the video is over I will again state that not matter if someone is different we should
all respect each other equally.
Closure (Reflect Anticipatory Set):
I will close the lesson by showing a video of how sign language is actually used all
around the world. Once the video is over I will ask open ended questions to see if the students
understood the lesson and the value behind it.

b. This activity is used to promote students to be creative when creating their person.
The teacher will provide face cut outs that are multicultural colors paper. Like
brown, peach, pink, white etc. This pages are laminated to be able to use over and
over. The students will then be given the freedom to pick their persons hair color,
eye color by using play dough. The student will have full independence in pick
and create their unique person. The activity was a way to show the students that
everyone looks different but everyone is special in their own way.

b. The lesson plan is a lesson plan that helps student truly understand where their
family comes from. It can be a way to build self-esteem in every student as they
share "My Family Heritage" to their classmates. It can also be used to celebrate
the differences in people and build tolerance of those who are different. Studying
heritage in the early childhood classroom can get families involved. Great way to
welcome families to be a bigger part of the classroom environment.

6. Scholastic: What is your Language?
a. Preschool- 12th grade
b. This lesson plan is very easy to adapt to many units in a lesson plan. The lesson
plan is all based on the book. The book has a great meaning behind it for a
discussion that can gets students learning from one another. They will feel like if
they begin a larger exploration of the many cultures of the world by just hearing
their classmates language experience.

7. Kinder Art: Handprint RainBow
a. Preschool- 2nd grade
b. This lesson plan was designed to show students that everyone is different and by
just seeing their classmates hang print and chose in color can be proven. Student
will put their hands in paint and print on long butcher paper to create a rainbow.
Children will see that every hand print is different as they work together on a
cooperative art project.The activity will help the student see that even if they see
the different doesn't make make the student less.

8. A-Z Reading: Friends Around the World
a. 1st grade- 3rd grade
b. This lesson plan was designed to be off the book everything relating to the book
“Friends Around the World” . The lesson plan helps student avance with the
phonic skill and learn what children like them are doing around the world. The
lesson begins with the student learning and breaking down vocabulary that will be
used in the book. At the end student will have a discussion on what their friends
do around the world, helping them recall the story.

9. Teacher Pay Teachers: Multicultural Lesson Plan in Science
a. 7th grade - 12th grade
b. This lesson plan was designed for the older grades level because it a bit more
challenging. This lesson plan needs more individual research. The activity was
made to get student more profession in research done on their own or small
groups. Students enjoy learning that includes a visual medium/stimulus, social
contact and hands-on experiences. Student get a bit of taste of the past. Were
gender and culture did not matter because that person did something great not
caring of their differences.

10. Kinder Art: Box of Crayons
a. Kindergarten - 5th grade
b. The activity is all based on the book "The Crayon Box That Talked" . This lesson
will show children that when they all work together, the results are much better.
Everyone's work makes it more interesting and colorful.Teacher will provide a cut
out of a crayon where the student can color a decorate to their choose. When
everyone is done with their artwork it will be put together make it look like a
crayon box. Student will learn how to work together and respect each others
choose because the outcome will be great.
