ABSTRACT

Carboxylic Acids are organic compounds characterized by the presence of a carboxyl (COOH) group. It is any class
of organic compound in which a carbon (C) atom is bonded to an oxygen (O) atom by a double bond and to a
hydroxyl group (-OH) by a single bond. Carboxylic Acids are known for its acidic property, being generally more
acidic than most organic compounds containing hydroxyl groups but are generally weaker than some familiar
mineral acids. On the other hand, Carboxylic Acid Derivatives are compounds in which the –OH of the carboxyl
group is replaced with other functional groups. In this experiment, the reactivity of carboxylic acid derivatives:
halide, anhydride, ester, and amides were identified and differentiated. The classification tests executed by the
group included the hydrolysis of acid derivatives, alcoholysis, aminolysis and hydroxamic acid test. In hydrolysis,
only acetyl chloride reacted with

In alcoholysis, odors of the compounds were both plastic balloon-like odor for Acetyl
chloride and Acetic anhydride. Meanwhile, in aminolysis, formation of precipitate on both
compounds were clearly evident.

In hydrolysis, both acetyl chloride and acetic anhydride reacted with evolution of gasbut
only acetyl chloride was observed to have a warming effect with formation of precipitate.
Benzamide on the otherhand proved to be basic.

In hydroxamic acid test, deep burgundy discoloration on the two compounds were observed,
excluding the preliminary test. Lastly, the reactions involved in each classification test
wereexpounded through the chemical equations and mechanisms and the reactivities of
these compounds were singledout
