EQ: What is known about sports concussion risk and recovery?

Three Points to Prove: #1: The five leading sports which account for concussions include, bicycling, football,
basketball, MMA types of fighting and soccer.
#2: The effects of a concussion are cumulative in athletes who return to play prior to complete
recovery.
#3: Lack of a proper diagnosis and management of a concussion may result in serious long
term consequences, or risk of coma or death

Point that this Source/Information Proves: # 2: The five leading sports which account for concussions include,
bicycling, football, basketball, MMA types of fighting and soccer.

Excerpts (These should provide insight into the designated Point to Prove):

“High school athletes' recovery times for a sports concussion are longer than college athletes' recovery times.”

“High school athletes who sustain a concussion are three times more likely to sustain a second concussion.”

“In high school sports, concussions occur more often in competitive sports, with football accounting for more than 60%
of concussions. For males, the leading cause of high school sports concussion is football; for females the leading cause
of high school sports concussion is soccer.”

Analysis (How does this source support the Point to Prove?):

This website provides knowledge of effects and recovery times of a concussion. I found a lot of evidence
seeking that many of these specific types of sports most likely are the causes of concussion for high school, college,
and even younger age students. Also it shows percent rates of the known concussion, through out the United States.
The source I used was very useful it showed me all the different sports that concussions is mainly caused by
and mostly all include physical contact between one another and it can really change your life you accidently receive a
concussion.
The evidence this site has shown me tells me this will be a interesting topic of choice to pursue because I play
football and if I get a concussion I would like to know what I am up againist and how I can prevent any unnecessary
accidents to occur again.

Excerpts (These should provide insight into the designated Point to Prove):
“Concussion risk starts at the youth level, in football and ice hockey as well as baseball, soccer, boxing,
gymnastics, horseback riding, skiing and cycling”

“According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, U.S. emergency departments annually treat an
average of 173,285 sports- and recreation-related traumatic brain injuries among children and adolescents.”

“Football has the highest incidence of concussion, but girls have higher concussion rates than boys do in similar
sports.”

“Concussions account for nearly 15% of all sport-related injuries in high school athletes. The timing of return
to play after a sport-related concussion is similar regardless of whether the decision to return the athlete to play
is made by a physician or an AT.”

Analysis (How does this source support the Point to Prove?):

Professional sports that aren’t even designed to be that physical between other players can result in
concussions. Such as, in 2012 the finals for the National Basketball Association. Oklahoma city star James
Harden suffered one just before the beginning of the playoffs. One of the excerpts on the site went with my
points to prove that these sports are the leading reasons why youth, or even older players get concussions.\
Also this site showed me different information on how women or girls are more likely to get a concussion
than boys. The website concurred that one of the biggest reason why people get concussion fro football or ice
hockey is the lack of equipment or the player doesn't seem to realize how important the given equipment really
is for your safety. The evidence shown in my source is really useful to my research because they used surveys
and test over 5000 students and 500 professional athletes who previously had one to help gather information.

In this article, the information provided had valuable facts containing the traumatic problems a
concussion can do to the person who sustains one. It had facts such as CDC reports show that the amount of
reported concussions has doubled in the last 10 years. These concussions are a direct cause from mostly
physical contact that occurs when playing a vigorous sport that involves physical violence. Rates such as 1 in
5 high school athletes will sustain a sports concussion for almost any type of sport they play but also, the
researched showed that ill-equipped equipment is another big factor for people of all ages that can receive
concussions,
Players of any sport may receive a concussion but in these 5 different sports activities are the leading
cause of any one getting a concussion and this research that is getting studied can explain how it can be
reduced in numbers and what we the people can do, to help prevent them from happening to athletes of all
ages.

Point that this Source/Information Proves: # 2: The effects of a concussion are cumulative in athletes
who return to play prior to complete recovery.

Excerpts (These should provide insight into the designated Point to Prove):
“Some student athletes who suffered a head injury are at risk of return-ing to the field or rink before their
brain is fully healed, according to a new study on a concussion test used by more than 300 schools in
Massachusetts.”

“Young people usually want to get back on the field. The study, though, suggests much tighter rules might be
needed on when athletes can return to play after a head injury.”

“The study recommends that the students should not be -allowed to play again until they can get back to a
baseline score even after exercise.”

“The idea that it might be OK to return someone to play while they still have symptoms is “a really
dangerous opinion,” said Mark Lovell, founder of ImPACT Applications, as well as a coauthor on the
study.”
Analysis (How does this source support the Point to Prove?):
The study found that twenty-eight percent of the athletes who initially seemed to have regained their
cognitive abilities such as memory or reflexes saw an increase in dizziness after vigorous to moderate
exertions, they are also are more likely to get hurt themselves even more than they originally had been. This
clearly shows how, if one fails to completely take the time and effort into recovering from a traumatic brain
injury the athlete is more likely to get injured again or even a cause of death may occur. Baseline testing is a
good way to counter the act of a player going in while he or she still contains a concussion. Testing of the
reaction skill testing as well as the reflexes skill testing can show how the person is doing during the
concussion stages. It can show the truth if the player is lying that he feels one hundred percent up for the job.
A baseline test is performed preseason to any sport, so that it can be used for comparison after a player is
injured
Brookline Neuropsychologist who wrote this study, Brookline health offers and provides a cognitive
baseline testing across many different states. It is well used for athletes, especially young athletes, trying to
return to their sport. These brain test help protect the young athletes throughout the states and help keep them
safe from harm.

Excerpts (These should provide insight into the designated Point to Prove):

“A concussion is classified as a type of traumatic brain injury (TBI). With the disruption of the brain cells and
chemical signaling in the brain, it is extremely unsafe to return to play too soon after a concussion.”

“There is a slow progression of returning to play for athletes that takes place over six days, minimum. If concussion
symptoms do come back during a phase of the progression, the athlete will stop the activity, rest, and go back to the
previous day’s progression step”

“Managing concussions requires more than just monitoring symptoms because some athletes may underreport or not
report symptoms so that they can continue to play.”

“Gathering a complete history of the person allows for rapport building, identification of any symptoms and their
severity levels, and the documentation of the mechanism of injury.”

“If a subsequent concussion occurs during a time of recovery, the person risks a longer recovery period, potentially
more symptoms, increases in symptom severity, and possibly second-impact syndrome.”

Analysis (How does this source support the Point to Prove?):

This study shows the short and long-term effects, that occurs during your time of recovering from a
concussion. Post-concussion syndromes can also result from the prolonged first concussion that hasn’t fully
recover in health, this post-concussion symptoms can last for weeks, months, or in some case years. It has
been shown that athletes who have sustained a concussion are more likely to sustain another. That being said,
if a person happens to get a second concussion during the time a time of recovery, whether it be days or
months later. The player highly risks a longer recovery time that can potentially due more harm to the player
also a increase in the. Long lasting effects include depressive disorders, anxiety problems, and physical and
cognitive disturbances. The person who experienced the concussion also can experience different
psychological symptoms that can affect the person daily function in life. The time to recovery from a
concussion varies on how bad the concussion is. The risk of playing during the recovery process is
detrimental and the risks are greater than the reward.

“There is little science to guide the treatment of children with concussion. However, given that their brains
are still developing, it's prudent to be more conservative than with older adolescents or adults.”

Analysis (How does this source support the Point to Prove?):

This research discusses information on how a doctor or trainer can help fasten and reduce the time the
treatment of a sports concussion can take, as well as letting the player return safely to the sport he is playing.
for patients. Rules regulated by the trainers make it so any sports participation must be stalled as long as the
player shows signs of a head injury. The help of Focusing on the youth athlete’s protection and the
information related to concussion are highly needed for a player health. The use and necessity of a
professional trainer before the athlete returns needs to be evaluated. The brief ideas it also shows is educating
the coaches as well as the players in recognizing symptoms and signs of a concussion is highly discussed
throughout this article. The date of the injury and injury description in the patient pass history is a good way
to start the recovering process to help the athletes return to their sport of choice, knowing this information,
the trainers should be taken more seriously because they play a big role in players safety and protection from
injury.

Excerpts (These should provide insight into the designated Point to Prove):
“The first step in effective management of concussions is to increase the administration of ImPACT or
similar baseline tests in high schools and colleges throughout the country.”

“While the need for research to understand post-concussive effects continues, the largest obstacle facing

“the handbook goes on to conclude that “for any injury that involves significant symptoms, long duration of

Analysis (How does this source support the Point to Prove?):

The article shows a brief overview of concussion diagnosis. It defines a concussion as a pathophysiological
process that affects the brain which was caused by traumatic forces. It mentions that various professional and
even amateur sports programs are starting to develop actions to deal with the concussion problem going on in
sports. Also finding out different effective funding plans to deal with the concussion healing process for the
players. It describes managing this health concern, by gaining and understanding the knowledge of the issues
surrounding head injuries in sporting events. They discuss the increasing occurrence and dangers of
concussions in amateur and professional sports of any kind. The suggestion of all, schools, coaches, and
doctors (trainers) must become more diverse in the knowledge of the causes and the dangers of concussions,
in order to keep the players safe and ensure their safety

It also discusses the legal theories athletes and their families may pursue, as well as potential help the players
might utilize. Its topics describe what legislatures and amateur and professional sports organizations are
doing in an attempt to fight the problem of concussions. The information helps offer potential solutions for
reforming one’s brain memory. Mostly on along the lines of memory test and rest that allows the brain to
heal. these but this can only be done by increasing congressional funding to help sports organizations (mostly
high school sports) build effective concussion management to help and keep the players safe so they can start
playing as soon as possible when they are cleared and concussion free.

But the study shows that the cause of second impact syndrome is not always from the coach or trainer, but
from the player itself. as athletes, don't feel the need to self-report concussive symptoms. This can be
because the athlete is not always aware of the symptoms, or in some cases, they will want to continue
playing their sport because of the fact of saying I’m hurt is a sign of weakness and they think they would get
made fun of by their fellow players. This exact reason they say are from the coaches, trainers and parents,
and most of all the players naïve thinking toward concussions. They need to be aware of signs of any type of
injury to help aid athletes

Analysis (How does this source support the Point to Prove?):

In this Article, they research a concussion management recovery protocol to ensure that the player can
return to the sport as well as returning to academics fully healthy and not damaged by any symptoms. By
returning to play in sports, when not fully recovered. The athlete highly risk of causing himself or herself a
secondary impact head injury (Post-concussion) that can traumatically effect the brain and even at sometimes
cause death. Also in the process of a Secondary concussion the student is prolonging his recovery process to
far greater lengths. Symptoms of a secondary impact concussions can definitely effect the athlete’s social
relationship with others and his or her education. Victims of a post-concussion reflect a functional
disturbance within the brain and body rather than just a structural body injury.
Physical and cognitive rest is well needed to recover from a post-concussion. In regard to the recovery
time, players should listen to the time given by a professional medical caretaker and should sit out of any
type of vigorous activities that can cause a secondary concussion. Above all the educators should be more
informed and cautious on a concussion. It is the duty for coaches, players, family members, even teachers to
be well acquainted in this matter to help protect athletes of all ages to help them perform to the best of their
abilities to do great things in life. In the end, concussion management protocol can provide support for the
players future success as a student athlete.

“Public awareness of sport-related concussions is on the rise, largely due to high-profile injuries. Often
overlooked is the enormous potential children and adolescents have for sustaining a concussion.”

“There are four areas in which fitness professionals can contribute: education, evaluation, preparation and
rehabilitation.”

“Across the U.S. laws have been enacted addressing concussions. Most states require that before returning to

“Athletes can proceed to the next step as long as they continue to be without symptoms.”

Analysis (How does this source support the Point to Prove?):

The article explains the risk of adolescent’s athletes retaining a concussion from any kind of sports
activities, which harms the child’s brain function. Key notes that are to be read in this article emphasizes
how important roles that medical professionals and concussion testing systems come in to play, when a
fellow sports player sustain a sports-related concussion. Topics also include the education of concussion
knowledge is key and very helpful in reducing the risk of players getting hurt. Proper treatment of
concussions need to be taken seriously, otherwise the player is risking his or her safety. When a player
sustains a brain injury he or she may require specific accommodation’s that is in the best interest of the
player. For instance, academic leeway for the student, he or she may not need to participate in the learning
that is going on at the school.
Knowledge of concussions should be helpful for any signs or symptoms that a player is going
through. Other Main ideas is the evaluation process. More and more states have made it necessary for once a
person sustains a concussion before the player can return to play, he or she needs to pass a baseline testing to
compare the player’s pre-and post-concussion health. After this step to recovery is passed the player would
need a written-out clearance document signed by a medical professional of any kind allowing and the player
to return to the sport. Proper evaluation, education, rehabilitation is key for reducing a player chance of
hurting himself or herself even more.
