Natural Family Planning THE GOSPEL OF PEACE

THE GOSPEL OF PEACE

and the Christian Moral Code THE GOSPEL OF PEACE by Father John J. Hugo
Fr. John Hugo (1911–1985) was a priest of the Diocese of Pitts-
burg who spent much of his life giving retreats based upon those
that he had participated in while still a young priest in the 1930s.
Those retreats were given by Fr. Onesimus Lacouture S. J. and Fr.
Hugo was one of over 6000 priests to whom the retreat was given
over a course of several years. The Retreat, as it was affectionately
called by its devoteés was an electrifying and life-changing expe-
rience for many of them. It was nothing more nor less than the
Spiritual Excercises of Saint Ignatius. But these retreats given by
Fr. Lacouture were, as the saying goes “the real deal.” They were
given as St. Ignatius intended, for the proper length of time and
according to the true Ignatian spirit. They got to the real “roots”
of Christian living. They were, in short, radical.
Fr. Hugo became a disciple of Fr. Lacouture in the sense that

by Father John J. Hugo

he experienced the fruits and saw the necessity of the retreat for
Catholic Americans. He determined to continue that work as
part of his priestly vocation. Fr. Hugo became the spiritual advisor
of Dorothy Day (and the Catholic Worker Movement) who took
the retreat more than twenty times during her life.
This book, The Gospel of Peace, is one fruit of that work, and it
was very controversial at the time of its publication in 1943. The
Gospel of Jesus Christ is always controversial because it is “out of
step” with the world.

day Pilgrims who have for almost 20 years now made the yearly
Pilgrimage for Restoration on foot, either from the Shrine of
Kateri Tekawitha at Fonda New York only seven miles away, or
the three-day Pilgrimage from the Lake of the Blessed Sacrament Land of Crosses
(Lake George) 72 miles away, can attest to the energy it takes to
climb that hill after their long hike—and that is without running
any gauntlet of blood-thirsty Mohawks!

This shrine is one of the glories of the Catholic church in North

America and all who can visit it are encouraged to do so, at least
once in their lives. The editor can attest to the deep spiritual
peace that is present on that hallowed ground. The famous Ravine
where St. René Goupil’s relics were lost (and presumably are still
part of the landscape there) is hauntingly beautiful and a place
where many graces have been bestowed and received.

This is the story of that Shrine and of the heroes who made it a
place of heavenly peace and grace—The Land of Crosses!

Msgr. Philip Hughes

The temptation of the Church historian is to begin at the
beginning and then go steadily on, the second century following
the first and the third the second etc. It is a temptation that Msgr.
Hughes has resisted. He has seen a better principle. The Church
was born into the world, and the first phase of her history is
in that world, the world that was already there. But gradually
she remade that world and the second, quite different, phase
of her history was in the world she had made. Then the world
Revolted. Thus book three.

The Last Crusade

Warren Carroll
This most recent Catholic crusade was fought in Spain in the
year 1936. It was fought by the good in hope that a dynasty once
proudly called ‘most Catholic’ would rise again to rule this great
country. The agenda of the forces fighting against Franco was not
to liberate an oppressed people, rather it was to bury the monarchy
and the Catholic Church.

The Roman Martyrology
3rd Turin Edition
The historical importance and the spiritual value of this
edition is inestimable. We hope that this offering from Lore-
to will fill the desires of many souls who will know best how
to utilize this volume to their advantage. The 20th century may
well have been the bloodiest in the long and glorious history of
the Church of God upon earth. Remember that the blood of
the martyrs is the seed of the Church. God willing, we will reap
a bountiful harvest of souls in the 21st century.
May the example of those who have already tread the path
of the cross, fortify our souls, give us courage, and provide hope
that we too may have the grace to receive, with grateful affec-
tion, whatever end the providence of God has destined for us.

What is Loreto Publications?
Loreto Publications is a Roman Catholic missionary apostolate whose ultimate
goal is the conversion of these United States of America to the Catholic religion.
Loreto has been consecrated to Jesus through the Immaculate Heart of Mary
and we have chosen St. Thérèse of the Child Jesus as our special patron and
protector. She visited the Holy House of Loreto. It was her favorite shrine in all
of Christendom.

Our Principles of Publication

1. We intend to make available only those works that are completely in line with
Catholic dogma and morals and to defend and promote the full and integral
Catholic religion with no compromises.
2. We strive to have our own published works printed and bound using high
quality materials and graphics. We are able sometimes to assist priests, missionaries,
and prison ministries with free or reduced cost books as finances allow. Please
contact us for details.
3. We will distribute the work of other Catholic publishers but ONLY if it meets
all of our criteria and is of lasting value.

May the blessings of Almighty God and the tender protection of St. Thérèse,
St. Joseph, and the Mother of God remain upon you always.

Damaged Books
It sometimes happens that some books shipped to us are received slightly
damaged. The content of these books are invaluable so we offer these slightly
damaged books to you at a discount. Most of the books have very minor scrapes
or other imperfections. We can not guarantee the availability of any specific titles,
and these books are sold “as-is.” If you are interested in these books please call or
email us for availability.
