Overview of the lesson: Lesson started with the teacher reviewing previous concept which was
subtracting using three digits’ numbers. She followed by introducing four digits’ numbers and
later focused on regrouping. The lesson was well modeled using gradual release. After a few
examples of four digits’ subtraction was used on the board, students worked in group to solve
some problems. The classroom was very well managed with smooth transition from one activity
to the next. Routines have been established where the students understand the classroom’s
expectation during various phases. Students were rewarded and praised. The classroom was very
conducive to learning.
Khulood has a great command of classroom management strategies and the classroom overall.
All in all, it was a good lesson.
Areas for development: Provide students with activities which promote cooperation.
Today’s lesson may been have too teacher-centered. More than 30 minutes were spent on direct
instruction. Reduce direct instruction to no more than 20minutes.
Assessment for middle and lower ability students was not in complete alignment with the learning
outcome. They were to only subtract four digits’ numbers without regrouping.
Focus for next lesson:
Cooperative grouping activity
