Rear Wheel Bearing and Hub Replacement

Preliminary Procedure

1. Remove the tire and wheel. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation .
2. Remove the wheel drive shaft retaining nut. Refer to Wheel Drive Shaft
Replacement .
3. Without disconnecting the hydraulic brake hose from the caliper, remove and support
the brake caliper with bracket as an assembly and remove the rear brake rotor. Refer
to Rear Brake Rotor Replacement .
Wheel Drive Shaft Retaining Nut
1 Tip: Remove the wheel drive shaft retaining nut. Refer to Wheel Drive Shaft
Replacement .
Wheel Bearing/Hub Assembly Mounting Bolts (Qty: 3)

Tighten: 115 N.m (85 lb ft)


Wheel Bearing/Hub Assembly
Tip:

 Note the orientation of wheel speed sensor pigtail, if equipped, during


removal to aid in installation.
 Disconnect the wheel speed sensor electrical connector, if equipped.
3  Install the J 42129 Wheel Hub Remover, CJ129 Universal Hub Puller -
Snap-On, 7394 Universal Hub Puller - OTC, or equivalent, to the wheel
bearing/hub assembly and secure with lug nuts. See Special Tools.
 Using the J 42129 or equivalent, begin to disengage the wheel drive shaft
from the wheel bearing/hub assembly. See Special Tools.
 Ensure the backing plate is positioned correctly during installation.

NOTE:
The ball stud must not rotate during disassembly or reassembly. Hand tools must be used to keep
the ball stud from rotating. If air tools are used and the stud is allowed to rotate, damage to the ball
stud and/or stud mounting hole may occur.

Preliminary Procedure: Remove the wheel bearing/ hub assembly. Refer to Rear Wheel
Bearing and Hub Replacement.
Rear Adjustment Link Retaining Nut

NOTE:
Refer to Fastener Notice .

Tip: Using the J-42188-B Ball Joint Separator, separate the rear adjustment
link from the suspension knuckle. DO NOT loosen the adjustment jamb nut.
Refer to Adjustment Link Replacement.

Tighten: 30 N.m (22 lb ft) ± 150 degrees.


Upper Ball Joint Retaining Nut
Tip:

 Loosen but DO NOT remove the nut until the ball stud has been separated
2 from the knuckle.
 Using the J-42188-B , separate the ball stud from the knuckle.

Tighten: 30 N.m (22 lb ft) ± 150 degrees.


Lower Ball Joint Retaining Nut
Tip:

 Rotate the forward edge of the knuckle fully outboard to provide access
for the J-42188-B .

 Loosen but DO NOT remove the nut until the ball stud has been separated
from the knuckle.
 Using the J-42188-B , separate the ball stud from the knuckle.

Tighten: 40 N.m (30 lb ft) ± 135 degrees

Preliminary Procedure

1. Remove the tires and wheels. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation .
2. Remove the muffler. Refer to Muffler Replacement (LNF) or Muffler
Replacement (LE5) .
3. Remove the stabilizer shaft links from the end of the stabilizer shaft. Refer to
Stabilizer Shaft Link Replacement.
Bolts, Stabilizer Shaft Mounting Bracket (Qty: 4)

Tip: The bolts DO NOT have to be removed for this procedure. Loosen the
bolts until the insulator can be removed from the stabilizer shaft.
