Reducing the Fault Detection Time

! !
 Common fault detection mechanisms are described as follows:
 Hardware detection: For example, the SDH alarm function can be used to detect link
faults.
 Hello mechanism: It usually refers to the Hello mechanism of routing protocols. The
Hello mechanism can detect a fault in seconds.
 Other fault detection mechanisms: Protocols and vendors may provide dedicated fault
detection mechanisms, such as bidirectional forwarding detection (BFD).
 Common fault detection methods used in NE series routers are as follows:
 Adjust the value on the Hello timer: Set the interval for sending Hello packets to a smaller
value.
 Configure BFD for OSPF: Associate BFD with OSPF.

Reducing the Fault Detection Time—
Configuration Examples

1. Adjust the interval for sending Hello packets:

[P1-Ethernet1/0/0]ospf timer hello 1
//Set the interval for sending Hello packets to 1s. The
default interval is 10s.
2. Configure BFD for OSPF
[P1-ospf-1]bfd all-interfaces enable
//Enable BFD for OSPF and establish a BFD session. If BFD is
configured globally and OSPF neighbor relationships in the
specified OSPF process are in the Full state, OSPF delivers
default BFD parameters to the interfaces in the OSPF process.

Intelligent Timer
 The OSPF intelligent timer controls route calculation, LSA generation,
and LSA receiving to speed up network convergence. The OSPF
intelligent timer speeds up network convergence in two ways:
 In a network where routes are repeatedly calculated, the OSPF intelligent
timer dynamically adjusts the interval for calculating routes through the
user configuration and the exponential damping technology. In this
manner, the route calculation and the CPU resource consumption are
decreased. Routes are calculated after the network topology becomes
stable.
 In an unstable network, if a router generates or receives LSAs due to
frequent topology changes, the OSPF intelligent timer can dynamically
adjust the interval for calculating routes. No LSA is generated or handled
within an interval, which prevents invalid LSAs from being generated and
advertised in the entire network.

Copyright © 2011 Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd. All rights reserved. Page11
Setting the LSA Updating and Receiving
Intervals
 In a stable network that has high requirements for the route
convergence time, the updating and receiving of LSAs can be
expedited in two ways:
 Set the interval for updating LSAs to 0 to disable LSA updating. In this
way, any changes on the network topology or routes can be
immediately advertised in the network through LSAs.

 Set the interval for receiving LSAs to 0 so that changes on the

network topology or routes can be sensed immediately. The default
interval for receiving LSAs is 1s.

Setting the LSA Updating and Receiving
Intervals——Configuration Examples
 Set the interval for updating LSAs:

[HUAWEI-ospf-1]lsa-originate-interval 0
//Set the interval for updating LSAs to 0s. When there is any
change in the network, LSAs are generated and advertised

 Set the interval for receiving LSAs:

[HUAWEI-ospf-1]lsa-arrival-interval 0
//Set the LSA receiving interval to 0s. LSAs are handled
immediately after being received

Copyright © 2011 Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd. All rights reserved. Page13
Setting the SPF Calculation Interval
LSAs have been Sorry, It's not time for
flooded! Calculate calculation, I have to
right now! wait!

 To speed up route convergence without affecting the

working efficiency on routers, you can set the SPF
calculation interval to a small value for a stable network that
has high requirements for the route convergence time.

 Set the SPF calculation interval:

spf-schedule-interval millisecond 100
//The default SPF calculation interval is 100 ms.

Routers interconnect with each other using OSPF and provide the GR mechanism

 It is required that traffic forwarding is not interrupted when Router A restarts the
OSPF process in GR mode or performs a master/slave MPU switchover.

Introduction to LSA
TYPE Name Description
1 Router-LSA Describes the link status and link cost of a router. It is generated by
every router and advertised in the area to which the router belongs.

2 Network-LSA Describes the link status of all routers on a network segment of a

broadcast network or an NBMA. It is generated by a DR and
advertised in the area to which the DR belongs.

3 Network- Describes the routes from a network segment to an area in the AS. It

Summary-LSA is generated by the ABR and advertised in the area where the LSA is
generated.

4 ASBR- Describes routes to an Autonomous System Boundary Router

Summary-LSA (ASBR). It is generated by an ABR and advertised to the areas other

than the area to which the ASBR belongs.

5 AS- external-LSA Describes routes to a destination outside the AS. It is generated by

an ASBR and is flooded in the entire AS.

7 NSSA LSA Describes routes to a destination outside the AS. It is generated by

an ASBR and advertised to NSSAs only.

the VPN-instances on the PEs correspond to

OSPF processes are bound with VPN-

signaling and media traffic are separated.

OSPF VPN-instances use independent VPN
routing tables. Routing information is isolated
