Grade 8-A, Game KNB? A Tool Towards Understanding

Science Concepts among the Grade Eight Students of Tuod Integrated School

Part I. Situation/Scenario/Setting

Being a Grade VIII teacher handling Science VIII at Tuod Elementary School, I

could say most of the students find difficulty in understanding Science Concepts. During

the Teaching –Learning Process most of the students could read the text and listened to

the discussion, however during the test given (evaluation) many of them failed. This

scenario happening most of the time despite the preparation I’ve done could justify that

Science is a difficult subject. Therefore, there is a need to design strategies that could help

them understand the science concepts.

The first grading academic performance of grade eight section A students in this

school year in Science subject is lower compared to other subjects. This action research

aimed to help my grade eight students improve their ability to understand the science

concepts. Thus, a learning tool was designed to improve their understanding and elevate

their academic performance.

Part II. The Findings and Insights

The “Grade 8-A, Game KNB?”, is a learning tool which could help them. This

was patterned in the “Pilipinas, Game KNB?”, a famous ABS-CBN game show hosted

initially by Kris Aquino followed by Edu Manzano in the latter versions. In the Grade 8-

A, Game KNB?, the contestant needed to get three correct answers out of five correct

questions to get to the next round, and each round, the prize became higher. The player
also can change his initial answer until he/she replies “Sure na” when the host asks

him/her “Sure KNB?”

The “Game KNB?” version I adopted not only for understanding science concepts

but also helped the students develop their social skills. Teacher acted as the host of the

grade eight students. Since there are 40students, 8 groups were made composing of 5

students. The science concepts of a particular lesson were written in a cartolina and they

were given 15 minutes to study. Then each group would choose one participant to play

the easy question, the other one for the average, another one for difficult and the last

student would break the tie if ever happened. Each degree of difficulty had

corresponding points; easy ( 1 point), average ( 3 points) and difficult ( 5 points). The

name of the group who won the particular day was tallied in the record book and at the

end of the week they received school supplies. The science concepts of two or more

lessons were given ahead especially during weekends to give them enough time to study.

The researcher monitored the total points being garnered by each group within

ten successive ten weekdays. After ten days of the activity, the students were given a

finale of the game in which all the question given throughout the game will be used.

Then, they were given a pencil and paper test using all the questions during the entire

period of the activity.

The result of the finale activity and the post test determined whether the tool

used in improving their understanding in Science concepts would be effective or not.

Part III. Summary

This action research aimed to improve the understanding of Science VIII concepts

among the Grade VIII students of Tuod Integrated School, Tuod, Manticao, Misamis

Oriental of school year 2018 – 2019.

The class were divided into 8 groups with 5 members. At the beginning, each

group was given sets of questions on science concepts for them to study in advance.

Before the game each group was given at least 15 minutes to study the given questions.

During the game, the teacher acted as the host. After 5 consecutive weeks of doing the

game, the students were given a pencil and paper test with the questions used in the

games.

The result of the written test showed that more than 86% of the pupils or 34 of

them got more than 75% passing score. This further showed that the students had truly

understood the science concepts being introduced to them during the game.

The researcher had observed that along the process the students had truly enjoyed

the activity besides having understood science concepts. This would greatly help in

increasing their grades in Science on the next grading period.
