63 “The colonial poet’s nostalgia accounts in part for the frequent prefer-
ence for the epic form… although there are many long poems in the nine-
teenth century that, strictly speaking, are not epic. Their intent, however,
evokes it. Their emphasis lies not so much in imitating the features of the
classical, medieval, Renaissance, and later forms of epic as in attempting to
emulate epic ethos… The epic ethos manifests itself in accordance with the
