In a competitive world, all companies want to know what the next trend is going
to be in their 31 so that they can plan for the future and thrive at work. In the
past, the best guide to future trends was to look and listen to what was happening.
For example, once you looked through newspapers and measured 32 space
that was devoted to particular topics, you found an emerging "trend." However, it is
more difficult to use this method nowadays because of much more information.

Alan Kay, the American computer scientist, said that the best way to predict
the future is not to find out what the next big thing is 33 to invent it, although
keeping your eyes and ears open is still necessary. It is important to notice how
people are enthusiastically playing. Trends often 34 people's hobbies and
things they do to have fun. Take Apple for instance. It was founded by two members
of the Homebrew Computer Club, a group of hobbyists who played around with
computers in the 1970s and 80s. 35 , the whole social networking phenomenon
– Facebook, etc. – was built on people sharing photographs or personal information
in their free time.

To monitor what topics are trending can make a significant impact on business
and marketing strategy, but gaining valuable and timely insights from everyday life
or a hobby can even help. They give us something fun to do and afford us so many
different options out there today.

SectionⅢ: Reading Comprehension 閱讀測驗

本部份含二篇短文,請根據各篇文意選出最恰當的選項,劃記於答案卡上。
共計 10 題,每題 2 分,共 20 分。

Text 1
According to recent research conducted by Harvard University, consumers are
becoming more ethically-minded. A product with a label proclaiming its fair labor
conditions has better chances of being sold, even if it commands a higher than ever
price than its counterparts that carry no such labels. No wonder companies take
their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) more seriously now than ever to add to
the appeal of their products.

Other statistics show that three fourths of British consumers are interested in
buying products that provide labor standards and possess "green" credentials.
Products which were labeled attaining those standards are selling like hot cakes.
But are these consumers making the right choice? Unfortunately, all this ethical
selling may not abide by conscientious practices. Many companies hide facts or
even tell minor lies when it comes to making grandiose claims about the "ethical" or
"green" badge of their products.

Going green is a growing trend worldwide among consumers as well as

companies. Most consumers are happy to contribute to making the environment
better. However, not many consumers will go an extra mile for this. They only want
the "green" products that are of good quality and not costlier than the alternatives.
On the other hand, if they can easily procure "non-green" products that are cheaper,
attractively packaged, and of decent quality, they will be happy to buy them instead.
The lesson here for companies that sell "green" products is to strike the right
balance. Aggressively promoting "green" products as "environmentally-friendly"
may not always sell. Consumers should be convinced both of their personal and
environmental benefits. Consumers' personal benefits could include health benefits,
energy savings, cost effectiveness, and so on. "Lower prices" still remains the major
allure for most customers. Walmart seems to have hit the nail on its head when
it proclaimed in one of its ads, "Earth-friendly products won't save the Earth if they
don't save people's money."

Text 2
The institution of marriage has likely existed for as long as civilization itself.
While throughout history it has clearly been defined as a union between a man and
woman, this definition has been challenged in recent decades by supporters of
same-sex marriage. In many countries around the world, there has been a growing
acceptance of homosexual people and the notion that they should have the same
rights as any other member of the society, including the right to marry anyone they
choose, which has become known as "marriage equality".

While homosexuality was largely condemned or considered unacceptable in

most societies in the past, attitudes regarding this and other social issues have
been gradually evolving over the past half-century, largely as a result of civil rights
movements around the world. The Netherlands was the first country to legally
recognize same-sex marriage in 2001, followed by Belgium two years later, and
then Spain and Canada in 2005. Since then, ten other countries, such as South
Africa and Norway, have passed legislation granting the right of matrimony to gay
couples, while a number of others recognize other types of partnerships, often
called "civil unions". In Asia, Taiwan may be the first place to allow same-sex
marriage after its parliament, known as Legislative Yuan, amends or enacts new
laws by 2019.

Regardless of its growing acceptance, marriage equality is still a controversial

issue in many parts of the world. One of the biggest debates is raging in the United
States where a number of states have extended marriage rights to gay couples.
There is no federal law regarding gay marriage, however, and many state and
national politicians and leaders are strongly opposed to it on what they claim are
moral and religious grounds. To many, both in the U.S. and in other countries
where people hold strong religious beliefs, same-sex marriage is considered to be
a serious threat to the institution of marriage and to society itself. It would seem,
however, that the trend towards marriage equality is gaining a momentum that its
opponents in many countries may soon be unable to stop.

their notions of family values.
(C) It is likely that the United States will grant same-sex marriage laws to gay
