Learning Objective 4.7 The student will investigate and understand

The objective of the lesson is what
students will be able to do as they the organization of the solar system. Key concepts
finish the activity. For this objective,
use the Standards of Learning (SOL)

to say what you want to focus on.
You can find the SOLs at

instructor handing out a worksheet that has blank
moons the students can shade in as the lesson
continues. The page will also contain a diagram of
Earth’s revolution around the Sun and a diagram of the
planets around the sun. Both disagram are blank and
will be labeled later. As the instructor introduces the
phases of the moon, they will show a powerpoint slide
that briefly shows and explain the phases of the moon.
Next, the teacher will show a video that thoroughly
explains the phases of the moon. After teaching the
material, the students will complete the first diagram of
the phases of the moon in pencil. After everyone is
finished, volunteers will come and drag the names of
each lunar phase to the correct moon on the
SmartBoard. Afterwards, the teacher will check to see
if each one is correct and help the volunteers when
needed. After the phases of the moon are covered, the
teacher will move on to explain the difference between
a solar and lunar eclipse. They will have an
accompanying slide and video to help students
visualize. In addition to the slide and video, the teacher
will physically show the difference by turning off the
lights in the classroom and use a flashlight and tennis
ball to recreate a solar and lunar eclipse. Following the
lesson on eclipses, the teacher will then explain the
similarities between Earth and the Moon. afterwards,
the teacher will explain why the seasons occur. There
will be a diagram that shows the relationship between
Earth’s revolution and the seasons. Following the
diagram, there will be a short video about the seasons
as well. The last part of the lesson is dedicated to
learning about the planets. There will be a slide for
each planet that explains their surface, relation to the
Sun, and facts about the planet. Each slides has a
video to accompany them. The last part of the lesson
will require volunteers to come up and label the
planets in a diagram on the SmartBoard.
