GURBANI GRAMMAR

• Guru Sahib utilized a Grammar system


in Gurbani which is key to
understanding the meanings of Gurbani

Grade5 - J.Singh
• In Grade 5, we will learn basic Gurbani
rules, and try to analyze its usage and
help us understand Gurbani
• We will learn 10 basic rules, with
concentration on usage of Aunkar AONkV
and Sihari ishwrI on nouns and
2 adjectives.
GURBANI GRAMMAR
Rule # 1
ijnW nwvW dy AKIrly A~Kr nMU AONkV l~gI hovy, auh Awm qOr qy iek
vcn puilMg huMdy hn[ Any Noun, that gets Aunkar on its last
letter is generally Singular, Masculine Noun (MSN rule)

• vfw swihbu vfI nweI kIqw jw kw hovY
In this example “swihbu” is a noun, and has Aunkar – which tells us
that swihbu is Masculine Noun, and is Singular (one God)

• hir kw nwmu jn kI vifAweI


In this example “nwmu” is a noun, and has Aunkar – which tells us
that nwmu is Masculine Noun, and is Singular (one God’s Name)
Also in this example “jn” is a noun, and does not have Aunkar –
which tells us that jn Plural (Multiple persons)

ijho ijhw nWv dw srUp huMdw hY, auho ijhw hI ivSySn dw rUp huMdw hY[
The adjective for a noun will be in same format (Aunkar) as the
noun itself

In this example dwqw is a noun, and we know there is only one God.
The adjective ieku follows this noun, and has aunkar in the end

• Amulu Drmu Amulu Prmwxu


In this example Drmu and Prmwxu are a nouns, and have Aunkar –
which tells us that those are Masculine, Singular nouns
Thus, the adjective Amulu for each noun, also follows this and has
aunkar in the end

jWdI hY[ Any Noun that is masculine and plural form, will
generally not get an Aunkar on the last letter.

In this example “dIp, loA, pwqwl” are nouns, but there are no
Aunkars on its last letter, which means it is plural. There are
multiple dIp, loA, pwqwl

• suinAY syK pIr pwiqswh


In this example “siK, pIr, pwiqswh” are nouns, but there are no
Aunkars on its last letter, which means it is plural. There are
multiple siK, pIr, pwiqswh

ibnw huNdw hY [ The adjective any Noun that is masculine and
plural form, will generally not get an Aunkar on the last letter.

• AsMK mUrK AMD Gor
In this example “mUrK” is the noun, but there are no Aunkars on its
last letter, which means it is plural. “mUrK” is the adjective. Since
the subject noun does not get Aunkar, it’s adjective does not get
Aunkar on it’s last letter either.
