MY PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT PLAN

5-Year Plan

PD Goal 1: Travel abroad to work or at least spend personal time researching the higher
education climate in other countries. This is a personal goal meant to broaden my horizons on
higher education. I believe understand how other systems work and the different types of
cultures that come with different regions will give me a great platform to build from when
approaching how I will function as a faculty/staff member.

Action Steps: Research possible abroad programs that can easily get me to a region, something
similar to teach abroad programs that are advertised. From there, assess my options and take the
leap.

Competency Area: VPH

PD Goal 2: I want to sharpen my skills and knowledge on polices and certain laws and
regulations we deal with daily in higher education. Such as Title IX and I even came across
HIPPA laws in my internship experience.

Action Steps: Create myself a poster of sorts that outline the specific laws in my own words.
Next step is to laminate it and post in where ever I work or in my office space. This will force me
to at least look at these laws daily so I am familiar with them, or at least have the explanations
available to me.

Competency Area: LPG

PD Goal 3: I want to challenge myself to be more open and knowledgeable about the student
population at any campus I apply to in the future. From having talks with higher education
professionals I find a common point that is brought up is always diversity and how we interact
with it and what it actually is. To work in such a people centered profession, we cannot became
complacent with prior knowledge or what we see on television to shape our opinions and
thoughts on certain topics and even people. As a constant victim of such stereotypical practices
by older people, I want to be the change I want to see and lead by example.

Action Steps: Converse with student populations about such topics, gain a better understand of
the cultures I will work with heavily and even the ones I won’t work with as closely just to cover
all bases. Put the gained understand to practice and create a welcoming environment that will be
my office or work space.

Competency Area: OHR

PD Goal 4: Social Justice has always been a sensitive topic for me. I am one hundred percent
aware of my history as a black man in America. I am also very aware of the political climate here
in the United States not only today but how it’s always been. I am not naïve and I do not stand by
and watch things happen I disagree with. I support student’s right to protest and voice their
opinions and will always have an open door for these concerns to be voiced if I have the time
and ability to listen to them.

Action Steps: Remain true to who I am and never forget where I came from and what it took for
me to get to this position I am in today. I will continue to preach to always reach back and help
your brothers and sisters achieve if you have the ability to.

Competency Area: SJI

PD Goal 5: Student development theories are the backbone to our career path. Understanding
these (in my opinion) very bias and outdated theories is very important to succeeding in higher
education. After speaking with my mentor, I’ve been informed it’s usually an interview question
to be prepared for. Taking this information and digesting it leads me to this point; student
development theories are important, and I should learn them and keep them fresh in my memory
banks for the years to come in this field.

Action Steps: Same as my approach to Title IX, summarize them in my own words and create
myself a cheat sheet of sorts to post in my work place for my own benefit. Seeing these everyday
will force me to at least glance at them and eventually read them multiple times to keep them
fresh and help me apply them to my future students for better assessing their needs.
