other Board
1- Struggling with adding the numbers or find the sum of the equal addend.
Solutions:
1- The student teacher will remind the students about the doubles they already have learned.
Or let the students find the sum by adding the two numbers.
2- The teacher will remind the students that they have to share with their team or group.
3- The teacher will remind them about the classroom rules and she will do some strategies that they know it.
For example, ring the bill to get their attention immediately or remind them about the class dojo points.
Lesson Schedule
Targeted teacher language:
Sum, equal, addend, add
Student language:
Sum, equal, add
At the beginning of the lesson, the student teacher will say “Today we will find the sum of equal
addends"
she will introduce the keywords which are the sum, add, addition, equal.
The ST will review the doubles and explain some examples withdrawing some objectives to show two
equal groups\ addends. For example, she will write 6+6= 12 and draw 6 circles and circles to find the
sum with the students and to show them there are two equal addends\ groups.
The ST will review the doubles to make a connection between doubles and finding the sum of equal
addends’ concepts and to simplify it for students’ comprehension.
Core (introduce and practice new concepts & procedures): 35 minutes
The student teacher will explain the concept of finding the sum of equal addends using the student’s
math book. She will use the data show to present page 145.
On that page, she will use the cubes to show 3 +3 = 6 and draw the cubes in two empty squares. She
will explain that there are equal addends or equal groups or it’s a double.
The students will complete page 146 individually. While that the ST will observe them and give
feedback about their work. Also. She will have a checklist of students’ names to tick for their
understanding or misunderstanding.
When they finish with their textbooks, the ST will ask them to clean up and close their books.
Then she will provide some different activities which are depending on their levels.
- Students’ high level will create their own problems to find the sum of equal numbers using the
dish and small circles of colored papers. They will stick the circles in the dish which is already has a
line in the middle to put their two equal groups.
- Students’ middle level will use cubes to find the sum of different problems that have equal
addends. They will use the cubes to show how they find the sum of some problems such as 7+7=__.
They will write the sum in the worksheet they have.
- Students’ low level will use counters and small cans to find the sum of different problems that
have equal addends. Each of them will have two cans to put the same number of counters in each can
to ensure they have equal groups. They will write the sum in the worksheet they have.
While that the ST will go around and help the students if needed.
Close (wrap up, discussion, brief review activity or assessment): 5-6 minutes
The ST will review the lesson quickly and ask the students to hold the traffic light cards. The ST will
write some problems on the board and ask the students if it’s true or false. For example, she will write
4+4 = 9! They will use the cards to identify if the problem is true or false. The green card means true
and red card means false, the students will put the cards up and the ST will see who still don’t
understand the lesson or need more practice.
