I~TRODUCTION
The purpose of t h i s s u r v e y w a s t o - d e t e r m i n e t h e f e a s i b i l i t y of c o n v e r t i n g
t h e e x i s t i n g n a t u r a l g a s b u r n e r s of t h e proposed i n d u s t r i a l f u e l gas: (IFG)
customers t o u s e IFG. To do t h i s , a d d i t i o n a l d e t a i l e d i n f o r m a t i o n was
o b t a i n e d f o r e a c h , b u r n e r i n s t a l l a t i o n , and l e t t e r s were s e n t t o t h e manufac-
t u r e r s g i v i n g t h e p r o p e r t i e s of t h e IFG a n d ' r e q u e s t i n g t h e m a n u f a c t u r e r s '
recommendations r e g a r d i n g t h e , f e a s i b i l i t y of f i r i n g IFG and any m o d i f i c a t i o n s
necessary.

DISCUSSION

E i g h t - s i x . b u r n e r i n s t a l l a t i o n s were i d e n t i f i e d among t h e 22 customers


surveyed. Table 1 i s a l i s t .of t h e 24 p r o s p e c t i v e customers. A s noted,
D e l t a R e f i n i n g and Buckeye Ce:llulose were n o t i n c l u d e d because D e l t a h a s been
d i r e c t l y i n c o n t a c t w i t h t h e i r . b u r n e r m a n u f a c t u r e r s and Buckeye h a s been
t h e s u b j e c t of a s e p a r a t e p r e v i o u s s t u d y . .

Combustion Energy S e r v i c e s , I n c . , (CES) of Memphis, Tennessee; was sub'-


c0ntracte.d t o conduct t h e d e t a i l e d , o n - s i t e survey because t h e y were v e r y
f a m i l i a r w i t h many of t h e i n s t a l l a t i o n s . Table 2 i s a sample of t h e i n f o r -
mation o b t a i n e d f o r one of t h e b u r n e r i n s t a l l a t i o n s . Appendix A l i s t s a l l
of t h e i n f o r m a t i o n o b t a i n e d .

The 86 burner i n s t a l l a t i o n s i d e n t i f i e d were r e p r e s e n t e d by 19 manufac-


turers. These m a n u f a c t u r e r s a r e l i s t e d i n Table 3 . The m a n u f a c t u r e r s were
s e n t a l e t t e r d e s c r i b i n g t h e combustion p r o p e r t i e s of t h e IFG and r e q u e s t i n g
t h e i r recommendations. A copy of t h e l e t t e r s e n t t o t h e m a n u f a c t u r e r s
i s i n c l u d e d a s Appendix B.

Twelve of t h e m a n u f a c t u r e r s responded t o t h e l e t t e r . Those companies


r e s p o n d i n g corresponded t o 7 9 of t h e 86 i n s t a l l a t i o n s , o r b e t t e r t h a n 90%
response. The l e t t e r s of r e s p o n s e a r e i n c 1 u d c d . a ~Appendix C. Those n o t
r e s p o n d i n g have been asked t o send draw5ngs of t h e b u r n e r s t o s e e i f t h e i r
d e s i g n s a r e s i m i l a r t o t h o s e of companies t h a t have responded o r s i m i l a r t o
t h o s e s t u d i e d i n - o t h e r I n s t i t u t e of Gas Technology (IGT) t e s t s .

Of t h o s e responding, most of t h e m a n u f a c t u r e r s recommended t h a t e i t h e r


t h e b u r n e r s could a t p r e s e n t be f i r e d w i t h 'IFG o r o n l y minor m o d i f i c a t i o n s
would b e r e q u i r e d t o u s e IFG. I n . a l l c a s e s , t h e m o d i f i c a t i o n s involved
e n l a r g i n g t h e f u e l o r i f i c e s t o a l l o w f o r t h e i n c r e a s e d volumes of f u e l
required.

Two l a r g e b o i l e r m a n u f a c t u r e r s , Combustion E n g i n e e r i n g , I n c . , and Babcock


and Wilcox, I n c ., (B&W) would n o t , comment w i t h o u t conducting a n e n g i n e e r i n g
study. Such a s t u d y was done by B&W a t Memphis L i g h t , Gas and Water's (MLGW'S)
r e q u e s t f o r one of t h e b o i l e r s a t Buckeye C e l l u l o s e . The r e s u l t s of t h i s
s t u d y recommended t h a t t h e b o i l e r would o p e r a t e ~ a ~ t i s f a c t o r i b
l yu t t h a t
b u r n e r m o d i f i c a t i o n s would have t o b e made. During t h e same p e r i o d a s t h e ,

Baker-Perkins, Maxon, and North American Manufacturing f e l t t h a t some of


t h e i r b u r n e r s i n s t a l l e d i n t h e companies i n c l u d e d i n t h e survey could n o t b e
converted t o burn t h e IFG. Each of t h e s e companies f e l t t h a t t h e y , , c o u l d .
recommend a l t e r n a t i v e equipment t h a t could b e s u c c e s s f u l l y u t i l i z e d . North.

CONCLUSIONS

T h i s s t u d y was l i m i t e d t o a n a n a l y s i s o f t h e f e a s i b i l i t y o f b u r n i n g t h e
IFG , i n t h e e x i s t i n g b u r n e r s a n d combustion chambers among a g r o u p of p r o s p e c t i v e
IFG c u s t o m e r s . The r e s u l t s of t h i s s t u d y i n d i c a t e t h a t t h e g r e a t m a j o r i t y . o f
b u r n e r and equipment m a n u f a c t u r e r s recommend t h a t t h e IPG c a n b e u t i l i z e d w i t h
t h e i r equipment. ' T h i s i s e s p e c i a l l y t r u e w i t h t h e b o i l e r s which make up t h e
l a r g e s t p a r t of t h e l o a d 'among t h e p o t e n t i a l u s e r s of t h e ' IFG. A s m a l l .number
of b u r n e r s . r e p r e s e n t i n g a s m a l l p a r t ' o f t h e t o t a l p o t e n t i a l l o a d . w i l l p r o b a b l y
have t o b e r e p l a c e d .

T h i s s t u d y d i d n o t a d d r e s s t h e c h a n g e s t h a t would b e r e q u i r e d w i t h r e s p e c t
t o t h e f u e l d i s t r i b u t i o n p i p i n g w i t h i n each f a c i l i t y . At a minimum t h e
e x i s t i n g r e g u l a t o r s , flow meters,and c o n t r o l v a l v e s designed f o r t h e n a t u r a l
g a s f l o w r a t e s would h a v e t o b e r e p l a c e d t o accommodate t h e h i g h e r f u e l f l o w
r a t e s r e q u i r e d w i t h t h e IFG. I n many f a c i l i t i e s , t h e f u e l d i s t r i b u t i o n p i p i n g
would h a v e t o b e r e p l a c e d . No c h a n g e s , however, a r e r e q u i r e d f o r t h e
combustion a i r f a n s o r f l u e s and s t a c k s .

the burner, for the u s e of 275 BTU/Cu.Ft. fuel g a s .

We a r e relatively confident that the burner s y s t e m s a s supplied with the ' '

Cleaver-Brooks boilers listed on your attachment, will perform satisfactorily


with this IFG. It should be pointed out that the burner system includes a g a s . . .
ring containing a s e r i e s of drilled orifices to c a u s e uniform distribution of the
g a s around i t s periphery. These orifices r e s u l t in a pressure drop in the g a s
flow stream. The g a s stream a l s o flows through a piping and.contro1 manifold
which a l s o c a u s e s a head l o s s during g a s flow.

Since the g a s which is intended to be used h a s a lower heating content than


natural g a s , greater g a s flow will be required to achieve the required h e a t
input t o the boiler. Increased g a s flows will require substantially higher g a s
p r e s s u r e s , which c a n be calculated on the b a s i s of standard formulae. w h e n
s o , d o i n g , it must be remembered that the g a s burner pressure i s a composite
of furnace pressure plus orifice pressure drop. It is not expected that the fur-
n a c e pressure would r i s e a n appreciable amount a s a r e s u l t of the u s e of the
lower BTU content f u e l . Therefore, the burner pressure l i s t e d in your data
cannot be used a s is for your c a l c u l a t i o n s .

SUBJECT: MLGW PROJECT/MAXON BURNERS

Dear Mr. Abbasi:

Your letter of September 24th requested our recommendation regarding possible


modifications to burners that were originally designed f o r use with natural gas,
and would now be using an industrial fuel gas.

The Maxon VFH Burner installed at Cargill Inc. , 1877 Channel Ave. , would - not
be recomm.ended f o r use with the industrial fuel gas shown in Table I of your
specification sheet. The high hydrogen and carbon monoxide content of the gas
would cause i t to burn very rapidly and thereby tend to overheat the face of the
VFH Burner. We would recommend the VFH ~ u r h e be r replaced by our Series
"66" AL5 Burner which allows a slower combustion of the gas to take place.
The "6611 Burner is not a 100% premix type burner, such a s the VFH; rather i t
uses a progressive aeration pattern which allows a slower burning of the fuel.
Catalog literature on the SERIES lt661t~ u r n e is
r enclosed for your review.

Dear Mr. Abbasi:

This is inAregard to your September 24 letter about the DOE


experiment with Industrial Fuel'Gas at Memphis Light, Gas, and Water
Company. I am sorry that it has taken so long to get back to you
.on Lhis project. Attached is a photocopy of'a memo from our Mr. Ralph
Niemira, evaluating the chances of success with IFG to existing burners
at 5 installations in the Memphis area,

The answers are:


The 6795 burner at Quaker Oats will burn the IFG,
The 4988 at Quaker Oats will not burn the IFG.
All,others are questionable.

Concerning the 214-8B and 6514-8B burners at Beckman Lab and Humble-
Exxon, you will certainly want to remove the oil atomizers from the gas
tubes when burning IFG. Further, you need to determine if the 8, 14, and
16 osi gas pressures at the burners are really measured at the burner
inlet or upstream of the limiting'orifice valves. Also,are these gas
pressures the pressures the present pressures or the ones you anticipate
with the new fuel? I feel that you have people that can evaluate the
pressure losses through the regulators and gas train to answer the above
questions and that from Ralph ~iemira's explanation you can decide whether
a burner modification will be necessary.

I hope that with the above information relative to our evaluation


of the gas interchangeability on our burners, your IGT gas engineers can
make the rest of the necessary determinations.

Enclosed is a printout from our STOIC computer program, which provides


quite a bit of usG2ul information relative to the proposed Memphis IFG.

We h a v e reviewed t h e p r o p e r t i e s of t h e i n d u s t r i a l f u e l g a s and t h e
a p p l i c a t i o n of t h a t g a s t o t h e b u r n e r s m a n u f a c t u r e d by u s mentioned i n
y o u r above r e f e r e n c e d l e t t e r . We do f e e l t h a t t h e IFG g a s c a n b e u s e d
on t h e e x i s t i n g b u r n e r s w i t h some m o d i f i c a t i o n s . The B a p t i s t H o s p i t a l ,
M e t h o d i s t H o s p i t a l , and St.. J o s e p h H o s p i t a l a l l h a v e "RD" t y p e b u r n e r s ,
which a r e a h i g h p r e s s u r e g a s gun t y p e of b u r n e r . To u s e t h e s e b u r n e r s
w i t h o u t m o d i f i c a t i o n t h e e x i s t i n g o p e r a t i n g g a s gun p r e s s u r e f o r n a t u r a l
g a s would h a v e t o b e m u l t i p l i e d by a p p r o x i m a t e l y 1 1 . 2 , i n o r d e r t o o b t a i n
t h e e q u i v a l e n t BTU f l o w r a t e of n a t u r a l g a s . For o p e r a t i n g r e a s o n s , we do
n o t recommend i n c r e a s i n g t h e o r i f i c e p r e s s u r e by t h a t l a r g e of a m u l t i p l i e r .
I n l i e u of t h e a b o v e , we would recommend t h a t t h e g a s gun t i p s b e r e p l a c e d
w i t h new t i p s w i t h o r i f i c e s s i z e d t o o b t a i n t h e same e q u i v a l e n t BTU f l o w
r a t e a t a p p r o x i m a t e l y t h e same p r e s s u r e o r i g i n a l l y used f o r n a t u r a l g a s .
I n a d d i t i o n t o t h e above, t h e r e a r e p o s s i b i l i t i e s t h a t t h e e x i s t i n g c o n t r o l
t r a i n s i z e s may need t o b e examined f o r e x c e s s i v e p r e s s u r e l o s s w i t h t h e
i n c r e a s e i n f l o w volume.

The j o b l o c a t i o n d e s c r i b e d a s Humko S h e f f i e l d h a s HCL model b u r n e r s . T h i s


s t y l e and model of b u r n e r s a r e no l o n g e r m a n u f a c t u r e d and a r e o b s o l e t e . Since
p a r t s a r e no l o n g e r a v a i l a b l e f o r t h i s l i n e of b u r n e r s , we would h i g h l y recommend
t h a t t h i s equipment b e r e p l a c e d w i t h modern up-to-date equipment s i z e d and
d e s i g n e d t o f i r e . t h e IFG. However, a s on t h e RD b u r n e r s , t h e o r i f i c e p r e s s u r e s
would have t o b e i n c r e a s e d by a m u l t i p l i e r o f 11.2 o r t h e e x i s t i n g o r i f i c e
arrangement r e s i z e d t o o b t a i n t h e BTU f l o w r a t e a t a l o w e r p r e s s u r e . A l s o , t h e
g a s c o n t r o l t r a i n s would need t o b e examined f o r e x c e s s i v e p r e s s u r e l o s s .

F o r a l l b u r n e r s you r e f e r e n c e d , % w i t h o n e e x c e p t i o n , t h e b u r n e r s w i l l
accommodate t h e IFG i f t h e c u s t o m e r w i l l r e p l a c e g a s t i p s w i t h new
t i p s d r i l l e d f o r IFG.

The o n e ' e x c e p t i o n i s o n Quaker O a t s G i r d l e r hydrogen u n i t . T h e s e


b u r n e r s w i l l r e q u i r e new g a s l i m i t i n g o r i f i c e s t o h a n d l e t h e IFG.

From o u r c a l c u l a t i o n s and t e s t f i r i n g o n s i m i l a r f u e l s , we f i n d
t h e f u e l p r e s s u r e r e q u i r e d o n IFG i s a p p r o x i m a t e l y 1 5 t i m e s t h e re-
q u i r e d n a t u r a l g a s f u e l p r e s s u r e f o r comparable h e a t r e l e a s e on
burners d r i l l e d f o r natural gas.

Such h i g h p r e s s u r e s would c a u s e s e v e r a l p r o b l e m s i n f i r i n g . The


most l i k e l y problems a r e burner i n s t a b i l i t y and extreme n o i s e
generation.

Such p r o b l e m s w i l l b e e l i m i n a t e d by r e p l a c i n g t h e g a s t i p s o n
burners.

W e a p p r e c i a t e t h e o p p o r t u n i t y t o h e l p you a n d t h e g a s c u s t o m e r s o n
projects l i k e these. I n t h i s way, we c a n e q u i p t h e b u r n e r ' s w i t h
