The wastewater from the PPGM factory is treated on site in an effluent treatment
plant utilising a chemical flocculation, anaerobic digestion and activated sludge process.
Hazardous chemical sludge containing zinc is produced. Legislation requires the company
to collect, transport, treat and finally dispose off the sludge to a central treatment facility.
The company is also required to treat its effluent to comply with the existing regulatory
standards. The effluent standards with which the company is expected to comply are that
the zinc concentration in the final discharge be less than 1 milligram per litre and Chemical
Oxygen Demand (COD) is to be less than 50 milligrams per litre.
