Correct installation, suitable treatment of the liquid
before anci after the passage through the rnachine,
correct operation and handling.:f the machin€ ac-
cording to the directions givcn in this book, cleanli-
ness, carefulness and rnethodic¡rl overhaul are factors
of ti:e greatest irnportance fo¡ t:nsuring the best rna-
chine function and intended results.
CONTENTS As appears frorn the table of contents, the Instruc-
tion B ook contaíns i.nstructions concerning installation
and operation, disrnantling and assembly as well as
cleaning and overhaul.. Since practically all machine
parts have been identified by a part number, the In-
st¡uction Book serves also as a PART NUMBER LIST
(SPARE PARTS LrST).
The lnstruction Book deals not only with parts and
devices incl.uded in the standard design, but also with
special and alternative equipment. Parts incorporated
in the deal are specified in the packing list acr,orrlpa-
nying the shiprnent.
The constructional particulars given in the Instruction
Book are not bindi.ng. We reserve the rrght to rrtal<e
alterations without previous notice. Reconstructions
rnade after delivery are not followed by new Instruc-
tion Books.
DISPOSITION Every chapter of this boc¡k has its own reference iet-

ALFA. LAVAL GENERAL INFOR\4ATION

SUPPLEMENT if the Instruction Book is intended for a rnachine

rnade to special order, supplementary instructions are
often given in chapter Y - please check this before
placing the rnachine in service. Supplementary data
(on treatment of liquid, weights etc. ) are often found
also in the technical information subrnitted in connec-
tion with the purchase.
The ALFA -LAVAL/DE LAVAL representative ig al-
ways glad to provide advice and inforrnation beyond
the contents of this Instruction B ook.

TYPE DENOMINATION It rnay occur that the type denornination on the type
MANUFACTURING No. plate of the machine and on the title page of the In-
struction Book are not exactly identical. In such
caseg the rnanufacturing No. of the rnachine is deter-
rnining; the correct Instruction Book is always marked
with the rnanufacturing nurnber appearing on the type
plate. Always state the type denornination indicated on
the type plate when ordering spa¡-es.

SAFETY REGULATIONS Chapter K contains a survey of the safety regulations

which must ABSOLUTELY be observed when the
machine is to be used.
The electric installation rnust be done by an experienced
electrician with knowledge of the local safety
stipulations.
It should be noted that, as a ru1e, the instruction
book contai¡rs no safety regulations necessitated by
any special propertiee of the process liquid, such as
inflarnrnability' toxicity or corrosiveness.

LUBRICATION As a ru1e, the mounting instructions are mentioning

CLEANiNG only what part or parts should be lubricated or
cleaned. All information on lubricants and cleaning
agents to be used ie given in chaptere H and L.

TEC}{NICAL INFORMATION
Function - Definitions - Factors influencing the Process
lnJorrnation on for instance the treatrnent of the process li-
quid is contained also in the technical inforrnation sent to you
in connection with the purchase of the rnachine.

FUNCTiON The purpose of the operation is either to liberate a

liquid frorn strange particles, or to separate two
inte¡rnixed liquids.

DEFINITIONS
Th¡oughput This rneans the quanti.ty of liquid supplied per uni.t
fime. The throughput is given in cu. rn/h or l/h (Imp.
gatls7uh).
Reception ability This means the largest liquid quantity that the borvl
can treat per unit time, expressed in cu. r.r/h or l/l't
(I-p.ga1\s/h).
Clarification A liquid - sludge separation in which the machine is
used to separate particles, normally solid ones, f rom
a liquid having a lower specific gravity than that oi
the particles.
Purification A Iiquid - Iiquid separation in r.vhich the machine is
used f or separating two interrnixed liquids, r¡'hich ¿rrc'
insoluble in each othe¡ and have different specific
gravities. Solids with specific gravities higher than
those of the liquids can be separated off at the same
tirne.

Concentration A liquid - Iiquid Eeparation in which the machine is

used for separati¡¡g two intermixed liquids, which are
ingoluble in each other and have different apecific
I gravities, the heavier liquid constituting lhe major
part of the mixture. Solide with apecific gravities
higher t}ran those of the liquids can be aeparated off
at tJre a:une ti¡ne.

s8565lE
ALFA. LAVAL TECHNICAL INFORMATION

FACTORS INFLUENCING
THE SEPARATION
Difference in The centrifugal {orce acts on all particlea proportionally
specific gravity to their apecific gravity. Thie applies to rolid particles
as well ae to fluid particles. The greater the difference
in epecific gravity' the eaeier the s eparation.

Size and shape The larger the particle, the quicker the sedirnenta-
of particles tion. The particlea to be separated off muet not be
so srnall that the rnixture is clos e to colloidal state.
The ernooth and ror¡nd particle is easier separated
off than the irregular one.
Rough treatrrrent, such as in purnPs' can split the
particles, with reduced gize and separating speed as
a reeult.

Viscosity The rnore fluid a liquid is, the quicker is the

s e parating proce s s and the bette r the s eparation -

i¡ other words, low viscosity irnproves the separation

result. The viecoeity can in rnany cales be ¡educed
by heating.

Tirne in If the separation is not eatisfactory, the throughput

centrifugal field rnuet be reduced. Lowe¡ throughput gives, norrnally,
a better separation result.

C LARIFICATION

C entrifugal force Clarifier bowl

This bowl has one outlet. The process liquid
Bowl parts flows through the distributor to the interspaces
between the bowl discs. Through the action of
Liquid the centrifugal force the hearry particles rrrove
along the underside of the üscs towards t]¡e
Solids bowl periphery, whe¡e they settle on the bowl
wall. The liquid proceeds towarde the bowl centre
and discharges through the bowl hood.
The course of separation can'be influenced e.g.
by changee in the viscosity (riee in separating
temperature) or in the throughput.

TECHNICAL INFORMATION

CHOICE OF NOZZLES The size ol the hole diameter of the nozzles rnust be
selected according to the arnor¡nt of liquid fed to the
rnachine, the proportion of solid phase in the feed,
and the quantity and concentration of healy phaee
(concentrate) to be discharged.

Graph The graph, which appli.es to operation with water,

shows how the flow through the nozzles increases with
increasing orifice diarneter in the nozzles. The figure
in the paranthesis after the type denornination indicates
the normal nurnber of nozzles in the bowl
Y = Total flow through all nozzLe" i., r.r3/n,
X = Ori.fice diarnete¡ in mrn.

Adjustable
paring tube The nozzle throughput is proportional to nozzle croas-
sectional area when the adjustable paring tube is in ite
outermost position in the paring charnber. If the paring
tube is moved to its i¡rnermost position, the throughput
is reduced by about Z5%.

This is particularly irnportant in plants on which high
hygienic demands are rnade, such as in the food
indus try.
Grind and polish all welding searns (hard-solderings)
carefully.
All attachrnents ,,hould be made so as to allow ,.,aria-
tions in length and to prevent transrnission of strains
and vibrations.
Blow or flush out each section of the piping after
rnounting. Also flush out the whole pipe systern after
installation so that rnetallic ashes and other irnpuri-
ties are rernoved entirely and cannot get into the
rnachine, purnps or other apparatuses.
C}IECKING Exarnine the installation before putting the rnachine
into service. Check particularly:
o That the bowl rotates clockwise and at prescribed speed.
o That the nuts of the anchor bolts are tightened
according to directions in chapter S.
o That the directions given under the heading
BEFORE STARTING in chapter K have been observed.
CLEAN]NG PLACE A table, a stand or the like affording place for tJ:e
bowl and its special tools should be arranged as near
the rnachine as possible.

LUBRICATION
The grade of oil to be used fo¡ lubrication of the worrn gear
must be chosen with reference to the operating and arnbient
temperaturee. Extrernely high or low ternperatures rnay re-
quire a different grade of oil . lúihen in doubt, consult an
authorised ALFA-I"AVAL/DE LAVAL representative.

CAU TION NEVER start the machine without checking that the
lubricating oil level cornes up to the correct height on
the gauge glass - aee I'Oil fillingr| below. The ma-
chine is delivered without oil in the worrn gear housing.
WORM GEAR HOUSING The rnachine must contain a given quantity of oil ,
which is splashed by the rotating wortrr wheel over
all bearings and inetrurnent worrn gears (splash and
oil-rnist lub rication).

Grade of oil Use VACUUM OIL 600W or other oi} of equivalent

propertie s .
Viecosity 165 SSU at 2l0o!', corresponding to 4.4o8 at I00oC'
Quantity The oil surr¡p in the wor¡n gear housing holds aPProx'
9 litres (2 frnp. Cal).
Oi1 filling Supply oil until the 1evel reachee the upper half of the
gauge glaae. The oi1 level rnugt never be allowed to
fall below the lower edge of the glaea.
Gauge glaes If the gauge glaee is fluted, the flutings should be
vertical. Keep t.l.e gauge glass clean, ae a rirn wiIl
othe¡w'ise forrn on the ingide which can be rnietaken
for the oil level.
Oil check Check the oil level before evely etarting. Check tJ:e
oil condition once a week imrnediately after the ma-
chine has stopped, before any dirt has had tirne to
eettle, proceeding as followe:

Slacken the drain screw a few turns and take a sarnple
of the oil. If this should be dirty, drain the surnp and
refill with fresh oil. If the machine has stood idle
(".g, overnight), the drain screw should be slackened
a few turns to drain off any water present in the
surrrP.
Oi1 change Change the oil for the first tirne after 300 hours'
operation and then after every 1500 hours' operation.
Any sedi.rnent in the bottom of the sump should be
removed with a suitable cleanser (see Chapter L) ,
which should be drained off through the drain hole.
The inside of the worrn gear housing should then be
wiped dry with a clean rag (not waste).
Check that the gaskets are in good condition.

BALL BEARING Always use best-quality ball bearing grease of lithiurn

GREASE soap type according to NLGI class Z or 3 suitable lor

METHODS OF LUBRi- The following general rules apply to pa.rts requiring

CATION lubrication: the surfaces should be lubricated every
tirne the part is rnounted. The lubrication procedure
rnay however vary according to the purpose for whicir
the part has been disrnantled.
Priming with rrto Work the paste into the surface with a close-woven
lybdenu¡rr dísuI- cotton cloth, charnois leather or a fairly stiff horse-
phide paste hair b¡ush - lollow any directions on the container.
Lubrication with Always lubricate where this is recornrnended, even
rnolybd enurn di - after priming. Apply the grease with a stiff paintbrush
sulphide grease or sirnilar in a thin, fairly even layer.
Lubricated bear- Bearings without grease nipples mlrst be opened for
ing s lubrication. Note the consistency of the grease - if
it has hardened, it should be changed.
INLET. OUTLET
(Chapter I)
Seal ring SeaI rings and the surfaceg w'ith which they are in
contact should be lubricated before assembly w-ith
glycerin, silicone grease or liquid-phase.

bearing grease at tJlre tirne of the annual overhaul'
The bea¡ing should algo be pressure lubricated frorn
tirne to tirne through the greaee nipple. Experience
will indicate how often thie is needed.
The condiüon of the aeal deterrnines how much grease
can safely be injected - if the bearing overheats after

EXCIIANGE of PARTS Each bowl constitutes a balanced unit rvhich u'ill get
out of balance if any parts having snrr:r.''added to
their part number in the general drawing are ex-
changed without the bowl being rebalanced. To pre-
vent confusion of parts, for instance when a plant
consists of several rnachines of the same type, these
rnain parts are stamped either with the complete
manufacturing nurnber or its th¡ee Iast digits.

CUIDES When assembling rnake sure that the parts are placeri
in the pos ition defined by the guide s . Be careful not
to darnage the guides when handling the parts.

OPERATION

DATA see chaPter C.

SPECIAL EQUIPMENT see chaPter X.

SAFETY In all centrifugal separators the bowl rotates at a

REGULATIONS very high speed, normally between I00 and 150 revo-
lutions per SECOND. Thus, very great f orces are
released and it is. essential, therefore, to follow
strictly the directions given in the Inetruction Book
concerning assembly of parts, starting, stopping and
ov rhaul .
e

In this connection remember particularly:

to tighten the bowl Iock ring (lock rings),
to fasten carefully the frarne hood as well as the
i¡rIet and outlet parts,
to check the speed,
that no rnachi.ne part must be Ioosened until the
bowl has topped rotating,
that bowl body, bowl hood and lock ring rnuat
¡,
¡-
!l
never be heated by means ol a flame,
that the machine must never be used for pro-
cessing liquide with a higher deneity (temperature,
sludge nature etc. ) than that for which it was originai-
Iy intended. Thus, always coneult an ALFA-LAVAL
representative before using the rnachine beyond its
proper range of eeParation.

ALFA.LAVAL OPERATIOI{

BEFORE STARTING The bowl must be properly cleaned and assembled

according to the directions in chapters L and I.
Check before Btarti¡g each time:
o That the brake ie off and the bowl can turn freely.
o That the covers are clamped by the hinged bolts.
o That the oi1 level i¡ the worm gear housing
reaches more than half-way up the gauge g1ass.
Note. The oil level must never be allowed to sink
below the lower edge of the gauge glass. If
the glass is provided with corrugations they
ú
G should be vertical. Keep the gauge glass clean,
otherwise a li¡re, which could be mistaken for
the oil level, will in tirne build up on the
ins ide of the glas s .
If the machine has been idle (for instance
during a night) , sclew out the drain screw
sorne turns and drain off any water.

Process liquid Check that the process liquid does not contain particles
larger than the hole diameter of the nozzles.

OPERATION

STARTING o Start the drivi¡g motor.

Filling the bowl o FilI the bowl withprocess liquidorar¡xiliaryliquid
(water) i¡nrnediateLy after starting. W?¡en liquid starts
to rr:n out of the concentrate outlet (23), the supply
of liquid can be reduced.
o When the bowl hae run up to fu1I speed, replace
the auxiliary liquid gradually with process liquid.
Note. The bowl mugt be kept filled during running up,
operation and rr¡nni¡rg down.

RUNNiNG During operation, check:

o Oil level
o Speed
o Power consurnption
o Throughput

STOPPING o Shut off tJre supply of procees liquid and replace it

gradually with auxiliary liquid.
o Switch off the driving rnotor and apply the brake.
Cleaning To facilitate bowl cleaning, the ternperature of the
auxiliary liquid should be raised and the rate of fecri
varied so as to fiII and empty the bowl at regular
inte rval s.
!'iushing liquid The outside of the bowl and the space around it ar-c
flushed through the irüets (12 and 28) during the
running-down period.
Running - down Liquid rnugt be supplied to the bowl to keep it fillerd
: l':'ii;d throughout the running-down period. It is advisable
to use the b¡ake, mairüy because this reduces the
time during which the bowl runs at the crítical sper:ri
which is accompanied by vibration. If sludge has bee¡r
deposited unevenly in the bowl, the vibrations may
become very severe. The object of keeping the bo*I

CLEAI{ING. OVERFIAUL
It has proved very difficutt in practice to prescribe how
often cleaning should be carried out and how thorough the
overhaul should be. However, aided by the directions given
in this chapter it ehould not be difficult to make up a suitable
working routine with regard paid to special local conditions.
The ALFA-LAVAL/DE LAVAL representative will always be
glad to provide further ,advice and inforrnation'

GENERAL HINTS W'hen cleaning and overhauling always follow strictly

the directions given in this book concerning the dis-

CLEANING

CLEANINC ACENTS
Metallic rrrachine Use cleaning kerosene, white spirit, mineral spirit
parts or another solvent with equivalent properties.
If the cleaning agent is unsuitable in view of the pro_
duct of the process, the bowl, inlet and outlet parts
in contact with liquid can norrnally be cleaned with a
soda or t¡isodiumphosphate solution, or with any
current technical defatting agent on an alkalíne basis,
A certain care should be exercised when cleaning light
metal parts, as these rnay be attacked by strong
alkaline soluti ons
.

Benzine or benzol rnay also be used for the metal

parts, but if so, the cleaning should be done in the
open air due to the risk of explosion, and because
benzol vapours are dangerous to inhale.

Seal rings Wipe seal ríngs with a cloth rnoistened with eorne of
the above cleaning agents.

Coupling pads and TrichlorethyLene should be used for cleaning these

t: brake lining parts and the corresponding friction surfaces. Note
that it should be done under safe control (ventilation),
and preferably in the open air.

Note. Al1 rnetallic parts EXCEPT the friction su¡faces in

clutch coupling and brake must be oiled after cleaning
- see chapter H.

CLEANING

BOWL CLEANING Experience rnust determine how often the bowl needs
to be stopped, disrnantled and cleaned. This depends
partly on the nature of the sludge in the process liquid
and the condition of strainere and filters, The intervals
between dismantlings must also be chosen according to
whether or not the lock ring shows a tendency to stick
on the bowl body. It is difficult to give anv general rulc
on how often the lock ring should be u¡rscrewed for
lubrication of the threads, as this depends partly on
the kind of Iub¡icant used and partly on the care rvith
which it is applied. To prevent the bowl body from
sticking on the spindle, the former should be lifted
off once a month for lubrication of the tapered part
of the spindle. This, then, sets a lirnit on the interval
between dismantlings, but here too the interval can l)(:
extended or shortened in the light of experience.

Special tools Use the special tools - see Chapter F.

B owl b ody and The bowl discs can be flushed clean in place on the
disc s et distributor. The stack should however be dismantled
occasionally and the discs cleaned individually.
Note The separation resuft suffers if the bowl. discs
are not properly cleaned.
Discharge tto z zLe s Screw out the nozzles of the bowl body before being
cleaned by rneans of cleaning tooLs.

Flushing outside The outside of the bowl is flushed during the running-
of bowl down period through the flushing nozzle in the frame
- see chapter K.

thread thread

In a new bowl, the guide marks (0) should be right in

front of each other. In tirne, these marks can be drawn
past each other due to wear of the threads. When the
Q-rnark of the lock ring can be drawn past the other
f-rnark by rnore than 25-30', an authorized ALFA-
LAVAL/DE LAVAL representative should be consulted.
Thread checking should be done at least once a year.
The checking is carried out as follows:
Unscrew the large lock ring, remove the dist¡ibutor
with disc set. Rernove the outer seal ring of the bowl
hood, put on the hood and screw on the lock ring.
Tighten the large lock ring anti-clockwise till tight
contact is obtained between the contact surfaces of
bowl body and bowl hood.

Pressure in disc If the lock rirrg can be tightened without resistance by

set rrreans of the spanner till the hood lies tightly against
the bowl body, the preseure should be increased by
E adding the extra bowl disc (inctudea in the eet of
spares) on top of the set of bowl discs. Make sure
the seal ring lies i¡ its groove in the bowl hood.

GENERAL HINTS
Motor The speed pre scribed for the ingoing shaft of the ma-
chine (the worrn wheel ahaft) and which must on no
conditione be exceeded, ia etamped on the type plate
of the rnachine. The worm gear ratio and the fricti.on
blocks of the clutch are suited to this speed.
Check the numbe¡ of revolutions by means of the re-
volution counter after inatallation and after exchange
of motor.
For particulars concerning power requirement and
speed see chapter C.
Coupling pu!.ley When the rnachine ie delivered with rnotor, the pulley
or belt p ulley hae been fastened in its co¡rect poeition on the rnotor
shaft. Score the poeition of the pulley before loosen-
ing it frorn the motor ghaft. The axial play for the
elastic plate - measurerrlent "a" in illuet¡ation -
should be about 2 mrn (5/64").
When finishing a predrilled coupling pulley or belt
pulley, the tolerance H7-J6 acccrdinq to ISO shoul'd be
applied.

Electric cable The electric cable to the rnoto¡ ahoul,d preferably have
a free tength allow'ing the removal of the rnotor with-
out dieconnecting the cable from the terrninale.
