PROPOSAL FOR M.

TECH PROJECT 2017MCIVST012

ENHANCEMENT OF THE BUCKLING CAPACITY OF BUILT UP COMPOSITE

SECTIONS OF COLD FORM, USING FRP AS STIFFENING MATERIAL.

INTRODUCTION.

Cold formed steel is produced by rolling steel into semi-finished or finished goods at relatively
low temperature.

Compared to hot rolled members, CFS thin walled members offer several advantages of
economy and efficiency, including high strength to weight ratio.

Due to their typically large flat width to thickness ratios, CFS sections are inherently susceptible
to local and global buckling modes.

Fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) profiles are being increasingly used as structural members in
civil engineering applications. The main advantages of FRP profiles over traditional materials
(such as steel and reinforced concrete) stem from their low self weight, high strength and
reduced maintenance requirements, which are valuable assets in a market with increasing
demand for lighter, more durable and faster construction.

The buckling strength of FRP beams w.r.t. CFS is relatively high. Use of FRP as packing in CFS
sections can efficiently delay the buckling phenomenon. Hence improve its flexural
performance.

OBJECTIVES

 Stability failure, in the form of local bucking, is the main problem encountered in light
gauge steel members. This local buckling failure occurs well before the material has
reached its yield strength leaving the section under-utilized compared to its full
capacity.
 Development of FRP and CFS composite beams through new innovative sectional
profiles and stiffening arrangements which would either delay or completely eliminate
the local buckling failure thus allowing the section to reach its full load carrying capacity.
 Compare the adequacy of composite sections of FRP and CFS with other materials used
before
 Its high strength to weight ratio will allow us to use it in earthquake resistance
structures
 finally arrive to the specific conclusions for field implementation purposes.

METHODOLOGY

Suitable arrangements will be done for the testing of sections using 4 point loading system on
various proposed sections. The bonding between CFRP and steel will be ensured to maintain
the integrity of the composite section. The tests will be conducted on the plain CFS section, FRP
section and finally conducted on composite sections. Strength variation will be checked by
using different bonding materials (epoxy,screws).
