PDP
Brief introduction to the PDP setting:
The school that I’m carrying out my professional development plan in Al Taqadom school. Its gender is girls school. This primary school cycle 1 and cycle 2
located in Al Shamkah city in Abu Dhabi. This school is old, it’s since 2006. It has about 817 students from grade 1 to 5. Also, there are 53 teachers and 30
staff such as administrative staff, mentor busses, and cleaners. I was placed in grade 2 and I taught math only adapting with MOE’s new teaching policies. I
had been teaching 4 classes at different levels and they’re about 94 students. Despite it is a big school, Al Taqadom school doesn’t have a playground.
However, it has a sports hall, library, and resources room in grade level.

To begin with, I will identify 3 significant competency areas for my professional development plan PDP which are based on my MST
and MST previous feedback in semester 6. My three competency areas are managing learning, planning for learning and monitoring
and assessment. I will justify my PD goals through table-specifying the focus that has the action points, time line and evidence for each
goal.

Justification of my PD goals for semester 7

I have chosen these PD goals because it is essential for me as a teacher to improve my teaching strategies in math and to create a fully
engaging classroom atmosphere.

The first goal focuses on managing the student’s behavior using effective strategies which is an important part of the students'
learning process. Indeed, before implementing any activity, the students should pay attention to the teacher instructions to follow as
well as follow the classroom rules. "How students behave in a classroom affects how much and how well they learn (Behavior in the
Classroom and Effects on Learning, 2017).

The second goal is motivating the students to learn math through creative activities depending on their levels. I have to know the
student’s levels in order to encourage them using appropriate activities. The students need to be engaged and motivated while
they’re learning new math concepts which will be through using creative math activities such as hands-on activities. In addition, the
most important thing when a teacher provides an activity to engage the students is to match it with their thinking “cognitive
engagement” (Nicolás Pino-James, 2015)

The third goal is basically related to my research topic and my competency area that I would develop. It’s assessing the students using
effective assessment strategies that monitor their achievements. I have chosen this goal because as a successful teacher it is crucial to
realize the students’ understanding and their growth performance.

Concise
Goal 1: Manage the students' behavior by learning the MSTs strategies within the first week and use them in each lesson.
Action points:  Use the rules that the students get used to it and remember them regularly.
 Check if the students remember the rules during the centers time.
 Check with my MST which students may need more management.
 Focus on the students who often misbehave and try to manage them during the day.
 Use my MST strategies during the activities to manage the student's behavior more while they are learning.

Desired time frame: 30\9 to 4\10 (first week)

Any support I will ask my MST to support me through advising me of how I can use her strategies effectively with students.

Reflections & actuality

During the first week, I observed my MST’s behavior management strategies and I noticed how efficient they are. For example, she
rang the bill to let the students freeze(stop) and pay attention to her instructions. She mainly used the class dojo website to reward
the students and reinforce them negatively by adding and removing points. In my lesson that I taught, I used these behavior
management strategies and they worked effectively. Because the students already know these strategies, I didn’t hesitate to use
them. I wrote some notes about the students who are often misbehaving, then in my lessons, I tried to focus on them to don’t disturb
their classmates while they’re working.

Goal 2: Motivate the students' learning using various activities depending on their level of learning.
Action points:  During the first week I will observe students to see what their levels are.
 Talk with my MST to find out her effective activities work well for each students’ levels (emerging, developing, high).
 Plan activities as per the student’s levels. I will identify these in my lesson plans as well.

Reflections & actuality

I believe that diverse math activities are a very significant thing in the math class. There is should be different and creative math
activities in order to motivate the students to love math and have fun while they’re learning. During my first week in Al Taqadom
school, I observed the students’ level in every 4 classes that I taught in grade 2. MOE has divided the students into their classes based
on their English diagnostic assessment. That's become obvious to me to provide suitable activities in class depending on their level.
However, I noticed that there are different levels in each class as well. I discussed with my MST and find it out that she has grouped
the students in their levels according to their performance in math class. I talked with my MST to find out what is her effective
activities that she used for each students’ level in order to know her activities and what will better in my lessons. I mentioned in my
lesson plans how I motivate the students using creative math activities depending on their levels.

Goal 3: Assess the students using effective assessment strategies to monitor their achievements.
Action points:  Use easy and quick assessment strategies at the end of each lesson I will teach.
 Observe and take notes about how the efficiency of using my assessment strategies through students’ results.
 Provide easy self-reflection to the students to reflect in how they find the assessment that I will do for them. For example, use
multiple answers.

Reflections & actuality

According to my various experiences of 7 previous teaching practice, I believe that assessment in math motivates the students to
practice what they have learned and encourages them to learn and explore math concepts. At the end of each lesson, I assessed the
students learning individually and as a whole class. I used effective assessment strategies such as tick outdoor strategy, pre-post test
to observe the student’s achievements. As a result of using different assessment strategies, I gathered information about the
student’s achievements. Furthermore, while assessing the students, I observed and took notes about how my assessment strategies

are effective. And then observe the students result of how they did it. Also, I tried to let the students evaluate my assessment using
their self-reflection.
