Big Ideas:
1. Music can be used to express and initiates aesthetic and physical responses.
Essential Question:
1. How can I express my thoughts, feelings and ideas through music and movement?
Objective:
1. The students will analyze different material that needs to be recycled through music and
movement

I. Planning and Preparation

A. I have eight kindergarten students, five of the eight children are girls, and the
other three students are boys. All of my students work really well together. Out of
all my students 4 of my students are social learners, which means that they learn
best when in groups, and the other four of my students are auditory learners,
which means they prefer sound music and rhythm when learning. One of my
students also has an IEP for ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder). I
plan on accommodating for this students by working in a whole group so my
social learners can benefit from this activity. This activity will also benefit my
auditory learners because the information that needs to be learned is made into a
song. For my student with ADHD I will make sure that I start by reviewing
previous lessons, i will set my learning expectations for the day, i will set my
behavioral expectations, state the materials needed, and make sure that i'm
instructions are clear and simplified.
B. In order to set clear standards of conduct and behavior management of the
student's behavior, I plan on laying out my expectations before we start the
activity. I will make sure the students are able to repeat back to me what my
expectations are before we even get started on the activity.
II. Classroom Environment
A. Some of the effective classroom routines that i have implemented into the
classroom are attention grabbers. In order to grab my students attention i would
start by saying loud and clear “1,2,3 eyes on me” my students all together then
would repeat back to me “1, 2, eyes on you” and when they do that their eyes
should be on me, their hands in their laps and their “bubbles” in their mouth.
Another thing that I do that is effective in my classroom is that i explain the
activities for the day, this benefits all m students because it makes transitioning to
the next activity easy because my students already know what it is that they are
going to be doing.
B. In order to identify what i will do to establish my expectations for my students
achievement, I will model the behavior that I expect. Not only will I model the
behavior but I plan on explaining my expectations and the objective is for the
lesson, before we even begin
III. Instruction
A. Materials Needed:
1. Large Post-it Note paper
2. Markers
3. Recycled material
a) Cans
b) Paper
c) Bottles
d) Plastic
4.
B. Motivation Activities/ Strategies:
1. The teacher will ask the students to differentiate the recycled material
2. The teacher will ask the students to separate the recycled material
C. Prior Knowledge Activities/ Strategies:
1. Throughout the week we will be discussing material that we recycle, we
will also talk about why we recycle and what it does to our environment
when we do/do not recycle. We will also discuss what happens when we
recycle and what happens to the material once it is recycled. We will read
several books on recycling and we will do several activities that also
incorporate recycling
D. Sequence of Lesson:
1. For this lesson we will work as a whole group
2. I will begin by stating my behavioral and academic expectations for the
students
3. I will then begin by introducing the theme.
4. “This week we are going to be talking about Recycling, raise your hand if
you know what recycling is? Does anyone Recycle at their house? What
types of things might you recycle?
5. After asking the students if they have prior knowledge of the subject
matter I will then go on to explain what our objectives are for the week.
6. “This week we are going to learn a lot about recycling, we are going to
learn why recycle, what happens to our recycled material, what we
recycle, and where we put our recyclables.”
7. I will then explain to the students that recycling is a process where you
take material that isn't waste and potential use that material for be
converted into something else.
8. After explaining what recycling means I will then introduce our first
activity.
9. “To get us started this week I am going to teach you a song, this song will
help you to remember what type of material it is that we are supposed to
recycle”
10. “Before we get started on our song there is four very important words that
we need to know
11. I will then show the list of vocabulary words to the students, then I will
recite each of those words.
12. “The words that we need to know are; cans, paper, bottles and plastic.
Why are these words so important?” As i read each of the words i will also
show an example of each of the material (i.e when talking about the cans
I would show a real life example of a soda can or a soup can)
13. I will then explain that those vocabulary words are words that i'll be found
within the song. I will also explain to the students that those four
vocabulary words are also four materials that can be recycled.
14. Once we have finished going over our vocabulary words we will then
begin our activity.
15. To begin I will introduce the song by saying the title.
16. The I will ask the students if they have ever heard of the song “row, row,
row your boat” because I will then explain to the students that the tune of
this song will be to “row, row, row your boat”.
17. I will then continue on with the song.
18. I will begin by telling the students that I will sing the first line then they will
echo singback to me. I will continue this process until the song is
complete
19. After the completion of the song, I will then ask the students to recall
what types of material it is that we are supposed to recycle.
20. I will then go back to our learning objectives for the week and see what
questions we are able to answer.
21. After that we will then move on to our formal assessment where the
students will be given a bunch of recyclables and they need to sort those
materials into the correct group.
E. Level of Learning/Assessment Evidence
1. I will know the students grasped the material if the students are able to tell
me the four different recycled materials we talked about in this lesson. I
will also know they have an understanding of recycling if they are able to
properly recycle the material into the correct area.
2. One example of an informal assessment is that I will go around the
classroom and have the students name something that can be recycled
and example of a formal assessment is that I will have the students sort
recyclable material into their correct groups.
F. Closure:
3. In order to bring this lesson to a close I will ask the students to tell me
what they learned in this lesson. They should be able to tell me that they
learned that cans, paper, bottles plastic are all recycled material. After this
lesson is completed we will then transition into our next lesson which will
then go further into our understanding of recycling.
